PASTOR’S COLUMN

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

“I will take a tender shoot and plant it on a high and lofty mountain … it shall put forth branches and bear fruit and become a majestic cedar …” Ezekiel

God calls all of us to holiness. All of us have the potential to become persons that do good for others. The Holy Spirit inspires us to pray, to follow Jesus and all His teachings. If we are impressed by the Saints, it is because God wants us to be like them. Let us thank God for calling us.

“Lord, it is good to give thanks to you …” Psalm 92

Let us always remember that at the end of our life, God will be asking us if we brought others to Him by our example.

“You must all appear before Christ … that each may receive recompense, according to what he/she did … whether good or evil …” 2 Corinthians

Monsignor Lorenzo

Talk to your teens about handling workplace violence

Many teens will get their first job while s ll in high school. Building a work ethic is a great and necessary skill, but teens need to be informed to about how best to handle possible workplace violence. Coworkers are not always thoroughly screened, and your teen could face another employee’s rage or anger that could pos-sible put them in danger. Talk to your teens about warning signs—short tempers, in mida on, drug use—and about how to remove themselves when they feel unsafe in a situa on, and how to report any con-cerns they have, to a safe adult. OUR LADY SCHOOL NEWS My brothers and sisters,

We all agree on what it feels to be banished. Some literally, remembering the land in which they were born and grew up, remember perhaps the distant family left behind and the cus-toms of their land. Or at least, knowing well that the pain that accompanies the Exiles also accompanies us. And so we sigh so many times for a better life, for a situation of more serenity and happiness. We would like to change, to capable of another life. But we find it impossible: always the same. Desiring to change, but remaining in the bad. Every Sunday, on the way out of the mass, we should feel stronger than when we walked in. More confident. With more encouragement for the week we are to begin. I hope the Lord will grant it to all of us today. Courage brothers, Christ loves us, He saves us. Why are we afraid and suspicious? Blessings, Deacon Carlos

ONCE UPON A TIME  Let me tell you a story. . . . That sentence enchants us. We feel our bodies relax and our an cipa on grow. Let me tell you a story, Jesus seems to say, as he searches for vivid images that will help us love the mysterious re-ality of God’s kingdom. The kingdom of God, Jesus ex-plains, is like a seed growing. The person who planted the seed doesn’t have a clue how it achieves its fullness. Modern me-lapse photography can record the second-by-second development of a seed into a plant, but Jesus’ contemporary audience had never seen such pictures. To Jesus’ listeners, a seed’s growth—impercep ble yet un-mistakable—seemed miraculous. Jesus taps into the knowledge and wonder of his audience to help them have an experience of what he wants to convey: alt-hough we cannot always see or prove it, God works for us in all mes and places. God’s kingdom is everywhere, and there is nowhere that God does not guide our growth. GROWTH POTENTIAL  Throughout the Gospels, Jesus tells many parables to help explain the kingdom of God. Both of today’s para-bles from Mark’s Gospel involve seeds, strangely enough. Seeds really are a bizarre emblem for a king-dom. Can you imagine a mighty kingdom whose royal banners boast a picture of a ny seed? Jesus doubles down on the image, however, invi ng us to picture first a seed of grain, and then a mustard seed. Jesus longs for us to understand that God’s kingdom is full of unex-pected strength. A withered tree blooms, a virgin bears a son, a dead man bursts out of his tomb. Our scriptures are a long catalog of unlikely victories. We walk by faith, as Saint Paul says, and not by sight—we must believe that God transforms all weakness into strength, all death into life. We may prefer swi , demon-strable victories in our lives, but God’s style o en resembles the gentle way of seeds. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc

HABÍA UNA VEZ  Déjame contarte un cuento. . . .
