He has faith in You. He believes You will change. He believes You will make yourfamily, your home, your neighborhood, your state and nation abetter people, a better place, because God’s Son believes inYou. The question for you in this Lenten season is: Do youbelieve in Him strongly enough to change, to grow in His love? We have a world that needs us. • Dear friends,

Last Saturday evening we had the visit of our Bishop and it was a joyful night. I would like to thank everyone for your supportand prayers. People looked very happy at Mass; we had 2 deacons, 2 seminarians and 7 altar servers with us. The Knightsof Columbus Color Guard came to escort the Bishop. Our choir did a wonderful job as always, and our lectors and otherministers did as well. The Bishop was very happy with the good turnout we had and I think he experienced how warm andloving we are here at OLM. Let us continue to make our parish family a dwelling place of love and joy.

Our 12:05 Mass during Lent started already last Thursday after Ash Wednesday and it will continue Monday –Friday untilWednesday Mar 28th of Holy Week. The attendance is very light so far but we hope it increases with time. This is another opportunity to have the privilege to be at Mass during Lent.

Last Wednesday we celebrated Ash Wednesday and we had a great turnout. The imposition of the Ashes is very popularhere in America, however, we good Catholics know well that receiving ashes is only a symbol of penance, conversion andhumility before God. Ashes represent the ephemeral dimension of this material world in which we live and remind us that weare called to something greater and everlasting. The entire Lenten Season is meant to help us to realize our need to grow infaith and get closer to our Lord. In this way, we prepare ourselves for the greatest celebration of our faith, the Resurrectionof the Lord.

Last Tuesday as I was doing my rounds through our Religious Formation Program, I entered a classroom and one of ourteachers was explaining the meaning of the Season of Lent. Sometimes, visiting our children in their classrooms becomes alearning experience for me also. That’s exactly what happened to me on Tuesday. Traditionally we think about giving upsomething during Lent. That’s the way we grew up and that’s what automatically comes to my mind. Even at the Seminarythey teach the future priests in those terms. Our children and their teacher were talking about Lent in a different perspective. They said that it would be much better to focus in a positive way and not only on “giving up”. I immediately, totally agreed. There are many positive things that we can do to get closer to the Lord and to prepare ourselves to celebrate Easter withhearts pure and pleasing to God. Our teenagers from the Confirmation Program and our Religious Formation Program fromK-8th are good examples of how many positive things we can do during the Season of Lent.

Our Confirmation Program: They have a wonderful service project. They assisted with our Family Lenten Program helpingour catechists take care of the lower grades and playing games with them at the Parish Center. They also assisted with theEcumenical Scout’s Faith Project. On Ash Wednesday I went down to greet the people at the Soup Kitchen and there theywere along with the Knights of Columbus serving the community and having a great time. I was so happy to see them doingthis with an unbelievable joy. They will do the same on Good Friday. Our teens also will guide the Stations of the Cross onFriday, March 23rd at the Chapel. How inspiring for all of us it is seeing our teenagers doing things such as these.

Our Religious Formation Program K-8th: They have a central theme for the Season, “What Would Jesus Do – WWJD”. At our Lenten Evening each child/teen did a “Lenten Pledge” by tracing their foot on a paper that said- “My Lenten pledge isto…” in their footprint they put what they will do. K-2nd were given little booklets about Lent for them to color. 3-8th were givensheets of paper and asked to write “Lenten Letters to God” including good deeds they can do during Lent that will help themto develop a closer relationship with God. Each child was also given a Rice Bowl so they can put some money from theirallowance into it. They also have a cross, which can be marked each time they pray. Families were given a LentenCalendar that they can follow each day, which is similar to an Advent Calendar. They were also given a Lenten Prayer thatcan be used for grace or any time the families are together to pray. At our parent meeting they were encouraged to bringtheir children to Stations of the Cross on Fridays and to our celebrations during Holy Week, especially Holy Thursday andGood Friday.

I really believe that children have a lot to teach us. Let us support them during this privileged time of holiness which is Lentso that their faith may grow always stronger. Let us also renew our faith and try to wake up the desire to experience thepresence of God in our lives. May the Lenten Season be for all of us an opportunity to do so.

    God bless you all,

    Fr. Roberto
