REMINDER REGARDING
THE COMMUNION FAST Please remember that we are supposed to observe a Communion Fast before receiving Holy Communion. This means we do not eat
any foods or drink any liquids for one hour before receiving Holy Communion, the only
exception being water or medicine. This also means that we are not to chew gum during
Mass, and certainly not while we are coming forward to receive Holy Communion. Let’s be sure we are appropriately prepared to receive
Holy Communion by observing this important rule of the Church.
Evening
Prayer All are invited to pray Evening Prayer on Saturdays and
Sundays after the 5:00 p.m. Mass.
Here we pray the psalms, listen to the
Word of God and give thanks to God for the blessings of the day. Evening Prayer is usually about ten to fifteen minutes in length.
So come and pray…
Saturdays and Sundays
After the 5:00 p.m. Mass
“The Liturgy of the Hours is intended to become the prayer of the whole People of God. In it Christ himself ‘continues his priestly work through his Church….Pastors of souls should see to it that the principal hours, especially Vespers (Evening Prayer) are celebrated in common in church on Sundays and on the more solemn feasts.’”
-Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1175
Prayer for Peace
Please join us for a special Holy Hour devoted
to praying for world peace within our own
country and throughout the world. This Holy
Hour for Peace, with prayers focusing on the
intention of peace, will be held on the second,
third and fourth Sunday evenings of the month
from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Holy Hour of
Reparation which has been held on the first
Sunday of the month will continue every first Sunday evening as usual, with the prayers that
are usually said for that first Sunday Holy Hour. Lord Jesus Christ,
who are called the Prince of Peace,
Who are yourself our peace
and our reconciliation,
Who so often said ‘Peace to you’,
Grant us peace!
Make all men and women witnesses
of truth, justice and brotherly love.
Banish from their hearts
whatever might endanger peace.
Enlighten our rulers
that they may guarantee
and defend the great gift of peace.
May all peoples of the earth
become as brothers and sisters.
May longed-for peace blossom forth
and reign always over us all.
AMEN
Mary, Queen of Peace, Pray for us!
(Pope Saint John XXIII)

Gospel Reflection Questions…. After reading next Sunday’s Gospel take
some time to pray on it before you come
to Mass. Use the questions below to aid
your reflection.
1. Did the pearl finder and the merchant have to be shrewd about obtaining their treasures? What about you? Are you shrewd about recognizing the “treasure” or the
Kingdom of God in your life? Do you find God, or at least look for God, in all things in your life? Do you notice when God is “whispering,” or just when God is “shouting” in your life?
2. What does Pope Francis say is the “Pearl of great price? How would you rank as treasures the graces that come from this “pearl:” truth, mercy and joy?
The good news is the precious pearl of which we read in the gospel. It is not a thing but a
mission. This is evident to anyone who has experienced the “delightful and comforting joy of evangelizing” (Evangelii Gaudium, 10). …
Good news. A single word—gospel—that, even as it is spoken, becomes truth, brimming with joy and mercy. We should never attempt to separate these three graces of the gospel: its truth, which is non-negotiable; its mercy, which is unconditional and offered to all sinners; and its joy, which is personal and open to everyone. Truth, mercy and joy: these three go together.
“The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus” (ibid., 1)

PREPARING FOR Sunday, July 30, 2017—
THE SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
We know that all things work for good for those who love God,
who are called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28
Readings for the Week
1 Kings 3:5, 7-12
When King Solomon asked the Lord for the gifts of wisdom and
understanding, rather than for greater riches and power, the Lord was pleased and granted his request. Ironically, it was through exercising this gift as king that Solomon gained great renown, and
subsequently acquired the great riches and power he did not ask for. While it was through this prosperity that Solomon was able to
build the Temple, the promised house for the Lord, the temple the Lord really wanted to dwell in was Solomon’s heart. When
Solomon lost his delight in the Lord, he would be on his way to losing everything.
Romans 8:28-30
Because of Christ, all of God’s promises are sure to be fulfilled for all who love Him. All who love God will be empowered to become
like Christ in all ways, no longer falling short of the glory of God, but following Him in life and death. Then one day we will share in
His very glory with Him.
Matthew 13:44-52
The first two parables in this reading both have the same point. The person who finds a buried treasure and the merchant who
finds a pearl of great price sell all that they have to acquire these finds. The third parable of the net cast into the sea which pulls up both good and bad fish reminds us that this life is full of both
righteous and wicked people who will be judged at the end times (and not by us). The implicit meaning of all three parables is the
same: one must value the Kingdom of God above all else in order to possess it, in this life and in the next.
