    Polandofficially the Republic of Poland

    Is a

    country in Central Europe bordered by

    Germany to the west; the Czech Republic

    and Slovakia to the south; the Ukraine,

    Belarus, Lithuania to the east; and the

    Baltic Sea and Kaliningrad Oblast,

    a Russian exclave, to the north.

    It is the 69th

    largest country in the worldand the 9th largest in Europe. Poland has a

    population of over 38 million people.

    Warsaw is located on the Vistula River roughly 260 kilometres(160 mi) from the Baltic Sea and 300 kilometres (190 mi) fromthe Carpathian Mountains.

    The Grand Theatre is a theatre complex and opera company located on historic Theatre Square in Warsaw. It was built between 1825 and 1833, designed by the Italianarchitect Antonio Corazzi, to provide a new performance venue forexisting opera, ballet and drama companies active in Warsaw.

    A historic cemetery located in the Wola district, western partof Warsaw.It is the most famous cemetery in the city, and one of the

    oldest. Found here are the graves of many individuals from Polishhistory. The Powzki Cemetery was established on 4 November 1790.Like many of the old European cemeteries, Powzki's tombstones werecreated by some of the most renowned sculptors of the age, Polish andforeign. Some of the monuments are excellent examples of variousstyles in art and architecture.

    The Royal Baths ParkIt was designed in the 17th century by Tylman vanGameren, in the baroque style. It took thename azienki ("Baths") from a bathing pavilion that waslocated there.Its principal buildings stand beside or near the azienki

    Lake and azienki River. The kingspalace is situated onthe lake and hence is known as the "Palace on the Water."Most of the buildings in the park suffered severe firedamage during and after the 1944 Warsaw Uprising.Reconstruction of the park and palaces was completedwithin a few years after World War II.

    Warsaw's Old Town is the oldest historic

    district of the city. It is one of Warsaw'smost prominent tourist attractions.The heart of the area is the Old Town Market

    Place, with its restaurants, cafs and shops.

    Surrounding streets feature medievalarchitecture such as the city walls, theBarbican and St. John's Cathedral and theRoyal Castle.

    CracowSecond largest and one of

    the oldest cities in Poland .Situated on the VistulaRiver. The city dates back tothe 7th century.Krakw has traditionally

    been one of the leadingcentres of Polish academic,cultural, and artistic life.It was the capital of Polandfrom 1038 to 1596.

    The Gothic Wawel Castle was built at the behestof Casimir III the Great and consists of a number of structures situated around the central courtyard. Inthe 14th century it was rebuilt by Jogaila and Jadwigaof Poland.

    Other structures were developed on the hill during

    that time as well, in order to serve as quarters for thenumerous clergy, royal clerks and craftsmen.

    The Auschwitz-

    Birkenau StateMuseum A town in the Lesser Poland. Province of southern Poland,

    situated 50 kilometres (31 mi) to the west of Krakw.The preserved, authentic Memorial consists of two parts of theformer concentration camp: Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II- Birkenau.From the spring of 1942 Auschwitz became the largest site for themurder of Jews brought here under the Nazi plan for theirextermination.More than 1,100,000 men, women, and children lost their lives here.

    Gdask A city on the Baltic coast, at the

    centre of the country's fourth-largest metropolitan area.The city lies on the southernedge of Gdask Bay (of the BalticSea), in a conurbation with thecity of Gdynia, spa

    town of Sopot, and suburbancommunities, which togetherform a metropolitan area calledthe Tricity.The city was the birthplace of the Solidarity movement which,

    under the leadership of politicalactivist Lech Wasa, played amajor role in bringing an endto Communist rule across CentralEurope.

    WesterplatteWesterplatte is the peninsula in Gdask,

    located on the Baltic Sea coast. From 1926to 1939 it was the location of a Polish MilitaryTransit Depot, sanctioned within the territoryof the Free City of Danzig (now Gdask) .

    It is famous for the Battle of Westerplatte, which

    was the first clash between Polish andGerman forces during the Invasion of Polandand thus the first battle of the Europeantheater of World War II.
