January 2018 “Be still and know that I am God!” (Psalm 46:10) Dear friends, In the middle of winter, after the joyous feast days of Christmas time, we have an in-between time, several weeks of Ordinary Time before Lent begins. It is a time to focus on the daily habits that we need to help us grow in virtue. We need the daily moments of prayer to help us be still for a moment and recognize God’s presence in our lives. We need stillness; we need silence at times in order to hear the voice of God in our hearts. We also need rest. The Lord has given us Sunday as a day of prayer, worship, and rest. “Without Christ we are condemned

For this reason we Christians go to encounter the Lord on Sunday, in the Eucharistic celebration” (Pope Francis, 12-13-17). Gathering in worship on Sunday helps us not to just rest from work, but to rest in the Lord. In Ordinary Time, and as we prepare for Lent and Easter to come, let’s renew that commitment to those regular habits and virtues—daily prayer, Scripture reading, Sunday Mass, and family prayer—that help us know and experience God’s presence in our daily lives. SEDER MEAL Palm Sunday, March 25 - 4:00 p.m.

“Seder Meal”? What is that? – The “Seder” meal is the traditional Passover Meal that has been celebrated by our Jewish brothers and sisters for thousands of years, ever since the first Passover that delivered God’s people from slavery in Egypt. It was celebrated by Jesus and His apostles at the Last Supper in Jerusalem, and is still celebrated around the world today. What does it involve? – Through an ordered sequence of stories, dialogue, songs, ritual foods and drink, the story of God’s deliverance of His people is told. Then a full meal is enjoyed together, celebrating God’s gift of food and fellowship! Why now, at Good Counsel? – The Seder Meal is a wonderful way to begin Holy Week, by recalling the Jewish roots of our faith. We can better understand the connection between the Passover Jesus celebrated in the Upper Room, with His Passion on the Cross, and the faith that we share today at every Mass. What should I bring? – Please bring your favorite potluck dish to share for the meal! (side dish, salad, dessert…) The parish will provide lamb and chicken, as well as all the needed ritual foods (matzah, horseradish, parsley, wine and grape juice, etc.). And…please bring a reverent and prayerful spirit as we move through the evening! How can I help? – GLAD YOU ASKED! Many hands will be needed to assist with setting up, serving and clean-up, of course! Special care must be taken in preparing for the Seder, so all volunteers are welcome on Saturday, March 24th, starting at noon in the gym. Should I sign up to attend? Who should attend? – Please sign up on the list in the vestibule, or call the church office, to help us know how much meat to prepare. Please feel free to invite guests from other parishes or other faiths to join us! Children are welcome, though very young kids may get restless during the quieter portion of the ritual.

¡Feliz año 2018! Los saludo con mucho cariño, deseando que para todos sea un año lleno del amor de Dios y que cada día se sientan acompañados por Él. En este articulo quiero compartir sobre mi comunidad religiosa de Misioneras Catequistas de los Pobres y la Vida Consagrada. Desde agosto, somos seis hermanas en la comunidad de Little Rock: tres dan su servicio en la Diócesis y tres en esta parroquia. Estamos felices porque dos de nuestras hermanas celebraran 50 años de vida Consagrada en el mes de abril. Desde hace algunos años, la Iglesia celebra a nivel mundial el día de la Presentación del Señor

a la Vida Consagrada, quiero invitarlos a orar por las vocaciones. Hace falta orar para que haya más jóvenes que consagren su vida al servicio del Señor, para que las familias sean lugares donde germine este deseo. En el Evangelio de Marcos 3, 13-15, nos dice que “Jesús llamo a los que Él quiso para que convivieran con Él y enviarlos a predicar…” Yo creo que el Señor hoy sigue llamando, que hace esta invitación a muchos, pero el ruido de la vida diaria no les permite escuchar su voz. Me da tristeza ver jóvenes con un gran potencial, con valores y virtudes que puede compartir pero que como el trabajador que recibió un

talento, lo entierren, en lugar de hacer que produzca más. Durante las posadas una joven se acerco a saludarme y me dijo “es una monja de verdad”, la miré, le sonreí y le dije “creo que sí” tocando mi brazo para decir que no era un sueño, que yo era real. Lo que quiero decir con esto es que a veces pensamos que solo existen “monjas” (como nos conocen más) en la televisión, y no saben que es una opción posible para su vida. Happy New Year 2018! I greet you with great affection and wishing everyone a year full of God’s love. I hope you feel His presence everyday. In this article I would like to share about my religious community, the Missionary Catechists for Poor and Consecrated Life. Since August we are six sisters in the Little Rock community, three serve the Diocese, whereas the other three serve this parish. We are happy because two of our sisters are celebrating 50 years of consecrated lives in April. For a couple of years now, the Church celebrates the presentation of the Lord to the Consecrated Life worldwide. I invite you to pray for vocations. We need to pray so there are more youth that consecrate their lives to the Lord, so that families are the place where this desire blooms. In the Gospel, Mark 3: 14 tells us

“(Jesus) appointed twelve [whom he also named apostles] that they might be with him and he might send them forth to preach…” I think the Lord continues to call many, but the noise of daily life doesn’t allow them to hear His voice. It makes me very sad to see youth with great potential, with values and virtues they can share. It is like the worker who received a talent and buried it instead of having the talent produce more. During the “posadas,” or Mexican Christmas parties, a young woman greeted me and asked if I was a real nun. I smiled and said, “I think so,” as she touched my arm to make sure I was real and not a dream. What I’m trying to say is that sometimes nuns only exist on TV and they don’t realize that this is an option in their lives. Let us pray that more youth will consecrate their lives to God.

Desde el escritorio de María Gracias a Dios que ya hemos pasado las fiestas decembrinas y con mucho éxito, ahora es tiempo de planear muchas actividades para este año que apenas está dando inicio; los saludo con mis mejores deseos para el 2018. Estimados miembros de la Parroquia, estoy muy contenta con todo lo que se realizó dentro del Programa de Educación Religiosa, fue un proceso de aprendizaje durante el año pasado, ahora sé que puedo

mejorar las cosas, con la ayuda de Dios, porque a Él debemos dar todo honor y Gloria, porque todo lo que somos, lo que tenemos y todo lo que hacemos es obra de Él. Estoy muy agradecida con Dios por los dones que me ha dado, para ponerlos al servicio de los demás, solo hay que hacer lo mínimo, que Dios es quien hace la mayor parte. No necesitamos muchas palabras para mostrar las maravillas del Señor, tan solo hay que mirar alrededor con mucha humildad y amor al prójimo, y reconoceremos cuanto nos ama. Dios nos Bendice siempre.

From Maria’s desk Thank God, we have already passed the holiday season and everything with great success, now it is time to plan many activities for this year that is just beginning; I greet you with my best wishes for 2018. Dear members of the Parish, I am very happy with everything that has happened within the religious education program, it was a learning process during the past year, now I know I can improve things with God’s help.

To Him we must give all honor and glory, because everything we are, everything we have, and everything we do is the work of God. I am very grateful to God, for the gifts that He has given me to put them at the service of others. We just do the minimum and God will do the rest. We don’t need many words to show the wonders of the Lord, we just must look around without pride and full of humility and much love to our neighbor and we will recognize how much He loves and blesses us.

We are already preparing for the retreat of the First Reconciliation for the children who will receive the First Communion. Also, we are thinking about Lent and the Stations of the Cross with soup suppers. The Paschal Triduum brings us to the Easter Vigil on Saturday, for which we have being preparing 10 Catechumens and 5 Candidates who will receive their Sacraments. Congratulations to all of them.

In my mind.....I have always had thoughts, even pictures, of how the walk along the Via Dolorosa might have looked like. In my mind.....it always was Jesus leading a procession of people along a path to His execution. Continuing - I could even envision the variety of people in that procession and what they could possibly be thinking! Some perhaps felt sadness, some watched with wonderment - "is this really going to come off?" Some may have felt amazement that they were even present - perhaps some were even praying for this man who would be nailed to a cross while wondering, "For what? What really did He do?" To one who occasionally thinks of the Via Dolorosa when coming in to our Adoration Chapel at Good Counsel in the wee hours of the morning, such musings become vivid. I often imagine that sound is added to the scene for sure, like a

dog barking in the distance, voices or perhaps even music. It's as if should I look around the corner, I would see the procession approaching! I hurry into the Chapel to express to Jesus my sadness at what He would endure, but definitely also in joyful thanksgiving, for His willingness to submit to such a heinous act for mankind. He paved the way for us to join that procession when on December 12, 1993, Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, we actually became the first parish in our State of Arkansas to offer this blessing. Now, some 25 years later, tho' not on a 24/7 basis, we still maintain a chapel where we can acknowledge His request to "spend one hour with Him" at a time of our choice and convenience. With the Eucharistic Adoration Chapel in our parish, and realizing that Lent, with all its possibilities of sacrificial offerings is just around the

corner, all that is necessary is for you to call the office and request your name be added as an Adorer to this much needed and rewarded ministry. Loretta Longinotti

The Patriotic Rosary for America is prayed each Friday at 3 p.m. in the Adoration Chapel. This is an important ministry of prayer for our Country of America while at

the same time reveals the religious heritage and background of our nation. The meditations for each decade are drawn from writings of our founding fathers and are as prayers also. Please allow approximately 45 minutes for this Rosary. Join us following the rosary for the Divine Mercy Chaplet!

Senior Moments - Friday Morning

Our Lady of Good Counsel is involved with the Our House Ministry. On the third Thursday of each month, we feed about 100 men, women, and children. Anyone that would like to make a donation, can make a check out to Our Lady of Good Counsel and place it in an envelope labeled Our House.
