Why do we ask the saints to Pray for us? The saints’ prayers for us are called “intercessory prayers.” Asking the saints to pray for us is “good and pleasing to God” and is encouraged in Scripture: “I ask that supplications, prayers, peti-tions, and thanksgivings be of-fered” (1 Timothy 2:1).

Intercessory prayer is powerful: by it, the saints help us on earth and we help those in Purgatory. Our prayers are joined to the prayers of Christ, who “never ceases to intercede for us” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, #2741).

¿Por qué pedimos a los santos que recen por no-sotros? Las oraciones de los santos por nosotros son las llama-das “plegarias de intercesión”. The par ish staff is al-ways looking to update our communion call list so that all can celebrate the sacraments with regular

Raffle You will see in your parish envelopes that each month

there will be a 50/50. An envelope is provided for

each month. To play the 50/50, please put $5.00 in the

envelope. The drawing will be held at the last Mon-

day of each month. The winner will win half and the

church will receive the other half. This is a small fun

way for the parish to raise money.

VEN ESPIRITU SANTOS

¡FELIZ CUMPLEAÑOS DE LA IGLESIA! Es cor recto, la Fiesta de Pentecostés es similar al nacimiento de la Iglesia, envi-ando discípulos de Cristo al mundo para dar testimonio de la salvación que proviene de Jesús, el Hijo de Dios al Espíritu San-to está siempre fresco y siempre listo para animarnos ydirigirnos. ¡Únete a mí para decir "Ven Espíritu Santo" durante todo el día Toda la semana! Confía en los dones del Espíritu Santo que ciertamente "llegarán" a nuestros corazones, a todo lo que nos rodea que necesitan el fuego del amor de Dios. Aquí hay una pequeña reflexión (Editada) de Don Stanner, un ministro laico de la parroquia de St. Germine en Illinois: Un signo de la unidad del Espíritu se dio en ese Día de Pente-costés cuando el Espíritu descendió sobre los discípulos en for-ma de lenguas de fuego y cada uno fue lleno del Espíritu Santo. El pasaje en Hechos nos dice que los judíos de muchos países diferentes que se habían reunido en Jerusalén para celebrar Pentecostés escucharon en su propio idioma lo que el Espíritu proclamó a través de los discípulos. En Pentecostés comenzó una nueva era en la que todos, independientemente de su idioma de origen, podían escuchar la Palabra de Dios a través del Espíritu. La evidencia de que estaban abiertos a escu-char el mensaje de Dios se ve en el hecho de que tres mil de ellos fueron bautizados ese día. La Escritura no dice que todos fueron bautizados dejándonos entender que otros no estaban dispuestos, al menos en ese momento, a aceptar la invitación de Dios al discipulado. Ya sea que seamos el producto del bautismo infantil o que haya-mos tenido una experiencia adulta de bautismo, el Espíritu de Dios está dentro de cada uno de nosotros. Como unificador, el Espíritu nos impulse a cada uno de nosotros a escuchar la Pala-bra de Dios para ser uno con Jesús que es uno con el Padre. Es a través d esta relación que nos volvemos uno con cada uno de los otros. Dios es quien nos elige en el Espíritu. No se trata de seguir la "ley" para hacernos a nosotros Mismos dignos pri-mero. Si fuera una cuestión de nuestra valía ninguno de nosotros calificaría. Pablo, era un seguidor estricto de la ley hasta que tuvo su experiencia en el camino a Damasco, finalmente llegó a la conclusión de que fue Dios quien nos amó primero y nos cor-responde a nosotros escuchar el llamado de Dios y responderle a Él. Pentecostés es in tiempo para que cada uno de nosotros escuche la invitación personal de Dios a vivir una vida bautiza-da. COME HOLY SPIRIT HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHURCH! That’s right, the feast of the Pentecost is akin to the birth of the church, sending disciples of Christ into the world to bear witness to the salvation that comes from Jesus, the Son of God. The Holy Spirit is ever fresh and ever ready to enliven us and to direct us. Join me in saying “Come Holy Spirit” throughout the whole day, the whole week! Trust in the Holy Spirit’s gifts that will indeed “come” into our hearts, into everything about us in need of the fire of God’s love. Here is a little (edited) reflection by Don Stanner, a lay minister from St. Germaine’s parish in Illinois: A sign of the Spirit’s unity was given on that Pentecost Day when the Spirit descended upon the disciples in the form of tongues of fire and each were filled with the Holy Spirit. The passage in Acts tells us that Jews from many different countries who had gathered in Jerusalem to celebrate Pentecost all heard in their own language what the Spirit proclaimed through the disciples. The miracle is not that each person heard what was proclaimed in his/her own language. The miracle is that each individual heard the word of God spoken to him or her directly. It was no longer only hearing the word of God through someone else, as they were accustomed. Throughout Jewish history, God had spo-ken through selected people such as Moses and the prophets. Pentecost began a new era in which everyone, regardless of his or her language of origin, could hear the word of God through the Spirit. The evidence that they were open to listening to the message of God is seen in the fact that three thousand of them were baptized that day. Scripture doesn’t say that all were bap-tized leaving us to understand that others were not willing, at least at that moment, to embrace God’s invitation to discipleship. Whether we are the product of infant baptism or had an adult experience of baptism, the Spirit of God is within each of us. As a Unifier, the Spirit prompts each of us to hear God’s word to be one with Jesus who is one with the Father. It is through this rela-tionship that we become one with each other. God is the one who chooses us in the Spirit. It is not about following the “law” to make ourselves worthy first. If it were a matter of our worthiness, none of us would qualify. Paul, a strict follower of the law until he had his Damascus road experience, ultimately came to the conclusion that is was God who first loved us and it is up to us to hear God’s call and respond to it. Pentecost is a time for each of us to hear God’s personal invitation to live a baptized life. The question is whether we will respond to His message or will His message be drowned out by the languages of the world that we are accustomed to hearing on a daily basis. Indeed, Come Holy Spirit! Fill the hearts of thy faithful. Send forth your Spirit and we shall be created and you shall renew the face of the earth!
