“…let us stand beside our brothers and sisters in need, sharing our spiritual and material goods with them.”

- Pope Francis

Almsgiving in Lent

During the Lenten Season we are asked to pray, fast and give alms.

Lent is a perfect time for us to pray for those in need - whether it is for their material, emotional or spiritual needs. And when you practice fasting and

abstinence during these forty days, please remember those of our neighbors who are hungry, and consider sharing your gifts with them.

One way to do this is by making a gift to the Catholic Ministries Appeal, which supports programs that help to feed people in our community each year through

Catholic Charities and our Parish Outreach programs.

Have you thought about “fasting” from a regular purchase of something – i.e., a hand-crafted beverage? Over a 10 month period, this simple “fast” can serve many

people need!

$6.25 a week for one month is $25 -- over 10 months it is $250.

For more information about the Catholic Ministries Appeal, please visit CatholicMinistriesAppeal.org or call 516-678-5800 ext. 296.

On Stewardship Spirituality

Living

Ste

The readings on this First Sunday of Lent cover the entire-ty of our Lenten journey from the story of Creation to Jesus’s trials in the desert to the Crucifixion. They are reminders that we are of this earth, we will face tests in our time on it, but we are made for something more than this earth. Paul tells us that we should, especially during Lent, pursue righteousness and grace—goodness and the grace of God. Lent is a Time of Action Stewardship Spirituality, which recognizes that God creates and gifts us with all that we are and all that we have, also appeals to us to live in a righteous way—meaning to live a life that is good. Stewardship is a way of life, a way of living life which is good. (See how nicely that all ties together?) Our faith and our stewardship begin with the recognition that God is the source of all things. In the creation story, we are told that God molds us from the earth and breathes the Spirit of life into us. We are both physical (of the earth) and spiritual. If we lose our spiritual self, we are nothing but the earth, and we re-turn to dust. Just as we hear on Ash Wednesday: “For you are dust, and unto dust you shall return.” Our Lenten journey is emphasized in the telling of Jesus’s trials in the desert. He was tested by the devil. We face tests and during Lent, when we choose to abstain from habits or behaviors, or fast, we can see how difficult it can be to attempt this alone. It is with faith and prayer—the fullness of the Lenten expe-rience—that we will succeed.

Let Lent be a call to action, not just abstinence. This is the reality which we face during Lent. It is not so much that we need to be prepared to resist temptation when we give things up or deny our-selves. Even more, we need to be prepared to face the test of living our lives correctly. Our approach should not just be self-denial, but actions which demonstrate our desire to become closer to God. As Stewards, we know that we are people of action, called to do good works, to love and help one another, and build His Kingdom. Lent is a time of action and Stewardship is a way of living based in action. Con-sider what else you can do to make this a more meaningful Lent and ultimately a more joyous Easter.

Lent is a call to “give alms for the poor.” Wherever you live in the parish, there are poor families within walking distance of your home. When in need, they ring the rectory bell. They are, in effect, ring-ing your doorbell.

Is there a family you know who needs assis-tance? Please call the Society of St. Vincent de Paul so that together we can help the suffer-ing and poor.

The Gospel of Matthew II: The Teaching of Jesus

This Bible Study course will continue the Gospel According Matthew begun in the fall. After we finish Matthew, we will move on to reading the Book of

Revelation. Each class combines instruction with prayer, enabling the student to grow in both knowledge and

spirit. The goal is to provide personal connections with Scripture at a time when the Bible may seem to be an

ancient document lacking contemporary relevance. Instructor: Louis Mocci ([email protected]).

Admission is free. Classes will meet on Tuesday evenings from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm in the Convent

ALMSGIVING The foundational call of Christians to charity is a frequent theme of the Gospels. During Lent, we are asked to focus more intently on "almsgiving," which means donating money or goods to the poor and performing other acts of charity. As one of the three pillars of Lenten practice, almsgiving is "a witness to fraternal charity" and "a work of justice pleasing to God."

(Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 2462).

Pray for All Life

What is meditation?

"Meditation is above all a quest." Meditation is a Christian practice of prayer dating back to the early Church. As the Catechism states: "Meditation is above all a quest. The mind seeks to un-derstand the why and how of the Christian life, in order to adhere and respond to what the Lord is asking." By meditating on the Gospels, holy icons, liturgical texts, spiritual writings, or "the great book of creation," we come to make our own that which is God's. "To the extent that we are humble and faithful, we discover in meditation the movements that stir the heart and we are able to discern them. It is a question of acting truth-fully in order to come into the light: "Lord, what do you want me to do?" (CCC 2705-2706).

Pope Francis' Intention for MARCH 2020

Catholics in ChinaWe pray that the Church in China may

persevere in its faithfulness to the Gospel and grow in unity.

Prayer for Vocations

“Becoming a priest or a man or woman religious is not primarily our own decision.... Rather it is the response to a call and to a call of love."

PREPARE OUR HEARTS FOR LENTChrist said, "Man does NOT live by

bread alone." (Mt. 4:4; Lk. 4:4) This liberates us from total de-

pendence on food, on matter, on the world. Thus, for the Christian, fasting is the only means by which

man recovers his true spiritual nature. In order for fasting to be

effective, then, the spirit must be a part of it.

A divided country. Fights at the dinner table. Political vitriol. What does it mean to love our

neighbors in the midst of such a climate? As Catholics, we have a long tradition of engagement in the political process as a means of putting our faith into action. We are called to bring the best of ourselves and our faith to the public square—and yet today, many shy away from such involvement because our national and local conversations are filled with vitriol and harsh language, often directed at people themselves. When personal attacks replace honest debate, no one wins. This kind of attack, no matter the reason, only serves to further divide our communities. As Catholics, we must model a better way. We invite you to join the Civilize It campaign by taking the pledge below as a way to promote civility, love our neigh-bors, and build community. Civilize It is about making room in your heart for those with whom you disagree. We are called to recognize that each one of us is a beloved child of God and to respond in love to that reality. Civilize It is a non-partisan call to focus on the dignity of all people, even when we disagree, and to put faith in action by bearing witness to a better way forward. Take the pledge below as an individual, family, or commu-nity. Anyone and everyone can commit together to honoring human dignity through civil conversation.

I PLEDGE:1. Civility

To recognize the human dignity of those with whom I disagree, treat others with respect, and rise above attacks

when directed at me.2. Clarity

To root my political viewpoints in the Gospel and a well formed conscience, which involves prayer, conversation, study and listening. I will stand up for my convictions and speak out when I witness language that disparages others' dignity, while also listening and seeking to understand others’ experiences.

3. CompassionTo encounter others with a tone and posture which affirms

that I honor the dignity of others and invites others to do the same. I will presume others’ best intentions and listen to their

stories with empathy. I will strive to understand before seeking to be understood.
