There are four main basilicas in the Eternal City of Rome. Most think that St. Peter’s is the most important. But actually, St. John Lateran is the greatest of the four as it bears the privilege of being an archbasilica. You see this church is the very cathedral in Rome and is home to the papal throne making it the highest of all the temples built to the honor and glory of the Triune God. The original structure was built by order of the Emperor Constantine in the early 4 th century. It is dedicated to Christ the Savior, as well as to the great precursor of our Lord, St. John the Baptist. On one of the church’s walls, you will find an important inscription which reads, St. John Lateran Church omnium urbis et orbis ecclesiarum mater et caput. Yes, this structure…the cathedral of the bishop of Rome…is truly the mother and head of all the churches of the Eternal City and all the churches of the world. There are many titles that one can attach to the Roman Catholic Church. She is the Mystical Body of Christ on earth. She is the House of God and the Gate of Heaven. And yes, she is the Vineyard of the Lord and the Spotless Bride of Christ. But of all the titles, perhaps the most beautiful and touching is that she is Holy Mother Church. She is the Supernatural Mother for all the faithful, but her motherly instinct reaches out to all her potential members not yet amongst her children. N NOVEMBER 9TH, we celebrated the great feast of the Dedication of St. John Lateran. There are four main basilicas in the Eternal City of Rome. Most think that St. Peter’s is the most important. But actually, St. John Lateran is the greatest of the four as it bears the privilege of being an archbasilica. AJESTIC QUEEN OF HEAVEN AND MISTRESS OF THE ANGELS, thou didst receive from God the power and commission to crush the head of Satan; wherefore we humbly beseech

thee, send forth the legions of Heaven, that, under thy command, they may seek out all evil spirits, engage them everywhere in battle, curb their insolence, and hurl them back into the pit of Hell. “Who is like unto God?” O good and tender Mother, thou shalt ever be our hope and the object of our love. O Mother of God, send forth the holy Angels to defend us and drive far from us the cruel foe. Holy Angels and Archangels, defend us and keep us. Amen.

Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus wrote in one of her poems: “I know that it is necessary to pass through the fire in order to contemplate Thy glory. For myself, I choose for my Purga-tory, Thy burning love, O Heart of my God” (Poem No. 23). St. John of the Cross: The fires of Purgatory “would have no power over [faithful souls], even though they came into contact with it, if they had no imperfections for which to suffer. These are the material upon which the fire of Purgatory seizes; when the material is consumed there is naught else that can burn” St. Bernard of Clairvaux: “Time flies irrevocably, brethren, and while you think you are avoiding this minimal punishment, you incur a fuller one, for know this, that after this life whatever was neglected here will be repaid a hundred-fold in Purgatory, even to the last farthing. I know how hard it is for a man of dissolute life to take up discipline, for a talkative man to endure silence, for a man accustomed to wandering to remain in one place, but it will be harder and much harder to bear the discomforts to come.” St. Alphonsus Liguori: “Whosoever comes to the aid of these distressed souls, so dear to our Lord, may confidently hope to be saved; for if such a soul is released through his prayer and good works, it prays incessantly for his salvation, and God will not refuse to hear His spouse.” St. Jean Marie Vianney: “Alas, my dear brethren, what, then, will be the number of years which we shall have to suffer in Purgatory, we who have so many sins, we who, under the pretext that we have confessed them, do no penance and shed no tears? …my dear brethren… it is an article of faith: if we have not done penance proportionate to the greatness and enormity of our sins, even though forgiven in the holy tribunal of Penance, we shall be compelled to expiate them.... In Holy Scripture there are many verses which show clearly that although our sins may be forgiven, God still imposes on us the obligation to suffer in this world by temporal hardships or in the next by the flames of Purgatory… The fire of Purgatory is the same as the fire of Hell; the difference between them is that the fire of Purgatory is not everlasting.”
