FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT NOVEMBER 27, 2016

OLP will be hosting a Giving Tree for the St. Francis Outreach Center in McArthur Ohio between the week of November 26 and December 11. This gift drive supports St.Francis with their mission in the community which serves Vinton County andsurrounding communities. In 2015 our efforts helped to support their campaign

which provided gifts to more than 600 childrenand young adults. As a community we are blessed tohavesuchcaringparishionerswhohavemadethis an annual part of OLP tradition. Please select an ornament from the trees in the gathering space, whichprovide“suggested”giftideasforaparticularagegroup.Duringmy interviewwithSt.Francis,theyidentifiedaparticularneedinfulfillinggiftsfortheyoungadultagegroup14-18,sothisyearwewillhavemoreornaments for thatgroup. Please bring your new and unwrapped present to the givingtreesby11:00a.m.onSunday,December11th. Santa’s sleigh will be leavingOur Lady ofPeace by the start of the 11:30 a.m. Mass, so it isimperativethatallpresentsbeattheparishnolater than 11:00 a.m. on that Sunday. If you have any questions, please contact Tom Gulla at 614-582-7468.

ALPHA is coming!

Because of the success here at OLP, our parish again will be offering Alpha this Spring. This time we will have it on Sunday afternoons after the 11:30 a.m. Mass. Alpha is a series of sessions exploring the basics of the Christian faith. Typically run over eleven weeks, each sessionlooks at a different question that people can have about faith and is designed to createconversation. It’sjustanopen, informalandhonestspace toexploreanddiscuss life’sbigquestionstogether.

RCIAWhy are the RCIA participants dismissed in the middle of the Mass? OnSundaysbeginning inAdvent, ouradultRCIAcandidates – those who have already beenBaptized as a Christian in another denomination – are dismissed at the end of the Liturgy of the Word. This will continue each Sunday until Easter when, attheEasterVigil, theywilljoinusattheTableoftheEucharist for the first time. The parish is notsending them out because they are somehow “unworthy” to stay for the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Though they cannot yet come to the table of the Eucharist, Mother Church still has an obligation to feedthosewhohaveenteredintoarelationshipwithher through the Rites of Acceptance and Welcome, whichhappenonthefirstSundayofAdvent.

God’s Word is their primary food during thisperiod. Instead of remaining for the Liturgy of the Eucharist, the participants depart from the Mass with one or more RCIA team members to discuss the Mass readings for that Sunday and to experience more fully the impact of the Scriptures intheirlives.Thistimeisknownas“BreakingOpenthe Word.” Through the dismissal to Break Open theWord, theparishcommunityisinvitedtoprayfor our candidates, and in return the candidates experience a sense of belonging to a community that cares for them. Please feel free to introduce yourself to our candidates and offer your assistance intheirfaithjourney.

What is the Rite of Welcoming?Whena person interested in joining theCatholicChurch and theChurch community believes thatthe person is starting to show some signs of a Christian faith and is ready to commit to becoming Catholic, the person is invited to celebrate aritual called a “Rite of Welcome.” This Rite will be celebrated at Our Lady of Peace on Sunday, November27–theFirstSundayofAdvent–duringthe 10:00 a.m. Mass.

Bycelebratingthisrite, thepersonisofficiallyandpublicly declaring his or her intention to enter into a formal relationship with the Church, learning its ways and participating in its lifestyle. The Church, in turn, accepts their commitment and pledges its support throughout the person’s journey of faith.Pleasewelcometheseindividualsandkeeptheminyourprayersastheycontinuetheirfaithjourneytowards full initiation in the Church.
