Our community has been blessed with the presence and commitment of Eustacchio and Merle Guadagnini

for many, many years. Both of their sons were enrolled and graduated from our parish school. Eustacchio serves at

daily Mass two to three times a week and both he and Merle are Eucharistic Ministers. Merle also arranges lowers for the altar. They are both faithful Catholics and dedicated parents, who cared for their son, Christopher, who sadly

passed away in May 2017. Congratulations to Eustacchio and Merle for exemplifying

their commitment to what we are asked to do in our daily lives – to give to God and to give back and share our gifts.

SAFEGUARD OUR CHILDREN

Cell Phone Snapshots may not be so Innocent Nearly everyone has a cell phone and that may be

great for communication and connection, but it also gives rise to concerns about who may be tak-ing photos of you or your children without your

knowledge. You can’t police the behaviors of oth-ers around you, but you can avoid taking pictures of your own children in public, and posting photos online that give away the locations of your favor-

ite parks and hangouts. If your children have phones, monitor the photos they are taking and sharing, too. For a copy of the complete VIR-

TUS® article “Camera Phones: Unseen Dangers” visit http://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/

STILL ENROLLING Our Lady of Mount Carmel School is a Catholic

Catholic Education Association as well as the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

We offer Pre-K to 8th grade. If you are interested in hearing more about our school or know a

family who would be interested in OLMCS, have them contact us at [email protected].

T T The American Revolution cleared the way for

freedom of religion in the former colonies, since the colonies had always been a more religiously

tolerant place than the old country. Even so, colonial laws restricted the practice of the

Catholic faith, and just as in England, Americans who desired to be priests or nuns had to go to the Netherlands or France. As political storm clouds gathered in France, an American woman, Mother

Bernardina Matthews, the prioress of the Hoogstraeten Carmel in Holland, made a brave

move. With two other American nuns, her nieces, and a Dutch sister, she came to Port Tobacco, Maryland, in 1790. Within twenty years the

community had grown to twenty, although by 1823 their farm failed and they had to move to

Baltimore and open a school. The Carmelite order requires contemplation and cloister, so in time

the school was closed. The Port Tobacco land had long since been sold, but in 1976 a community of nuns was able to return thanks to loyal neighbors who had worked for forty years for their restora-tion. Today, our original American convent is fully alive in prayer, hard work, and strong community. —Rev.JamesField,Copyright©J.S.PaluchCo.

Whole Community Faith Sharing Gospel Mark 6:30-34

Reflection: How many times have we been so excit-ed to share a tale with those we love only to have them be too distracted to listen for some reason? It is frustrating to both the sharer and the "sharee", but there is always a reason. In this gospel, the apostles are filled with enthusiasm and joy, so eager to tell Jesus about their experiences. Jesus tries to move them away from the crowds so that he can listen and rest, but the multi-tudes manage to find them anyway. Jesus must pri-oritize with his time and ends up teaching the hun-gry masses (for that is his ultimate mission) leaving the apostles tales for another time.

Question: What have I learned from the example of Jesus in this gospel story? Will this lead to an examination of my priorities?

Faith Response: Rest is important. I will take sure to take time to rest and pray this week.
