Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This weekend our archdiocese will take up the Collection for the

Church in Central and Eastern Europe. The collection offers a way for

Catholics in the United States to stand in solidarity with those who

experience the ongoing effects of living under communism.

Grants funded by the collection support pastoral projects, scholar-

ships, and Catholic organizations working in areas formerly under Soviet

control. The bishops and people of these regions still face enormous

challenges in restoring church structures and in rebuilding the cultural and

spiritual life of the community, tasks that are often complicated by a lack of

religious freedom.

One funded group, a Czech association for women and children and

the protection of unborn life (Obcanske sdruzeni ONZ-pomoc aporadenstvi

pro zeny a divky), has worked for 23 years to reduce the rate of abortions in

the Czech Republic. When the association opened its doors in 1990 after the

Velvet Revolution, half of all pregnancies in the country ended in abortion.

Through innovative counseling and support programs at six regional centers

for women in difficult situations, the association has played a major role in

reducing the abortion rate from 50 percent down to 20 percent. The centers

work to protect the human dignity of both mothers and children, advocating

for the right to life of the unborn.

Recently, the association experienced a crisis when the Czech government

withdrew operational support for its programs. The Subcommittee on the

Church in Central and Eastern Europe provided a critical bridge grant that

allowed the association to continue its operations while searching for a per-

manent funding solution. In 2014, the Czech Bishops' Conference announced

that it would fund the association's operating expenses from its own budget,

thereby guaranteeing the future of the association and its crucial work.

In order for projects like this one to continue, the collection needs

your help. Please be generous. Your donation will continue to restore and

build the future of the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. Thank you and

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

Este fin de semana, nuestra arquidiócesis realizara la Colecta para la

Iglesia en Europa Central y Oriental. La colecta ofrece a los católicos en Estados

Unidos una manera de solidarizarse con aquellos que están experimentando los

efectos continuos de haber vivido bajo el comunismo.

La colecta otorga donativos para financiar proyectos pastorales, becas y

organizaciones católicas que trabajan en áreas que estuvieron bajo el control

soviético. Los obispos y los pueblos de estas regiones aun enfrentan tremendos

desafíos para restaurar las edificaciones de las iglesias y para reconstruir la vida

cultural y espiritual de la comunidad, tareas que, con frecuencia, son complicadas

por la falta de libertad religiosa.

Uno de los grupos que recibe financiamiento es la asociación

checa para mujeres y niños y para la protección de la vida por nacer (Obcanske

sdruzeni ONZ-pomoc aporadenstvi pro zeny a divky), la cual ha trabajado a lo

largo de 23 años para reducir la tasa de abortos en la Republica Checa. Cuando

esta asociación abrió sus puertas en 1990, luego de la Revolución de Terciopelo,

la mitad de todos los embarazos en el país termino en aborto. A través de un ase-

soramiento innovador y de programas de apoyo en seis centros regionales para

mujeres en situaciones difíciles, la asociación ha desempeñado un importantísi-

mo papel en la reducción de la tasa de abortos, del 50 por ciento al 20 por ciento.

Los centros trabajan para proteger la dignidad humana, tanto de las madres co-

mo de los niños, abogando por el derecho a la vida de los que aun no han nacido.

Recientemente, la asociación experimento una crisis cuando el gobierno

checo retiro su apoyo para el funcionamiento de sus programas. El Subcomité

para la Iglesia en Europa Central y Oriental otorgo una donación vital que le per-

mitió a la asociación continuar sus operaciones mientras que buscaba una solu-

ción permanente para su situación económica. En el 2014, la Conferencia de

Obispos de la Republica Checa anuncio que iba a financiar los gastos de opera-

ción de la asociación utilizando su propio presupuesto y, por lo tanto, garantizan-

do el futuro de la asociación y su crucial labor.
