Howdy,
As most of our country prepares to celebrate
the feast of Thanksgiving, my prayer is that
they remember that thanksgiving is more
than food and football. In fact, for us
Catholics, every Sunday...every day is a
thanksgiving day because the work Eucha-
rist means “thanksgiving”. Yes, we give
“thanks” to our God every day for the many
blessings we receive.
I recently preached at a daily mass remind-
ing the people that in our consumeristic
society, we tend to be more focused on what
we want than on thanksgiving for what we
have. Of course, that leaves God out of the
picture. I said that when we always think of
“wants” then we are never satisfied, there is
always more that we want.
The founders of our country were thankful
for the freedom to worship as they felt
called. They were thankful for the freedom
to make choices. They were thankful to
God for leading them to this wonderful
country. As we still thankful? Or, are we
always wanting more...more freedom, more
for me?
I pray that we all spend each day as a
Thanksgiving Day to our God for the many
blessings he has bestowed on us.
Pax,
Father Mike
deseamos”, entonces nunca estamos satisfechos,
siempre queremos algo mas.
Los fundadores de nuestro país agradecieron la
libertad de culto cuando se sintieron llamados.
Estaban agradecidos por la libertad para tomar
decisiones. Estaban agradecidos a Dios por
guiarlos a este maravilloso país. Seguimos sien-
do agradecidos?
Paz,
Padre Mike

For those of you who receive the Glendale Star
newspaper there is a good article on a new ministry
coming to Glendale called Family Promise. This is
to help families who find themselves homeless for
the first time. They connect with various congrega-
tions in the area to help them. After talking with our
Parish Council and our staff we have told them we
are interested in helping. Watch for an up-coming
meeting where they will come and explain their
ministry and how we can participate.

Auxiliary Bishop of Phoenix. This Mass of

those who sacrificed their lives this past year will be

All are welcome.
El punto de la enseñanza de
hoy es muy adecuado para la
sociedad moderna. En los
tiempos antiguos, como ahora,
la lucha de muchas personas
estribaba en cómo prescindir
del materialismo, de lo super-
fluo.

In 1 Samuel, God advises the prophet
Samuel not to observe as men see but as
God sees. He tells him to "look to the
heart." This is the movement of this Sun-
day's Gospel reading. "Beware the
scribes," Jesus advises. He points out their
public greetings and "seats of honor," which stands in sharp con-
trast to their private greed. For the Jewish people of Jesus' day,
honor resides at the top. Power and prestige created a high pro-
file back then as it still does today. After his warning, Jesus turns
his disciples' attention elsewhere: a poor widow. "She, from her
poverty, has contributed all she had." While the scribes donated
large sums to the temple, they did so "from their surplus wealth."
This woman -- in her faith and devotion -- offers "her whole
livelihood."
Jesus invited his disciples to see with God's eyes, to recognize a
holy life in people the world overlooks. Here -- in the poor, the
vulnerable, the marginalized -- God waits hidden.
Today's Gospel begs a few questions. What do we see? Whom
do we value? Are we impressed by the pomp and circumstance
of modern day Pharisees? Do we ignore their self-righteousness
because it looks impressive, even seems somewhat helpful? The
point isn't to judge the scribes, of course. God can see their
hearts as well, and those assessments are firmly his responsibil-
ity. The point is to turn our eyes from the typically honored to
the rarely respected. Are we disinterested in the poverty of the
modern day widows? Do we ignore their faith because we forget
to look for it? This Sunday, consider the widows in your own
life. Who can you see with God's eyes?
Next week, our second collection will be for the

Dios. Él siempre nos proveerá cuando pongamos nuestra
esperanza en él.

It has been my experience that God takes delight in
replenishing goods that are running out, especially
for when we put our trust in him.
The widow trusted Elijah as a “man of God.” She
put her faith into action by sharing what little she
had with the prophet and God blessed her faith by
providing oil and meal for her and her son. The key
seems to be complete confidence; a willingness to
give everything and trust God with the results.
But sometimes God’s generosity surprises us. The
wine Jesus provided at the wedding at Cana was
not a matter of life or death. It wasn’t necessary for
the survival of the newlyweds. Yet, he provided in
great abundance for them.
When have you been surprised at God’s generous
provision? Once, he refilled a propane tank in the
winter for my husband and me when we had no
money to pay for the refill. We took the tank to be
filled, planning to pick it up and pay for the gas
later, when we had earned the money to pay for it.
But the gas man called us back to say that the tank
was already full. He could neither add propane to
the tank nor charge us for it.
Tell the stories of God’s provision in your family
to your children. It is impossible to have too much
confidence in God. He will always provide for us
when we put our hope in him.
