“My child, remember that you received what was good during your lifetime while Lazarus likewise received what was bad; but now he is comforted here, whereas you are

tormented. Moreover, between us and you a great chasm is established…” (Luke 16:25-26)

When God created the world He declared that it was good and He gave it to all mankind for us to enjoy. However,

over the years we have created a chasm between those who have great gifts and those who do not. In today’s Gospel we see that with our own generosity we must bridge that gap between those who have much and those who have little or we may find ourselves on the wrong side of the

chasm in the next life.

From the Desk of Father David It was with great sadness that we bade our final farewells this week to our beloved former pastor, Monsignor William J. Haughney. At the time of his death on September 21, Monsignor was 98 years old. He was the oldest priest in the Diocese of Metuchen. A priest for over 72 years, Monsignor was pastor here at Our Lady of Mount Virgin from 1983 to 1996. In Monsignor’s memory I would like to share some ex-cerpts from The Wit, Wisdom and Teaching of Monsignor William J. Haughney, a compilation that was prepared by The Historical Guild of OLMV back in 2003.

* * * A man once walked from coast to coast. Upon his arrival, newsmen asked what the hardest parts of his trip were . . . Climbing the mountains? Trudging through desert? Avoiding traffic and ugly dogs? To their sur-prise, he quickly responded: “It was the sand in my shoes.” Tiny grains of sand were his biggest problem on the 3,000 mile trek. Reflecting on little things, we find they form a lesson for life. A tiny needle in the compass is a little thing, but it serves to guide men through skies and over unmarked oceans. A comma in the wrong place, in a deed, once lost the owner of an estate a large sum of money. Little things are as necessary in their place in the moral realm as in the physical world. They form the cement, which binds society together and makes it strong. Disregard for them tends to break down morality and leads to a lack of refinement, essential to the growth of a culture. One’s conduct in little things is a truer test of character than the occasional extraordinary or public act could ever be. Fidelity and integrity, as elements of conscience and character, must be thorough and absolute, never optional. The habit of violating conscience in little things produces an awful mischief. It follows that he who would take advantage of another in little things, would do the same in matters of great consequence if he thought he could escape detection or censure. Dishonesty in little things indicates a loss of moral sense. It throws down the fence to let a whole herd of dishonest actions drive through.

* * * “Concern for others” is simply another definition of love. It acknowledges by action and fair treatment that fellow Christians are brothers and sisters of a common Father. . . . Self, when left alone, will try to domi-nate. When subjected to Christ that same self will rise above short-sighted selfishness and see the image of God in every man or woman. This is the motivation of all missionaries from the time of Christ to this very day. More importantly for us, it is the very living of the “Good News” reduced from words in a book to action on the home front.

* * * To truly love others you must know yourself. Jesus asked us to love our neighbor as ourselves. He implied that we can’t love another unless we love ourselves first. In fact, we can’t really get to know another person unless we come to know ourselves first. We can’t have a good relationship unless we recognize our hang-ups, our weaknesses, and our strong points. Relationships do not start with other people. They start with us. When we are alone and have nothing to think about but ourselves, that is the beginning of relationship. When we are trying to figure ourselves out, we are preparing for relationships. Failing to recognize our own weaknesses only leads us to blame others for the problems in a relationship. Once the red flag of blaming shows itself, we usually have evidence of imma-turity. People who know themselves are not upset when they find they cannot get along with certain people. They do their best to relate to everyone, but they don’t resort to blaming others when relationships hit a snag. . . . People who do not appreciate all there is to learn about themselves waste a frightful amount of time complaining about others.

In Loving Memory of Rev. Msgr. William

J. Haughney Please remember in your prayers the re-pose of the soul of the Reverend Monsignor William Haughney. Father Haughney was

ordained to the priesthood May 31, 1947. His first assignment in the Diocese of Metuchen was as a Parochial Vicar at the Ca-thedral of St. Francis. He served as Pastor at St. Joseph Church, North Plainfield from 1975-1983 and then as Pastor of Our Lady of Mt. Virgin, Middlesex from 1983-1996. He retired in 1996 but served as Administrator at Nativity of Our Lord Church in Monroe until 2002.

May he rest in peace.
