FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents and Parishioners, Welcome back to the final term of the school year, where preparations for Saturday’s Foodie Festival are in full flight. Thanks to the work of Sharon Cheevers, her dedicated team, and all the wonderful families in our school, this year’s Foodie Festival will continue to build the spirit amongst our community while bringing in countless curious and excited visitors. You might be surprised that the Newsletter is already one paragraph in and no mention has been made of the Grand Final. Well, I did manage to celebrate the Tigers’ win while at the Dead Sea, although this would not have been the same as being enveloped by the euphoric atmosphere at the MCG. Upon my return home, I managed to read Chip LeGrand’s article in last Monday’s Age entitled ‘Grander plans for Tigers’. Interestingly, I drew a lot of parallels between the developing and emerging culture at Tigerland and what we are striving for at OHR. Richmond’s chief executive, Brendon Gale, states, “We exist for a deeper purpose. It is about connecting: connecting with each other and our culture, and connecting externally. We believe our club has a role to play in connecting with community, in strengthening and unifying community, in creating social value.” Our school does not exist solely as an educational facility on an island. We exist to build the relational quality between all stakeholders. It is about developing relationships between teachers and students, between staff and parents, in the interactions between parents and parents, through the cooperation between the school and parish, and the interactions between the school and the community beyond our gates. Bachar Houli, a Muslim footballer, is clear-eyed about the culture behind Richmond’s success, “Yes, we have got a great system on-field but our system off-field is far greater … this club is not just about success on-field. It is about building opportunities for everyone.” Isn’t that what we are on about at OHR? The Foodie Festival in on our Doorstep! Following countless months of preparation by Sharon and all the members of the organising committee, the Foodie Festival is now only two days away. This team of committed volunteers has dedicated an inordinate amount of their time into the planning and organisation of this event to ensure that it is a success. However, the success of the event is dependent upon the coordinated set up, which begins tomorrow, the orchestration of the actual Festival on Saturday, and the ensuing pack up and clean up. The Foodie Festival is an event genuinely designed to bring all members of our community together and communicates to the children the way we value our school. We are extremely grateful to our generous sponsors who have supported the Festival this year. If ever using any of the sponsors, please indicate that you are from OHR and that way they will know that the members of the school community are returning the favour. The children are so excited about Saturday’s Foodie Festival and, in recent months, have literally been counting down the days. The day proves to be one of the biggest highlights on the school calendar for them. Once again, there is a great buzz throughout the broader local community and I have no doubt that the Festival will draw in an amazing number of visitors. In addition to generating important revenue to support the school, the Festival is proving to be an integral form of marketing for OHR. Put simply, our school is on display! Thank you to everyone who has put up their hand to assist in whatever way. If you have yet to volunteer some time, it is still not too late, and your time will be genuinely appreciated. Only one More Week to the OHR Art Show The OHR Art Show is a family affair, where wonderful examples of student artwork is on display for your appreciation. We strongly encourage families to move about the displays together. When Official Opening Evening is on Thursday 17 October

Time 7.00 – 9.00pm Who Celebrated children’s author and illustrator, Leigh Hobbs, will be officially opening the Art Show. Leigh will also take the opportunity to launch his latest book. Where Artworks will be on display in a number of key areas, including: the Hall; Performing Arts Room; Year 5/6 learning area; and the Undercroft. What else is on? A number of spectacular hampers can be won on the night. Raffle tickets will be on sale during the evening. $2 per ticket or 3 tickets for $5. What is the Staff Wonder Wall? Some Staff members have completed an artwork. Can you match the artist with their creation? Hampers to be won for the family with the highest number of correct guesses. Gold coin donation for each entry form. What else? If any parents cannot make it to the Art Show on Thursday evening, the artworks will be open for viewing all day next Friday and then for one hour following next Sunday morning’s Mass.

Before and After Care Next Week Due to the fact that the Undercroft will serve as a significant space for our Art Show, both Before School Care and After School Care will operate from the Learning Resource Centre (Library) Wednesday 16 October, Thursday 17 October and Friday 18 October. Entry will be from the external doors near the sandpit. Entry to the Junior Classrooms and 5/6 Classrooms From Thursday 17 October – Friday 18 October entry to the Prep, Year 1/2 and Year 5/6 classrooms will be from the west door nearest the church. Simply follow the path all the way down the west side of the Year 1/2 classrooms and turn left. Sincere Sympathy On behalf of the OHR staff I would like to express our deepest condolences to Mandy Brown on the passing of her mother, who was also grandmother to Nicholas D and mother-in-law to John D. May she rest in peace. Chess State Final The following girls have qualified to represent OHR in the Girls State Chess Final this Monday: Stella B, Lucia C, Josephine C, Raja R and Brenda S We are very proud of the girls for having advanced to this high level of competition and wish them well. Thank you to Mrs Leone Gole for providing these great opportunities for our students. Working Bee The final Working Bee was originally scheduled for Sunday 20 October. One of the main tasks included cleaning out the Dungeon following the Foodie Festival. However, due to the fact that the Art Show pieces will still be on display in the Undercroft it will prove too problematic to bring up all the rubbish from the Dungeon. Therefore, the Working Bee will be postponed until Sunday 10 November.

We would appreciate as many hands as possible to help out on this day. Hooptime Basketball Wishing our Junior Future Stars – The Rams – all the best as they progress through today’s Regional Finals. The team comprises: Zac C, Daniel C, Matilda D, Lizzie H, Harrison M, Isabelle M, Maddie S, Alexia SA and Max W. Division Athletics As a result of their amazing success during last term’s North Balwyn District Athletics Carnival, the following students represented OHR in yesterday’s Division Athletics: Juliette C, Alex H, Lola P, Ava P, Ned LM and Max W Congratulations to Ava who now advances to the next level of competition.

Holiday Maintenance Over the school holidays the following maintenance tasks were performed:

Split-system reverse cycle air conditioners were installed in the Year 1/2 classrooms. Last summer these classrooms became extremely hot over a number of successive days when the temperatures were consistently in the high 30’s. As these classrooms are composed of a triple brick structure they have had a tendency to retain the heat, therefore, rendering the evaporative cooling almost useless.

The Norfolk Pine shading the sand pit was pruned in accordance with the recommendations in an arborist’s report.

School grounds were entirely cleared and cleaned. Remember that tomorrow is a School Closure Day for Staff Professional Learning. Wishing you a great weekend, Frank Dame

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke On the way to Jerusalem Jesus travelled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. As he entered

one of the villages, ten lepers came to meet him. They stood some way off and called to him, ‘Jesus!

Master! Take pity on us.’ When he saw them he said, ‘Go and show yourselves to the priests.’ Now as they were going away they were cleansed. Finding himself

cured, one of them turned back praising God at the top of his voice and threw himself at the feet of Jesus

and thanked him. The man was a Samaritan. This made Jesus say, ‘Were not all ten made clean? The other nine, where are they? It seems that no one has

come back to give praise to God, except this foreigner.’ And he said to the man, ‘Stand up and go on your way. Your faith has saved you.’

The Gospel of the Lord

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 1. In today’s gospel, what did the sick men do when they saw Jesus?

2. How did Jesus respond to them? 3. What did one of the healed people do when he discovered he was well?

4. What are the times when we call on Jesus for help? 5. How can we thank Jesus for all he has done for us?

GARDENING CLUB

AND SUSTAINABILITY

NEWS Over the school holidays a band of worker bees gave up 2 hours of their time to add compost, turn over our garden bed and prepare some areas for our Spring planting this term. Big thanks to Bridget and Paula N, Yori and Kerry K and Ava L for all your hard work. At the Foodie Festival this Saturday our Gardening Green Thumbs, and budding entrepreneurs, will be holding a stall next to the OHR veggie patch selling tomato seedlings, lemons, herb bunches and maybe even some cups of ice cold homemade lemon cordial. Please come along and support their initiative and say hello.

TEESHY’S ROCKSHOW… “It’s an all-ages gig, so it’s a great chance to get the kids along to see a real band at a real venue. You probably haven’t heard of Even, but if the world was a fairer place you would have. They have been going for 25 years and they are still releasing some pretty amazing stuff. If you watched the Grand Final, watch Rockwiz, or are going to see Paul Kelly live, then you will have seen Ash Naylor on guitar. Ash is the lead singer and guitarist and he goes alright. Check them out on Spotify. “
