Welcome!

It is our pleasure to welcome you as a new member of Council 13044.

Hopefully you feel welcomed as a new member of our Council and will quickly realize the many

benefits and the many ways you can benefit others in need through the activities we support.

Our council is made up of a diverse group of over 200 members, mostly parishioners at OLA.

We welcome all men over the age of 18 who are practicing Catholics. We come from all walks

of life and strive to act as a single voice in support of our parish. OLA is known as one of the

smaller parishes in the Dallas Diocese but is one of the friendliest and most spiritually

rewarding. Hopefully, the reason you are a member of this parish is because you have seen and

experienced this firsthand - every time you have contact with any member for any reason.

Our primary goal is to support our parish in any way when asked - or doings things without

being asked. There are a lot of different activities, and a lot of ways you can interact within the

council. No activities are required, but when you engage, hopefully you will see and enjoy the

spirit in which we support the parish.

As a new member, you will get to see the different activities of the council in action. There is an

elected group of Officers and Directors, each with a share of overall responsibility to manage

the council’s activities. We welcome any and all members to learn more about each Officer and

Director position and become engaged in any way that may interest you.

As a first degree knight you will also have the opportunity to become a 2nd, 3rd or 4th degree

Knight. Every step you take will bring more focus to the value and benefits of Knighthood. We

encourage every knight to undertake this journey at their own pace. There are plenty of

opportunities to grow and experience the full journey through the Knight of Columbus.

Please take a moment to read through this manual to learn more about what we do and how

we do it, then prayerfully consider where your talents and desires will take you as a new

member of our council.

Background Information

From the moment of our founding in 1882, charity has been the first principle of the Knights of Columbus. We are men of faith and men of action.

Thanks to the efforts of Father Michael J. McGivney, assistant pastor of St. Mary’s Church in New Haven and some of his parishioners, the Connecticut state legislature on March 29, 1882, officially chartered the Knights of Columbus as a fraternal benefit society. The Order is still true to its founding principles of charity, unity and fraternity.

The Knights was formed to render financial aid to members and their families. Mutual aid and assistance are offered to sick, disabled and needy members and their families. Social and intellectual fellowship is promoted among members and their families through educational, charitable, religious, social welfare, war relief and public relief works.

The history of the Order shows how the foresight of Father Michael J. McGivney, whose cause for sainthood is being investigated by the Vatican, brought about what has become the world's foremost Catholic fraternal benefit society. The Order has helped families obtain economic security and stability through its life insurance, annuity and long-term care programs, and has contributed time and energy worldwide to service in communities.

The Knights of Columbus has grown from several members in one council to more than 15,100 councils and 1.9 million members throughout the United States, Canada, the Philippines, Mexico, Poland, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Panama, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, Cuba, Guatemala, Guam, Saipan, Lithuania, Ukraine, and South Korea.

All the good works we do are formed by our four core principles. Each principle corresponds to the four degrees associated with membership within the Knights:

Charity – (the first degree) Our Catholic faith teaches us to “Love thy neighbor as thyself.” Members of the Knights of Columbus conduct food drives and donating food to local soup kitchens and food pantries, by volunteering at Special Olympics, and by supporting both spiritually and materially, mothers who choose life for their babies.

Unity – (the 2nd degree) Members of the Knights of Columbus all know that together we can accomplish far more than any of us could individually. As a Knight of Columbus – you can count on the support and encouragement of your brother Knights as you work to make life better in your parish and community.

Fraternity – (the 3rd degree) Last year, the Knights, as brothers gave more than 10 million hours of their time to assist sick and/or disabled members and their families. The Order’s top-rated insurance program continues to do this today, In the Knights of Columbus; we watch out for and take care of one another as one family.

Patriotism – (The 4th degree) Members of the Knights of Columbus proud of our devotion to God and country, and believe in standing up for both. Whether it’s in public or private, the Knights remind the world that Catholics support their nations and are amongst the greatest citizens.

Every degree ceremony is designed to teach Knights about the principles of the organization. When you joined the Knights of Columbus, you underwent the First Degree (Charity) initiation. You can now participate in all council activities and subsequent degrees, but you are not yet eligible to become an Officer or Director within the Council. The Second Degree (Unity) and the Third Degree (Fraternity) are optional and usually held together on the same day. Following completion of this, you will have gained a deeper insight into the meaning of the Knights and CAN now hold office should you wish. The Fourth Degree Assembly (Patriotism) is also optional. Fourth Degree Knights attend additional monthly meeting and may become part of the assembly's color corps. These members are recognized widely by their distinctive attire of tuxedo, feathered hat (chapeau), cape and sword. These members regularly take part in civic events such as parades and wreath-laying ceremonies, and functions at Catholic churches. The various colored capes and chapeau feathers denote different officer positions within the Fourth Degree.

Program Descriptions

Church - The primary purpose of the Church committee is to provide support for activities directly

relating to masses and other Holiday service commitments.

Community – The primary purpose of community is to provide an interface for the activities that the

knight and OLA with the various outside organizations that we support, in addition to Lenten fish fry’s,

which are sponsored by the Knights for the benefit of the church community.

Council – The primary purpose of Council is to promote fraternity within the council through various

planned activities.

Family – The primary purpose of Family is to arrange for activities that directly support the families and

youth within the parish.

Fundraising – We try not to place the support of our fund-raising efforts on the parish community.

However, almost every activity we support requires some funding, so we look for outside fundraising

activities. We engage in two primary activities, and with each every active member’s participation we

can afford to fund the planned activities along with funding unique needs as they arise.

Pro-Life – We are committed to the sanctity of the unborn and support all local and regional pro-life

activities. Knights can earn Angels Wings by supporting 5 pro-life activities per year.

Youth - In combination with the Squires, there are activities focused exclusively on the youth of our

parish.

KoC Insurance

The Knights of Columbus is one of the world’s largest forces for good. In the past decade alone, the Knights of Columbus has donated more than $1.55 billion to charitable causes, and has performed more than 700 million hours of volunteer service.

The Knights of Columbus insurance program – coupled with the hard work and dedication of brother Knights anywhere – helps power the Knights of Columbus’ charitable giving.

“The insurance program is a powerful financial engine that supports much of the good works we do,” said Knights of Columbus Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. “Through the insurance program, we are blessed with the opportunity to give generously and support numerous charitable and spiritual causes, building up society and the Church.”

“Of course, this is closely tied to our Catholic identity and the fact that charity is our first principle,” he continued. “We are called to be ‘our brother’s keeper,’ and to look after the physical and spiritual well-being of those around us. But the fact is that without the insurance program, much of what we do….would simply not be possible.”

For three consecutive years, the Knights of Columbus has been designated a “World’s Most Ethical Company” by the Ethisphere Institute, and is one of only a handful of companies in the insurance industry to have earned the honor.

The “World’s Most Ethical Company” evaluation is a comprehensive assessment of all aspects of a business’ operation, including its corporate citizenship and responsibility, its culture of ethics, its governance, and its leadership, innovation, and reputation.

The Knights of Columbus is one of the largest life insurers in North America, and the largest Catholic life insurer in the world.

In November of 2015, the Knights of Columbus surpassed $100 billion of life insurance in force. Insurance in force is a calculation of the total amount of money owed to policy holders. Put differently, $100 billion of life insurance in force means that the Knights of Columbus has a $100 billion promise to members and their families.

The Knights of Columbus manages $21 Billion of assets from their international headquarters in New Haven, Conn. The Knights of Columbus manages its assets in an ethical and responsible way. The Knights does not invest in companies that deal in: abortions, contraception, human cloning, embryonic stem cell research, for-profit healthcare that pays for any of the aforementioned, and pornography.

The Knights of Columbus has more than two million active contracts in force. That means that hundreds of thousands of brother Knights have elected to help protect their families and their futures with the Knights of Columbus.

Despite a rough economic climate, the Knights of Columbus has experienced 15 consecutive years of sales growth.

For 40 consecutive years, the Knights of Columbus has earned the highest possible rating for financial strength, currently: A++ (Superior) from ratings agency A.M. Best. Through conservative management, active fraternalism, and high-quality insurance products, the fraternal society has grown to a multi-billion dollar international insurance organization.

Family Fraternal Benefits

The Family Fraternal Benefits, which are described below, shall be available if: • the father is a member in good standing with his subordinate council, • he or his wife have at least one Knights of Columbus individual life insurance certificate in force on his or her life, and • payor death and disability rider can be requested, but no other riders, • such certificate requires an annual premium of at least $150 or provides at least $5,000 permanent life insurance coverage. (This life insurance certificate is referred to below as the "Qualifying Certificate") For purposes of eligibility for the Family Fraternal Benefits, a member in good standing is a member who has paid his current dues to his subordinate council, and whose membership is not suspended, forfeited or otherwise terminated for any reason and who is not an inactive insurance member. Qualifying Certificate Guidelines A. If the Qualifying Certificate is issued 30 days or more prior to the date of birth of a child of a member and his wife, and the child is born alive but dies before attaining the age of 61 days, a $1,500 Family Fraternal Benefit will be paid to the member. The claim for this $1,500 benefit must be received at the Supreme Office of the Knights of Columbus within three years of the date of the child's death. B. If an unborn child of a member and his wife dies 20 weeks or more after conception, and the Qualifying Certificate is issued 30 days or more prior to the date of miscarriage or the date of stillbirth, a $750 Family Fraternal Benefit shall be paid to the member. The claim for such benefit must be supported by medical evidence. No benefit will be paid if there is evidence that induced abortion terminated the pregnancy. The claim for this $750 benefit must be received at the Supreme Office of the Knights of Columbus within three years of the miscarriage or still birth. The Order affirms that life begins at conception. In this instance, the benefit requires a certified death certificate for the stillborn child, hence the 20 week rule. C. If the Qualifying Certificate is issued 30 days or more prior to the date of birth of a child of a member and his wife, then, regardless of the physical condition of the child, a $5,000 20-Year Payment Life plan will be issued on the child's life, provided that each of the newborn child's living brothers and sisters, who are under 18 and who have not been declined for Knights of Columbus insurance coverage, is the primary insured under a premium paying or fully paid up certificate issued by the Order. The member's application for this $5,000 20-Year Payment Life plan must be post-marked before the newborn child reaches the age of 61 days. This application must include the initial premium payment. When an application on a child under 61 days old is completed, and you believe that the child is uninsurable according to the usual underwriting practices of the Order, and the applicant wishes to request insurance under the Family Fraternal Benefit program, you should write the following under Remarks: "Application submitted under the Family Fraternal Benefit program. Insurance is not effective until the insured is 61 days old." The applicant must initial this statement. This certificate, which will be issued without evidence of insurability at the Order’s standard premium rate, will take effect when the newborn child is 61 days old. D. If a natural child of a member and his wife, or a member’s adopted child, or a member’s stepchild, who is older than 60 days and younger than age 18, is uninsurable according to the usual underwriting practices of the Knights of Columbus, the Order will, upon receipt of the member’s application and initial premium, issue a $5,000 20-Year Payment Life plan on the child’s life. This certificate will be issued without evidence of insurability at the Order’s Table P substandard premium rate. Payor Death and Disability rider can be applied for if requested on the application. This rider is dependent on the insurability of the payor. No other riders are allowed to be added. To be eligible for this 20-Year Payment Life certificate, the following requirements must be met: o The Qualifying Certificate must have been issued 60 days or more prior to the application for the certificate.

Page 14: Our Lady of Angels Catholic Churchuknight.org/Councils/Council 13044 New Knight Handbook 2017(1).pdf · Our Lady of Angels, Council 13044 Allen, TX Page 2 of 16 Welcome! It is our

o Each of the child's living brothers and sisters, who are under 18 and who have not been declined for insurance, must on the date of application be covered as the primary insured under a premium paying or fully paid up Knights of Columbus certificate for the past 60 days or more. o At least 90 days, but not more than 120 days, must have passed since the completion of the original declined application for insurance on the child's life. (This requirement can be waived with Medical Department approval). o The child who is insured under Benefit C is not eligible for this benefit. E. If the natural child of a member and his wife, or a member's adopted child, or a member's stepchild, who is between the ages of 3 years and 18 years, has an intellectual disability but otherwise in good health, the Order will, upon receipt of the member's application and initial premium payment, issue a 20-Year Payment Life plan for an amount up to $5,000 on the child's life at its standard premium rate. (This benefit replaces Resolution 149.) To be eligible for this 20-Year Payment Life plan, the following requirements must be met: o Each of the child's living brothers and sisters who are under 18 and who have not been declined for insurance must be covered as the primary insured under a premium paying or paid up Knights of Columbus Certificate. o The Qualifying Certificate must have been issued 60 days or more prior to the application for the certificate. o The total amount of Knights of Columbus insurance in force on the child's life, including the coverage provided under this 20-Year Payment Life plan, cannot exceed $5,000. If a child who is covered under Family Fraternal Benefit D meets all of the requirements for eligibility for Family Fraternal Benefit E, upon application, future premiums for such coverage will be reduced from Table P to standard. These Family Fraternal Benefits are made available by the Order effective August 1, 1994. Benefits A and B are provided at no cost, and Benefits C, D and E are offered on a contractual premium paying basis. The Family Fraternal Benefits may be amended or discontinued at any time by action of the Order's Board of Directors. Orphan Fraternal Benefit The Orphan Fraternal Benefit, which is described below, shall be available if: • the father is a member in good standing with his subordinate council, • he or his wife have at least one Knights of Columbus individual life insurance certificate in force on his or her life, and • such certificate requires an annual premium of at least $150 or provides at least $5,000 permanent life insurance coverage. (This life insurance certificate is referred to as the "Qualifying Certificate".) For purposes of eligibility for the Orphan Fraternal Benefit, a member in good standing is a member who has paid his current due to his subordinate council, and whose membership is not suspended, forfeited or otherwise terminated for any reason and who is not an inactive insurance member. The references below to "he" and "his" apply to both males and females. If a member's natural child, adopted child or stepchild (who resides with the member and/or his wife), who is the primary insured under a Knights of Columbus life insurance certificate, or has been declined for such coverage, becomes an orphan (i.e. has no living parent, stepparent or adoptive parent) at any time prior to his 19th birthday, he shall receive a payment of $80 per month, with the initial $80 payment being made on the first day of the month following the date on which the child becomes an orphan and subsequent payments being made on the first day of each month thereafter. Prior to his 18th birthday, payments shall be made to the orphan's legally appointed guardian for the orphan's benefit. If a child becomes an orphan prior to attaining the age of 61 days, the requirement that he be the primary insured under a Knights of Columbus life insurance certificate shall be waived. The claim for this $80 monthly benefit must be received at the Supreme Office of the Knights of Columbus within three years of the date the child becomes an orphan. This monthly benefit shall cease when the status of the

Knights of Columbus certificate insuring his life is no longer either premium paying or fully paid up, when he enters military service, when he graduates from high school, when he marries, or when he attains the age of 19; provided, however, that a single full time student who is receiving the monthly benefit prior to his 19th birthday can continue to receive such monthly benefit (while he remains in college or vocation/technical school) until his 23rd birthday. Benefits paid to a full time student cease when he is no longer attending school, unless the reason for leaving school is a disabling disease. In such event, benefits will continue until the orphan's 23rd birthday. Based on need, as determined by the financial aid office of his educational institution, an orphan is also eligible for a Knights of Columbus scholarship of up to $1,750 per year, not to exceed $7,000 over a four year period. The Orphan Fraternal Benefit is made available by the Order to those children who become orphans on or after August 1, 1994. The Orphan Fraternal Benefit may be amended or discontinued at any time by action of the Order's Board of Directors. The Order has the sole right to define and determine the eligible orphan. Any interpretation of the definition made by the Order is final. Member/Spouse Fraternal Benefit The Member/Spouse Fraternal Benefit, which is described below, is provided for all members in good standing and their wives. For purposes of eligibility for this benefit, a member in good standing is a member: • who has paid his current dues to his subordinate council, • whose membership is not suspended, forfeited or otherwise terminated for any reason, who is not an inactive insurance member, and • who belongs to a council of and resides in the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, the Northern Mariana Islands or Guam. This benefit is provided those members of councils that have paid their current per capita tax and Catholic Advertising Fund assessments to the Supreme Council and are not otherwise suspended. For this purpose a council is deemed current if its per capita tax and Catholic Advertising Fund assessments are not in arrears for more than two years. A council that is paying its arrearages on an agreed-to settlement plan providing for a two-year amortization and paying current charges shall also be deemed current. An accidental death benefit will be paid to the next of kin in accordance with Section 71.2 of the Order's laws: • If a member or his wife dies as a result of injuries sustained in an accident, provided that death occurs within 90 days of such accident. • The claim for this accidental death benefit must be received at the Supreme Office of the Knights of Columbus within three years of the date of death. • This accidental death benefit will not be paid if death results from: suicide; self-inflicted injury while sane or insane; sickness or disease (except bacterial infection resulting from accidental cut or wound); war or act of war (declared or undeclared); flying, except as a fare-paying passenger on a regularly scheduled airline; and injury from driving or riding in a speed or organized contest. The Member/Spouse Fraternal Benefit is made available by the Order for accidental deaths occurring on or after September 1, 1994. The Member/Spouse Fraternal Benefit may be amended or discontinued at any time by action of the Order's Board of Directors. Years of Continuous Membership Benefit If death results prior to age 65, this benefit payable is based on the member's years of continuous membership in good standing. Less than two years $1,000 Two years, but less than three $1,500 Three years, but less than four $2,000 Four years or more $2,500 The benefit amount will be reduced by $500 on the member's 65th birthday and each subsequent birthday, until the benefit amount is stabilized at $1,000. The $1,000 coverage will continue thereafter, provided the member and the member's council are in good standing and both so reflected on the records of the Supreme Council.

The spouse benefit at all times corresponds to the member's benefit. At no time will the spouse benefit exceed the member's benefit. Should the member predecease his wife, she shall continue to be covered thereafter at a fixed benefit of $1,000, provided this benefit remains in effect. Should the spouse and the member die within 90 days from the same accident, however, the scheduled benefit will be paid. Medical Withdrawal Option A Medical Withdrawal Option (MWO) is available on all Flexible Premium Annuity certificates having an account value of at least $5,000, other than (1) Locked-in RRSP certificates, and (2) pre-1981 certificates with no surrender charge provision. Upon approval of a MWO claimant’s statement, the Order will waive all applicable surrender charges associated with a request for surrender benefits. This Option allows the owner to withdraw all or part of the Accumulation Value of his annuity contract without incurring any Surrender Charge, provided that: 1. The Annuitant has a medical condition that is expected to result in death within twelve months, or 2. The Annuitant undergoes a major organ transplant, suffers major burns, or is diagnosed as having life-threatening cancer, heart attack, unstable angina, stroke, end-stage kidney disease, paralysis or coma, or 3. The Annuitant is confined in a licensed skilled nursing facility for at least sixty consecutive days This Option is available only if the medical condition commences after the later of (1) February 1, 2006 and (2) the Issue Date of the annuity contract, and if the Annuitant notifies the Knights of Columbus within twelve months of the date of diagnosis of the medical condition. Also, this Option applies only to annuity premium paid prior to the date of diagnosis of the medical condition. In order to be eligible for waiver of Surrender Charges under this Option, the medical condition must be verified by a MWO Attending Physician’s Statement. Please note that any waiver of Knights of Columbus Surrender Charge will have no affect on any tax reporting, tax withholding or tax penalty that may be imposed by the U.S. or Canadian government. There are a number of additional restrictions and conditions that apply to this Option. These restrictions and conditions are set forth in the Rules of the Board of Directors pertaining to the Administration of the Insurance Systems. These restrictions and conditions will be provided upon written request. This Waiver of Annuity Surrender Charges under the Medical Withdrawal Option may be amended or discontinued at any time by action of the Board of Directors. Federal Estate Tax Benefit A Federal Estate Tax Benefit shall be added to Knights of Columbus certificates which are assigned to Knights of Columbus Charities, Inc. Under the terms of this Federal Estate Tax Benefit, if (1) a certificate is assigned to Knights of Columbus Charities, Inc. and (2) the Insured dies within three years after the transfer of ownership of this certificate to Knights of Columbus Charities, Inc., and (3) a Federal Estate Tax is payable as a result of the Insured’s death, and (4) the Knights of Columbus agrees that the amount of such Federal Estate Tax payment is larger than it would have been, had this certificate not been issued, then the Knights of Columbus will reimburse the person who makes this Federal Estate Tax payment for that portion of the tax payment that is directly attributable to the issuance of this certificate. Such reimbursement of Federal Estate Tax payment shall be in addition to payment of the proceeds due under the terms of the certificate. This Federal Estate Tax Benefit may be amended or discontinued at any time by action of the Board of Directors.
