Dear Parishioners, In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us that the two greatest commandments are: You must love the Lord your God…..and you must love your neighbour as yourself. Only when we love ourselves, will we be able to love other people as the Lord commanded. We can see then why the emphasis on love became for Christians, the identifying characteristic of their religion. Christ showed us how to live the total Gospel, that is, how to love God and to love our neighbour as well. He didn’t say they were the same thing, but that we can’t have one without the other. The Mass is the best means we have both for expressing our love of God and for growing in that love. Mass makes us think about God. We hear his words in the scriptures and homily. The Mass is also our way of telling God we love him through the prayers and hymns. We pray also that Jesus may make of us, an everlasting gift to his Father. The Mass should never be just a routine. It is too vital to our relationship with God and with our neighbour. November is the time we remember our loved ones and friends who have died. On Saturday, 4 th November at 11.00am we will celebrate a Memorial Mass for all those who have died in the last 12 months. Please if you have not registered, contact the Parish Office on Monday, 30 th October, as it is the last day. All Saints: we will celebrate All Saints on Wednesday, 1 st November at 8.30am (Sunnybank) All Souls: we will celebrate All Souls on Thursday, 2 nd November at 9.00am and 7.00pm (Sunnybank) Memorial Book: there are books on the tables at the front door of the church to write the names of all our loved ones and friends who have died who will be remembered during the Masses of November. Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time: Year A

Introduction: How to live a life of love is the focus of Today’s readings. It is not about which Law is the most important but the Spirit of the Law which is the very nature of God.

First Reading: Exodus 22: 20-26 How are the people of Israel to live? They are to be mindful of the poor and needy in their midst, neither molesting, oppressing, ill-treating, or harassing them. In this the chosen people are to remember that the compassionate God is the champion of the poor, and they themselves were once aliens.

Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 1: 5c-10 Paul blesses the Thessalonian community for the way it has taken up the life of faith. He remarks on the way the members welcome the word, adhere to the example of their teachers, and themselves have become an example to other communities and churches.

Gospel: Matthew 22: 34-40 As Jesus continues to be tested the questions get harder. The Pharisees, who see in the law a spirituality of God and a path to life in the divine, now ask which of all the laws is the most superior. Jesus response that it is love - of God and neighbour - is both simple and sublime.

‘THE JOY OF LOVE’ FROM POPE FRANCIS Looking to Jesus: The Vocation of the Family

The Family in the Documents of the Church

69. “Saint John Paul II devoted special attention to the family in his catechesis on human love, in his Letter to Families Gratissimam Sane and particularly in his Apostolic Exhortation Familiaris Consortio. In these documents, the Pope defined the family as ‘the way of the Church’. He also offered a general vision of the vocation of men and women to love, and proposed basic guidelines for the pastoral care of the family and for the role of the family in society. In particular, in speaking about conjugal love (cf. No. 13), he described how spouses, in their mutual love, receive the gift of the Spirit of Christ and live their call to holiness.” 70. “Pope Benedict XVI, in his Encyclical Deus Caritas Est, returned to the topic of the truth of the love of man and woman, which is fully illuminated only in the love of the crucified Christ (cf. No.2). He stressed that “marriage based on an exclusive and definitive love becomes an icon of the relationship between God and his people, and vice versa. God’s way of loving becomes the measure of human love’ (11). Moreover, in the Encyclical Caritas in Veritate, he highlighted the importance of love as a principle of life in society (cf. 44), a place where we learn the experience of the common good”.

SUNNYBANK SOCIAL JUSTICE COMMUNITY - ‘EVERYONE’S BUSINESS’ IS OUR BUSINESS

The market must not be a place where ‘the strong subdue the weak.’ As Pope Francis insists, respect for the dignity of the human person and care for creation demand ‘more balanced levels of production, a better distribution of wealth, concern for the environment and for the rights of future generations.

At the next community meeting on Thursday, 2nd November at 7.00pm in the Media Room, the personal and societal implications of the recent Bishops’ Social Justice Statement Everyone’s Business: Developing an inclusive and sustainable economy’ will be the main topic of discussion.

All are welcome to join the discussion on the statement which has great implications for the future of our nation and the world generally. Copies of the statement are available on the Australian Catholic Social Justice Council website at: www.socialjustice.catholic.org.au.
