Dear Family,
In today’s world there are a lot of generalizations, especially when it comes to people. If you don’t believe them, then mention any
cohort of people by their political party, age, ethnicity or any sort of characteristic that would categorize a group of individuals.
Immediately, ideas begin to flood one’s mind about that group. I’m not suggesting this is a bad or unhealthy reaction, as a matter
of fact, it’s quite normal. We make judgments about our world, including people, by categorizing. It’s something our brains are
trained to do. The problem arises when we fail to consider that those groups are merely that, groups of individuals. The
attributes one has does not determine who they are. We often fail to see individuals when it is so easy, supported by media and
stereotypes, to group folks all together. The good news is, we have control over this, over what we decide to conclude. We can
decide to see the individual and we can decide to withhold judgement. Nevertheless because of our sinful inclinations, we need
the words of today’s Gospel where Jesus remind us: He is the ultimate judge and never to “throw out the baby with that bath
water.” The parable He uses, famously knows as the Parable of the Wheat and the Tares, is a good reminder that mercy should
be our way of life because we often don’t know the whole story, that appearances are often deceiving, and that as a human race
we are one giant mixed bag of vice and virtue. This reminds us that the only things we can ultimately control are becoming our
full self in Christ and allowing God to do the judging. Only He need take the burden of untangling the mixed-up mess that is our
intertwined intentions and lives.
In His joy, Fr. Daniel
