D 10, 2017 2 — O L L V C C

This Sunday is the Second Sunday of Advent. We are well into our observance of the Advent season. This year’s Advent season will be the shortest it can be. By contrast, last year’s Advent season was the longest it can be. What’s the reason for the difference? It all has to do with the day of the week on which Christmas falls. Last year, Christmas fell on a Sunday. So, the Sunday before Christmas, which is always the Fourth Sunday of Advent, was observed on December 18. This allowed for Advent to be was a full four-week observance last year. This year Christmas falls on a Monday, which means the Fourth Sunday of Advent falls on December 24. By contrast, the Advent season this

year is only three weeks and one day long. No matter how long or short the Advent season is, there are always four Sundays of Advent. With the Fourth Sunday of Advent being observed on Christmas Eve this year, there will certainly be some confusion with regards to Mass attendance on Sunday and Christmas Day. The question is already being asked, “will I have to attend mass on Sunday and Christmas?” Without making this sound like a horrible thing, the answer to this question is yes. The liturgy for the Fourth Sunday of Advent and the liturgy for Christmas are two very different celebrations. Sunday will focus on the anticipation of the Lord’s coming, while Christmas celebrates his birth. These are two very different types of celebration, each deserving its own attention. The masses on Saturday, December 23, at 4:30pm, and on Sunday, December 24 at 6:30am, 8:00am, 10:00am, 12:00noon and 1:30pm (Polish) will satisfy the obligation for the Fourth Sunday of Advent. The masses on Sunday, December 24 at 4:00pm, 6:00pm, 10:00pm(Polish) and on Monday, December 25 at 12:00Midnight, 8:00am, 10:00am, 12:00noon and 1:30pm(Polish) will satisfy the obligation for Christmas. We all know the old saying, “kill two birds with one stone”. Let’s not apply this to the Fourth Sunday of Advent and Christmas this year. Even though they are only a day apart, each day deserves it’s due. God deserves better from us. With Him we should never cut corners. Remember, God will never be outdone in generosity and goodness. All of us are is need of His grace.

Normally, the solemn feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary on December 8 falls during the Second week of Advent. Again, because of the shorter Advent season this year, it fell during the first week and we observed it last Friday. Even though it is past, we must remember that the Immaculate Conception of Mary is one of the most important dogmas of our Catholic faith. The Immaculate Conception means that Mary, at the first moment of her existence, when she was conceived in the womb of her mother, St. Ann, was graced by God to be without sin. Every human being, due to our fallen nature, is marred with Original Sin at conception. Mary was protected by God to be without original sin, and without any personal sin, so that she could be the Mother of God’s Son. This was necessary so that Mary would never be subject to Satan, and that she would always be totally united with God. As the Angel Gabriel announced, “Hail full of grace, the Lord is with you.” (Luke1,28) Mary is the chosen one of God to be the “New Eve” who, together with her Son, would crush the serpent’s head. Mary is the powerful instrument of God, who has declared warfare on sin, and brought us to victory and given us salvation though our Lord, Jesus Christ.

I would like to thank all of our parishioners for helping Catholic Charities with your Turkey donations for Thanksgiving. This year we collected 98 frozen turkeys! Thank you so very much! God bless you! Fr. Gerry

READINGS FOR THE WEEKREADINGS FOR THE WEEKREADINGS FOR THE WEEK

Many people scoff at the idea of miracles. Unwilling to believe that Jesus could restore the sight of the blind when He walked on earth, they are unwilling to see the miracles that Jesus continues to work today. If we are open to the guiding touch of God's hand and willing to discover His plan for our lives, miracles will happen. What prevents us from seeing and being a part of God's miracles? Would we rather be blind?

“God is merciful, and we must trust Him: that is essentially the Divine Mercy message given to Sister Faustina by Jesus. It sounds simple, almost trite, but when we realize the extent of His mercy, it is truly amazing.”

- Julie Onderko, Discover Your Next Mission from God

ADVENT The word Advent is from the Latin adventus for "coming" and is associated with the four weeks of preparation for Christmas. Advent always contains four Sundays, beginning on the Sunday nearest the feast of St. Andrew the Apostle, (November 30) and continuing until December 24. It blends together a penitential spirit, very similar to Lent, a liturgical theme of preparation for the Second and Final Coming of the Lord, called the Parousia, and a joyful theme of getting ready for the Bethlehem event.
