November 25, 2018 – Christ the King (B) FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK…… Also Known As Chardonnay W(h)ines!

Today we celebrate the Feast of Our Lord Jesus, Christ the King! But what is the point of calling Christ “the king”? After all, we gave up on kings a long time ago. In America we fought a revolution to get rid of kings. It can seem an antiquated image. But did you know that the feast itself was instituted less than a hundred years ago? Pope Pius XI formalized it in 1925. With the rise of secularism, nationalism, and global strife, he sought to remind us that Christ is the true sovereign of all. It is in Christ that peace shall reign. Certainly we need that reminder today! It would be an understatement to say we live in “divided times.” Warring political philosophies, economic upheaval, and shifting global climates are signs that not all is right with the world. Taken up with anxiety and fear, we are often tempted to blame others or fall prey to ideology. It is only in trusting the one who has made us that we can ever hope to overcome such conflict. Christ has taken everything into himself and sacrificed himself for the salvation of the world. It is in such divine love that all will be healed. It is by such love that God will reign in Christ. So, perhaps we DO need a King! The kingship of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior needs to be invited and accepted in our lives and world! Let’s pray for that as the feast of Christ the King brings our liturgical year to an end.

Next weekend, the First Sunday of Advent, begins a new year in the liturgical calendar of the church. The scripture readings for Sunday Mass are arranged in a three-year cycle. Year A we hear primarily from the Gospel of Matthew. Year B Mark’s gospel, and Year C Luke’s gospel. During the Easter season every year we hear primarily from John’s Gospel. The weekday Mass readings are arranged in a two-year cycle. So, on December 1st & 2nd this year, the First Sunday of Advent, we start cycle C, primarily Luke’s gospel. The weekday readings will be year 1. So, what might we expect to learn about Jesus and his mission from Luke’s telling of the story? First, in his account of the birth of Jesus, he places the event squarely into the flow of history: Caesar Augustus was the emperor and Quirinius the governor. At a particular time and place God’s Son comes into the world and into history to redeem the earth and all of the people in it. However, this understanding of Jesus and his mission was at odds with another, extremely popular understanding of Jesus in some of the ancient Churches. These Churches understood Jesus to be a divine, not human, revealer who suddenly appeared in the world as an adult in order to teach people the means by which they might escape from the world to a higher, more heavenly existence. Those who understood Jesus’ teaching in this way would claim that this world was not worth saving and that only the heavenly or spiritual world mattered. These Christians joined sectarian groups that would set themselves apart from the concerns of this world and their fellow Christians. Thus, when Luke tells the story of Jesus being born as a baby in a manger in a particular place and time, he has in mind both the full humanity of Jesus and the face that Jesus will care about, and ultimately redeem creation and all the people in it. Oops! I’ve run out of space, so more about Luke’s theology in future articles!

Have a Blessed Week! Fr Don

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Although our Puritan forebears at Plymouth Rock were almost a hundred years removed from their Catholic roots, the old liturgical calendar still had an unconscious claim on their hearts. We’ve already seen how on Saint Martin’s Day, No-vember 11, medieval continental Europe observed a great harvest day of Thanksgiving, with games, dances, parades, and a festive dinner of roast goose. With the goose went ample draughts of “Saint Martin’s Wine,” the first wine of the new harvest. Martinmas celebrated full barns and larders stocked for the winter. Even after the Reformation, the tradition of eating goose on Saint Martin’s Day was retained in Holland, and it was there that our Pilgrims encountered this tradition. When Governor Bradford sent four hunters out into the Massachusetts wilderness in the autumn of 1621, they did indeed find some geese and ducks, and were persuaded by the indigenous people to try turkey, too. Just as the liturgical calendar has been tweaked over the years, President Roosevelt moved Thanksgiving to the

CHRIST IS KING On the final Sunday of the liturgical year we celebrate the feast of Christ the King. It’s easy to understand today’s scriptures as events that happened long ago and far away, or predictions that will come true somewhere, some day. But they invite us to claim Christ as our King here and now. Jesus’ words to Pilate in the Gospel remind us that his kingdom transcends time and place. And the prophecies from Daniel and Revelation give us reason to be faithful to Christ our King right here and right now. By concluding the year with this feast we are proclaiming our faith that Jesus Christ is the one and only King over all seasons, all peoples, and all of creation. No matter what nation we belong to or what language we speak, he “has made us into a kingdom” (Revelation 1:6)—one people united in love and peace for all eternity. Copyright © J. S. RELIGIOUS EDUCATON (Grades K-5)

Preparing & Practicing Discipleship ALL parish faith formation programs echo the call to live the Great Commandment- Love God and Love our neighbor as ourselves. We seek to express Jesus' love in a variety of ways that shines a light on The Light of the World working through us to serve others. As Jesus' disciples and saints in the making, the RE community is learning about Hesed House with the help of colleague and parishioner, Mrs. Jean Rehmer- a volunteer of Hesed House for fifteen years. She explained to the R.E. community last week how Hesed House is a special place that offers a special space for families with young children in need of food and shelter. As the director of the program, I invited the children to each join one an-other in donating a quarter (or more) of their own money that could grow into more than one hundred dollars. Our donations will go toward purchasing the January 1st break-fast, lunch and dinner at Hesed House, the date our parish, adult volunteers come together to prepare and serve the meals. It was moving to see the children's eager faces to participate in this act of loving our neighbor as ourselves. On Dec. 3, 4, and 5, both Edge and R.E. catechists will collect the quarters of anyone wishing to participate in this Hesed House fund drive. We'll celebrate Jesus' call to live a life of loving service with cocoa and cookies!

Undy SUNDAY

THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROUS DONATIONS! Dear Friends:

On behalf of Catholic Charities, Diocese of Joliet I would like to thank Our Lady of Mercy for participating in the 16th annual Undy Sunday collection drive. This year 50 parishes, schools, and other organizations collected an enormous amount of underwear, socks, undershirts, and diapers for individuals who live in very low-incomes. Underwear is a subject most of us don't think about very often, but it's an item that is badly needed by those who are homeless and oth-ers who experience poverty. In fact, underwear, diapers, and socks are among the most-requested items by our clients at Catholic Charities. Items like these, which many of us take for granted, are a luxury for those who live on low-incomes. Thanks to your generosity, this will be one less thing for our clients to worry about. Thank you for your support of Catholic Charities and the work we do. May God continue to bless you and your family. Sincerely, Glenn Van Cura Executive Director—Catholic Charities, Diocese of Joliet
