Our experiment

Sugar in CokeWith our measurement we want to show howmuch sugar a tin of coke (0,33l) contains. For thiswe use a device called DMA35, a practical andportable measuring instrument designed byAnton Paar. First we have to remove the carbonacid from the drink by simply shaking it. Theliquid is then transported – with the help of apump – into the U-pipe of the measuringinstrument. The density will be measured and theamount of sugar automatically calculated. Thehigher the density of the sample the higher theamount of sugar in it.

DensityDensity is defined as mass divided by the volumeof a body, in our case the liquid to be examined.

ρ=mV

If the volume is known, the density can becalculated with the mass.

PrincipleThe instrument has a U-pipe installed. As soon asthe liquid gets into the U-pipe it is set intovibration. The frequency of this vibration is thenmeasured and the density and the amount ofsugar in the liquid calculated. The higher thefrequency the lower the density and the amountof sugar of the sample.
