Our Lady of Las Vegas ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH
- Faith, Family, Friends -
J 22, 2017 2 — O L L V C C
It’s been a couple of months since we’ve heard talk of the Catholic Stewardship Appeal; also known as the CSA. Through the support of our parishioners, we were able to reach our 2016 CSA goal of $113,018.00. Thank you to all our parishioners for your gracious generosity. The CSA campaign for 2017 is about to begin.
The Diocese of Las Vegas determines the CSA goal for each parish. It is based on size and annual income of each parish, and then divided among the 32 parishes within the diocese. The 2017 CSA goal for the Diocese of Las Vegas is $2,700,00.00. The assessed portion of this amount for Our Lady of Las Vegas Parish has been determined as $121,255.00. As Roman Catholics, we are all members of the universal Church. Even though our local parish is the center where we live and practice our faith, we are also connected to and part of the Church beyond our parish here in our diocese and throughout the world. When making a contribution to the CSA, where exactly does your contribution go and whom does it benefit? That’s a very good question. Most people, by nature, have generous hearts and are very willing to help other people who are in need. So, in order to give you a better idea of what the CSA funds are used for, the Diocese of Las Vegas has put together a break down of all CSA contributions:
1. Twenty-two cents of every dollar goes towards helping the formation of new priests. As everyone knows, the cost of higher education is expensive. Learning, formation, room and board are all part of the preparation for the priesthood. While our seminarians must bear most of the financial burden, your CSA contributions help to make that burden a little lighter.
2. Fifteen cents of every dollar goes towards helping to deepen the faith of children, youth and adults, including the Diocesan Conference on Catechesis.
3. Ten cents goes towards campus ministry at UNLV. 4. Six cents goes towards leadership for our Diocesan Catholic School System. 5. Twenty-two cents goes towards support for retired priests. 6. Seven cents goes toward helping the services of Catholic Charities. 7. Seven cents goes toward helping to support smaller rural parishes and missions out in the more sparsely
populated areas of the diocese. 8. Four cents goes toward helping in education and advocacy programs, family programs and keeping Catholic
values and presence in our state. 9. Six cents is designated for Sunday mass on television for people hospitalized and homebound.
10. One cent helps to support the running and upkeep of the diocesan website and communication. Every parish family should have received a letter from the diocese regarding the 2017 CSA goal. If you haven’t yet received it, you should be receiving it soon. Each parish household is asked to make a donation, either through a one-time offering or a pledged offering that can be made over a series of monthly payments throughout the year. Another option is to donate through the green CSA envelopes in your monthly envelope packet. Also, there will be second collections taken up at mass for CSA on various Sundays. You can always place your donation in the “CSA BOX” in the vestibule of the church. Please prayerfully consider your CSA donation for 2017. Your donation will help in the Church’s extended ministry and will help us meet our parish goal. Thank you so much for our kind and generous consideration. Fr. Gerry

Prayer Intentions of the Holy Father JANUARY 2017
Christian Unity: That all Christians may be faithful to the Lord’s teaching by striving with prayer and fraternal charity to restore ecclesial communion and by collaborating to meet the challenges facing humanity.
REMINDER - Do not leave your purse or valuables in your vehicle or in the pews.
A Note about Cold & Flu Season Please be mindful of not shaking others’ hands for the Sign of Peace when you are sick and could pass on germs, especially during flu season. No one is obligated to shake hands at the sign of peace. As an alternative to shaking hands, you may simply bow to those around you and say, “Peace be with you.” If your fellow parishioners decide upon this option, do not be offended, as it is merely for sanitary concerns and is not personal.
You may want to also consider not taking the Blood of Christ while you are sick.
Catholic Mass for the Homebound - The Diocese offers a televised Mass for the home-bound each Sunday at 7:30am on KFBT Channel 33.1 Digital (no longer an analog signal) or Cox Cable Channel 6.
Immaculate Heart Radio - Now in Las Vegas, you can listen to Catholic radio 24-hours a day by tuning your radio to 970am.
First Reading — The burdens that were once laid upon the people have been vanquished (Isaiah 8:23 — 9:3). Psalm — The Lord is my light and my salvation (Psalm 27). Second Reading — Paul exhorts the believers at Corinth: As there is one Christ, so too must there be no divisions among you. (1 Corinthians 1:10-13, 17). Gospel — After calling his first disciples, Jesus goes throughout Galilee teaching, proclaiming the gospel, and curing the people (Matthew 4:12-23 [12-17]). Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, For over 50 years, the Collection for the Church in Latin America has been a sign of the solidarity of the Church in the United States with the Church in Latin America and the Caribbean. For people living in these regions, barriers to practicing the faith include lack of resources, shortages of pastoral agents, and poor infrastructures that make relatively simple things like participating in weekly Mass difficult. Your support of the collection helps to share the faith with those who long to experience God’s mercy within strong faith communities. For example, in northern Peru, great distances and deteriorated roads mean that church agents must often travel by foot or mule to rural communities. As a result, some communities are visited by pastoral agents and ministers only once per month, others sometimes just twice per year. The Collection for the Church in Latin America was able to help fund training for 65 pastoral ministers for the communities in this region. Because of your support, these new leaders continue to reach out and serve the rural communities, ensuring that all feel included in our family of faith. Our diocese takes up this collection the weekend of January 28 and 29, 2017. Please be generous in this collection, and take this opportunity to share your faith with families in Latin America and the Caribbean. Your support will truly make a difference. In fact, in a letter to Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz and the entire Catholic community in the United States, Pope Francis commended the work of the collection, saying, “Through your support, many lives have been touched by the Good News of Christ’s merciful love, especially for the poor.” Thank you and God bless you. Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Joseph A. Pepe, D.D., J.C.D. Bishop of Las Vegas
