Page 2 From the Pastor’s Desk… Better Known As Heidi Howls! Fr. Don asked me to write for Heidi Howls this week as this Sunday marks my one year anniversary as a priest. The seminary, I believe, prepared me well, or at least, as much as the seminary is able. It has become apparent to me during my first year as a Priest that there are things that the seminary just can’t prepare one for—one of those things, of course, is the semi-nary failing to teach me how to live with a dog that sheds more than a....well, anything I have ever seen. There is no way the seminary can prepare a man for

everything he is going to experience in his first year as a priest. Ministering in tragic situations; burying children; ministering to countless heartaches....no shot. But that’s okay. It doesn’t need to. It doesn’t need to because of what happened one year ago this weekend. After Bishop Conlon laid his hand on my head, he said the words of priestly consecration. He called forth the Holy Spirit and I was changed. I was now tapped into a new power that would always be present when I called upon it. The seminary can’t “teach” this: “With the sacramental outpour-ing of the Holy Spirit who consecrates and sends forth, the priest is configured to the likeness of Jesus Christ, head and shepherd of the Church, and is sent forth to carry out a pastoral ministry....The sacrament of holy orders confers upon the priest sacramental grace which gives him a share not only in Jesus' saving power and ministry but also in his pastoral love." At the same time it ensures that the priest can count on all the actual graces he needs, whenever they are necessary and useful for the worthy and perfect exercise of the ministry he has received.” These words from St. John Paul II’s Pastores Dabo Vobis are comforting to say the least. The demands and trials of the priesthood calls one forth to greatness (just as the trials and demands of marriage and the other vocations calls one to greatness). That greatness, we often times do not reach. In the face of those de-mands and trials we become acutely aware of our failures and weaknesses. In this spot of weakness is where Jesus wants to dive in and go to work. In this spot of weakness is where Jesus wants us to know that we can count on Him. During this first year, I have “counted” on Him and leaned on Him time and time again. That being said, the joys of my first year as a priest have been so much greater than I could have imagined. As I mentioned in a homily a few weeks ago: I love being a priest! I love being your priest. Much has been made over the tears I shed when I found out I was assigned to OLM. Au-rora?!? Where is that? Diocese of Rockford? Now, I can’t imagine having been sent any-where else. OLM is now home. Thank you! Thank you for all your support and encour-agement. Thank you for your prayers. Most of all, thank you for teaching this guy fresh out of the seminary how to be a priest. In Him,

Esa grandeza, muchas veces no alcanzamos. ¿¡¿Aurora?!? ¿Donde es eso? Diócesis de Rock-ford? Ahora, no puedo imaginar haber sido enviado a otro lado. OLM ahora es mi casa. ¡Gracias! In Him,

Caring for the Mind, Body and Spirit May is American Stroke Month and National High Blood Pressure Education Month A stroke occurs when blood vessels of the brain are either narrowed or clogged cutting off blood flow to brain cells (ischemic stroke) or when a blood vessel ruptures in or near the brain (hemorrhagic stroke). 80% of strokes are preventable! High blood pressure is the most important controllable risk factor. Anyone can have a stroke and everyone should be prepared. Do you know the warning signs of a stroke and what action to take? The F.A.S.T. warning signs is an easy way to remember how to recognize a stroke and what to do. F is for FACE DROOPING – does one side of the face droop or is it numb? A is for ARM WEAKNESS – Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward? S is for SPEECH DIFFICULTY – is speech slurred or difficult to understand? T is for TIME TO CALL 911 – if someone shows any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms go away, call 911 right away. Other signs of a stroke are sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body; sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding; sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes; sudden trouble walk-ing, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination and/or sudden severe headache with no known cause. When was the last time that you had your blood pressure checked? High blood pressure has an effect on one’s health as it may lead to stroke, heart attack and heart failure. According to the 2017 Guideline for the Prevention, Detection, Evalua-tion and Management of High Blood Pressure in Adults, the following blood pressure categories are followed. Normal blood pressure is systolic pressure less than 120 mmHg and diastolic pressure less than 80 mmHg. An elevated blood pressure is when the systolic pressure is between 120-129 mmHg and the diastolic pressure is less than 80 mmHg. High blood pressure Stage1 is a systolic pressure between 130-139 mmHg or a diastolic pressure between 80-89 mmHg. High blood pressure Stage 2 is a systolic pressure of 140 mmHg or higher or a diastolic pressure 90 mmHg or higher. A hypertensive crisis is considered when the systolic pressure is higher than 180 mmHg and/or the diastolic pressure is higher than 120 mmHg. In this case, the doctor should be consulted immediately. (Article source: American Heart Association) Did you know that blood pressure screenings are offered after masses once a month by healthcare professionals who volunteer their time and talent to provide the screenings? Please take advantage of this service when it is available. It will be announced in the pulpit announcements when the screenings are being provided. For Pastoral Care concerns, please contact Jolene LeRoy, RN, Director of Pastoral Care at 331-707-5380.

ANY INTEREST? I’ve recently been approached by Sean Nadeau, Dis-trict Executive for the Three Fires Council Boy Scouts of America to see if there would be any interest for OLM to sponsor a Cub and/or Boy Scout Troop. Ob-viously one of the considerations will be if we have space available. I also want to gage what interest and commitment there would be from parents. So parents, if you are interested in starting and leading a troop or interested in having this oppor-tunity for your children, please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thanks! - Fr. Don

Graduation Time!

To acknowledge and congratulate parish members who are graduating this year (middle school, high school, college, or post graduate) we would like to list their name and the school they went to in the June 24th bul-letin.

Please email the graduates name and the name of the school (majors will not be listed) to [email protected] by June 10th.

Come join us in the OLM Mixed Bowling League!

If you have contemplated whether to join, please consider the following:

Give yourself a night out once/month while not being out late. We are not professional bowlers, many do not play outside of this league. All ranges of bowling scores are appropriate. Using a house ball and renting shoes is com-mon practice. It is only once/month, not a big commit-ment.

If you have thought about joining a league, now is the time to give it a try. You will meet some new people in the parish and have a good time while at it.

There are 4 players to a team, but we will build a team for <4 players who wish to join. Substitutes to bowl on any team are also welcome. Our OLM Mixed Bowling League bowls on the fourth Friday of every month begin-ning in August 2018 through May 2019 (no bowling in December) at 7PM with the exception of November which will be the 5th Friday and May which will be the 3rd Friday to avoid holiday weekends.

Fees will be $32 per couple per month. Two months fees will be collected in August; no fees are collected in May 2019. If you have questions and/or would like to join the league, please give Dan Panozzo a call at 815-302-4111 or email at [email protected].

Come on out and join the fun!

Dan Panozzo President of the OLM Bowling League
