Summer Mission Trips- Great Success

Our young people were amazing these past two weeks as they served others in Jesus' name at "Just5Days", a mission trip for middle school students and “Young Neighbors in Action,” a mission trip for high school students.

On Just5Days, approximately one hundred middle school students and adults (seven OLOS students and four OLOS adults) representing numerous parishes from MA and NY reflected on what it means to be “Beatitude People” as they lived and volunteered in the community of Springfield, MA. We were divided into groups and the OLOS team served at two Head Start Programs for the week. It was an incredible experience to watch the young people grow during the week in love, empathy and compassion towards the toddlers and pre-school students with whom they worked.

On Young Neighbors in Action, approximately eighty high school students and adults (seven OLOS students and two OLOS adults) gathered for one week to serve at sites throughout Boston and to pray and reflect together on Catholic Social Teaching. Our OLOS team served at a B-SAFE Summer Program where we helped to provide a safe, fun and academically enriching environment for elementary and middle school students in Dorchester, MA. We led recreational activities, assisted with academic programming, and attended field trips with the kids.

A huge and hearty thank you to the adult participants on the Just5Days and YNIA trips (Kimberly Detrask, Jim Stessman, Kerry Payson and Sean O’Driscoll) and to all of the OLOS parishioners who made our trips possible through their prayers, support of our fundraisers, and other donations.

May our students’ love and compassion for others continue all the days of their life and may they continue to be role models and an inspiration for us all.

Becoming a Catholic (RCIA)

OLOS Staff Needed

As you may or not be aware, the OLOS staff is in need of three new members- Music Director, Director of Faith Formation, and Maintenance Coordinator. We are working on posting these positions and hopefully filling them as soon as possible. If you know of anyone who may be interested in these positions, please ask them to go to the OLOS website for full job description. Pray for the hiring committees and staff as we work through interviewing and hiring new members.

ECO-TIP OF THE WEEK: Waste not want not!

Do you waste food? In the USA, organic waste is the second highest component of landfills, which are the largest source of methane emissions . Additionally, 30-40% of the food supply is wasted, equaling more than 20 pounds of food per person per month that is wasted. Make sure to save leftover food from your meals this week and eat it later on. You can also try to give leftovers to friends and family if you know you will not eat them.

What’s Happening at OLOS

A note from Kathleen Crawford about the Catholic Relief

Services trip to Kenya A few weeks ago, I was selected to be part of a short-term mission trip to Kenya. That trip is coming up fast! It will happen right after Labor Day and I will be back in time for the Mass at the Lake. To my knowledge, this will be the first time Catholic Relief Services (CRS) is sending ordinary parishioners on this kind of trip. We are reading and having conference calls to prepare ourselves. Below is an excerpt from the CRS Resource for Short-term Inter-national Mission and Immersion Trips. “Each year, more than 1.6 million Christians in the United States pack up their passports and bug spray, and board planes to go on short-term service trips overseas…Mission trips frequently engage participants in construction and other types of service projects. After they return home, many participants would like to make a meaningful difference beyond their experience, yet are not sure how to do it.

We leave the United States to serve the poor overseas, but after a week or so we come home and resume our lives. The poor remain poor, and we remain divided.

…Each of us—rich and poor—is created in God’s image to love and serve one another as one Body of Christ…The Christian sojourner…seeks to heal the divisions that distort the oneness of the Body of Christ…Rather than focusing on what participants can give (service, action, time, donations), we reflect upon the giftedness of host communities and the neediness of participants—and ask how we can overcome divisions between the two. This requires a relationship-based approach that forges bonds between sending and receiving communities and leads participants to address the disease of poverty when they return home. The experience then becomes more than a short trip overseas. It is a first step in the larger Christian mission to heal divisions.”

I am very excited to be able to do this, even with all the unknowns. In the next few weeks I will share more information about our plans and hopes. Please keep us in your prayers!

From Senior Deacon Mike:

The gospel narrative for the 19th Sunday in ordinary time (Cycle ‘C’) elaborates on a theme from last week’s parable.

Recall the parable of the man who tore down his barns and built larger ones to store his harvest. The man exulted in his good fortune expecting to live in luxury. Alas! God told him his life would end that night.

The message this Sunday is encapsulated as… “You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.”

2nd Collection– August 6th and 7th Xaverian Missionaries

Archbishop Guida Maria Conforti, a Bishop whose heart embraced the World, fulfilled his life-long dream to serve the mission of the Church by founding the Xaverian Missionaries in 1895. On World Mission Sunday-October 23rd, 2011 , Pope Benedict XVI at St Peter’s Basilica in Rome proclaimed him a Saint.

Today, over 900 Xaverian priests, brothers and sisters bring God’s love to people on every continent: Bangladesh, Japan, Indonesia, China/Taiwan, the Philippines, Thailand in Asia; Burundi, D.R. Congo, Cam-eroon, Chad, Mozambique, and Sierra Leone in Africa; Brazil, Colombia and Mexico in Latin America; USA, Spain, UK and Italy. From the very beginning of our history, we have enjoyed the collaboration and cooperation of many friends and benefactors through the world. It is, however, the loyal support of generous friends in United States, which enables us to increase and multiply our works of mercy.

Whenever we have been able to build a church or a seminary, a school or a hospital, a youth center or a farming project this has been made possible through the generous contributions of our friends and benefactors here in the States. These partners in mission are truly the ones who make possible the training of future local priests, brothers and sisters, who provide much needed medicines and facilitate the development of all the skills needed for missionary work. These friends and benefactors have con-sciously chosen to be with us as together we make the love of Jesus visible in every corner of the world. Ultimately, in all we do, our purpose is to facilitate the formation of “one human family: by enabling people to become agents of both their spiritual and material destinies through a personal commitment to Jesus’ commandment of love.

You, too, can SHARE in these mission efforts through your prayers, through your financial aid and through encouraging the youth in your parish to answer their call to be missionaries.

Thank you for supporting,. Through our missionary activities, the MISSION OF THE CHURCH. Through your support you form, together with us, THE XAVERIAN FAMILY.
