Pastor’s Corner
Me and my household…We will serve the Lord; We will serve the Lord…Me and my household!
Although my new assignment begins this weekend, and Fr. Tom Barcellona should be writing this column as your new pastor, I asked for the chance to offer some closing remarks.
Reflecting on the past 6 years, I can honestly say that we accomplished some significant progress as a parish. With the help of the Holy Spirit, and our openness to His promptings – assisted by Mary’s powerful intercession – Our Lady of Perpetual Help emerged as a renewed parish of disciples and Assumption Regional Catholic School developed even stronger bonds as a community that truly nurtures all members academically and in the values of the Gospel.
These were not accomplished by any one person, but only through the efforts of our entire parish & school family. As pastor, I was blessed with the responsibility to lead you along the way, however, so many of you assisted me in a collaborative spirit. With our associate priests, our deacons, parish staff, Pastoral & Finance Council, Trustees, leaders and members of all the parish ministries, the principal, vice-principal and school faculty, staff and volunteers, and of course with your generosity – financially and most of all spiritually (through your prayers) – we did bear much fruit! AND YOU MUST CONTINUE THE GOOD WORK.
In the Gospel this Sunday Jesus says that if Love (God first, then others), Serve (taking up our cross and care for others) and be Welcoming (receive the Lord and all people) we will be rewarded. Not in wealth or power or health, but with peace and joy; two things that all people crave and no one can purchase.
Six years ago, you welcomed me and over time you have shown me Christian love and have offered yourself in service. I thank you for all that you have done for me and our parish.
Likewise, I have tried my best to listen to you and to love and serve you as Christ calls me to. Today, though the transition is difficult, I am at peace with much joy; and I hope you can say the same.
Therefore, the lesson that Jesus Christ teaches us in the Gospel is that happiness does not depend solely on those around us – even those in leadership roles – but on whether we imitate His self-giving love, service and hospitality: whether we are His disciple!
Peace, Fr. Nick
