Page 1 Our Lady Help of Christians 106

Dear Friends: Greetings and Welcome! Happy New Year! We continue to celebrate the blessed season of Christmas! It was certainly a wonderful time here again at our parish. I continue to be grateful to all who participated in our Christmas Celebrations and to all who supported our parish again this Christmas. You can see the wonderful response to our Christmas collection reported in this bulletin. Thank you one and all! I was happy to see so many visitors to our parish at Christmas. All are welcome! This weekend we celebrate the beautiful feast, Solemnity of the Epiphany. It celebrates the manifestation of Jesus to the nations. The three wise men, Magi, represent the nations. As we will pray in our responsorial psalm: “Lord, every nation on earth will adore You!” Throughout the Christmas Season we hear about the gift that God has given us, the gift of Jesus, Emmanuel, God with us. This gift is Jesus, the Word made flesh. Today, our Feast of the Epiphany, is the so called “public announcement” of this gift of salvation. As we continue our celebration of this Eucharist, we pray for the grace to have the open-heartedness of the Magi, our “three Wise Men,” in this coming New Year. All we have is a gift from God. Let us not let the blessedness and joy of this beautiful Christmas Season leave us as we continue in the New Year. We are grateful for God’s continued love manifested in the birth of the Savior, in the Eucharist we share here at this Holy Altar, and in each other, our faith is so important, every day. Again my thanks for all you do here at OLHC, your presence, support, participation and assistance in our various programs and activities, you are a blessing for me. Thank you! Happy New Year! Fr. Janton...

TODAYS READINGS First Reading: Isaiah 60:1-6 Second Reading: Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6 Gospel: Matthew 2:1-12 Light. Without it we would not be able to see. It is no accident that in the beginning the first thing God created was light. And it was good. One special property of light is that it is not diminished by the number of people using it. No matter how many people are already outside on a sunny day, there is no less sunlight for the next person on the scene. Whether the light is from the sun, from a star, from God, or from Christ, it is available to all and diminished by none. Isaiah speaks of the light shining forth from Jerusalem after the Chosen People returned from exile. It guided them back home, but it was also a beacon for people beyond the sea or across the desert. They were invited to witness the glory of God as well. Similarly, the star over Bethlehem was not only visible to the people of Judah. It led the magi as they journeyed from their home in the east (probably Persia). Not everyone accepted the light (Herod), but it shone forth for all. The light of Christ continues to be revealed all over the world, just as it was during Paul’s time. We are all members of the same body, equally illuminated by the light and promise of Christ. How can you and your community be welcoming to all who are drawn to the light of Christ? DECEMBER 22ND STEWARDSHIP REPORT Sunday Collection: $11,154.00 Thank You! Envelopes: 225 Candles: $117.00

CHRISTMAS COLLECTION $31,185.00 Thank You!

on file in their parish in order to coach.

DEACONS CORNER The Annunciation to Mary is one of the more inspirational accounts in the New Testament. The angel appears to Mary and tells her she will conceive a child who will be great and called Son of the Most High, after which she responds in wonder how this could be since she has no relations with a man. The angel reminds her that this will be accomplished through the power of the Holy Spirit and he reminds Mary that her relative Elizabeth who was considered barren has now conceived a child herself. The final line is what ultimately describes the power of God’s miracles when the angel says “nothing will be impossible for God.” This is not just some idle promise. We see throughout salvation history where God has done what appears to be the impossible. As far back as Genesis, He promises Sarah that despite her old age she would bear a son. And parting the Red Sea so the Israelites would be able to flee from the Egyptians would appear to be quite an impossible feat. If we look at these miracles from a totally human perspective, they are impossible. But the impossible becomes possible once we come to accept His plan. When the Word of God is accepted by us, something new happens, thanks to the power of the Holy Spirit, something new and surprising, such as a son born of a virgin or born to a woman of advanced age. God is omnipotent. He is unlimited in what He can do. So we need to take care not to limit God. What are the seemingly impossible things in our life? Is it dealing with a loved one caught up in addiction, or a serious health problem, or dealing with an estranged family member? We look at these situations and feel lost and hopeless. No matter how frightening our personal impossibilities appear to us, remember that He is an all-powerful God who loves us and is willing to intervene mightily on our behalf. If you have a question about your faith or on Church teachings, please submit your question to Deacon John Nucero at [email protected]. Thank you.
