Our drinking water catchments traverse the suburbs of Perth, jarrah and marri forests, banksia woodlands, pine plantations, and rural areas. Surface or groundwater collects in streams, wetlands, reservoirs or groundwater aquifers. As water drains through the catchment it can pick up bacteria and other microbes, soil, litter and chemicals, such as spilled fuel. By protecting our drinking water catchments from these pollutants we will ensure the availability of safe, clean drinking water. You can help to keep our drinking water safe and protect wildlife habitat by taking care in the catchments: • To protect public health, you may only swim, canoe, marron and fish outside our drinking water catchments. These activities can introduce bacteria and other microbes into catchments when people have contact with the water. This can put our drinking water at risk because sometimes microbes may survive disinfection. Brunswick Catchment is a developed catchment with a history of recreational trout fishing and marroning. In this catchment, conditional marroning and lure and fly fishing is allowed outside the reservoir protection zone (a Department of Fisheries licence is required). Similarly, Bickley Brook Catchment is a developed catchment where canoeing is allowed only at the Bickley Outdoor Recreation Camp. This activity is managed via a formal agreement with the Department of Sport and Recreation. • Respect the protection zones. Near a drinking water reservoir the risk of bacteria and other microbes, chemicals or soil particles entering the water is too high to allow public access. The proposed Mundaring Weir reservoir protection zone (RPZ) is an exception as there are already some existing walk tracks, including the Bibbulmun Track and the Golden Pipeline Heritage Trail. Similarly, the Munda Biddi and Carinyah bike trails are within the Canning River RPZ. The use of these walk tracks and cycle trails is allowed but please follow the guidance signs and stay on the path. The reservoir protection zones are clearly signposted and scenic lookouts, picnic areas, walk tracks and cycle trails are located outside these zones (with the exception of the existing walk tracks and cycle trails in the Canning River RPZ and proposed Mundaring RPZ). • Stay on existing roads and tracks and help to prevent soil erosion and damage to wildlife habitat. Off-road driving or cycling can damage vegetation and loosen soil on tracks. Soil can then be washed into streams with the next rains. This can put our drinking water at risk because soil particles floating in the water can reduce the effectiveness of the disinfectant used to kill bacteria and other microbes in drinking water. • Camp only at designated camp sites. These are usually signposted in National Parks, local parks, State forest or bush areas. When you have found your spot, camp in existing cleared areas and use the toilet facilities provided to safeguard the environment. • Leave only footprints. Take your rubbish out with you or use the bins provided. • Signs in the catchment will show where pets are not allowed. Pets can introduce bacteria and other microbes to our drinking water catchments and harm our wildlife. If you are not sure whether dogs and/or other pets are allowed at the place you intend to visit, please leave them at home. Pets are allowed at Lane Poole Reserve, Whittaker’s Mill, Oakley Dam, Scarp Pool, Goldmine Hill, Binningup Beach and Wright’s Bridge. Recreation activities are managed carefully in future drinking water catchments to leave the options open for using them as drinking water sources. These include: Karnup-Dandalup, Jane Brook, Gooralong Brook, Dirk Brook and Harvey and Wellington reservoirs. Harvey reservoir is currently used for irrigation so some types of recreation like picnics, swimming, canoeing, sailing, fishing and marroning, are welcomed. Wellington reservoir is also a potential drinking water source that is currently used for irrigation and industry. The reservoir is a focal point of the new Wellington National Park and has a history of recreational use. Appropriate recreation activities for the dam are being identified as part of the draft management plan for the National Park. Advice and input is being sought from a community advisory committee and the local community. The environment of the region is made up of natural communities including forests and woodlands, wildflowers, granite outcrops, rivers, beaches, estuaries and internationally important wetlands for migratory birds. Walk tracks and off-road cycle trails wind through these landscapes to give walkers and cyclists many opportunities to experience some of the beauty and diversity of the south-west's unique natural environment. The Bibbulmun Track and Munda Biddi Cycle Trail, two of the longest walk tracks and cycle trails in Australia, traverse many of our drinking water catchments. At Pinjarra: • the Heritage Walk Trail along the Murray River is embedded with tiles explaining the Aboriginal, pioneer and forest heritage of the area; and • railway markets are held monthly at the railway station. Near Dwellingup: • swim, canoe or rubber raft on the Murray River, catch marron or trout in season or relax in forest surroundings at Lane Poole Reserve, Scarp Pool and Oakley Dam. • South Dandalup Dam has an attractive picnic area with a walking track and lookout point. • The Forest Heritage Centre incorporates the Fine Wood Gallery, a tree top boardwalk, forest displays and activities. Harvey lies in the heart of dairy country with inland forests, and beaches at Binningup and Myalup. Popular attractions include scenic picnic spots at Stirling and Harvey Dams, Lake Brockman (Logue Brook Dam), wineries and the local cheese factory. See the inset map of recreation facilities at Harvey Dam. Lake Brockman (Logue Brook Dam) is a popular place for swimming, fishing, canoeing, camping and water skiing. Stirling’s Cottage and Heritage Gardens is a replica of the 1880’s home of popular author May Gibbs who created Snugglepot and Cuddlepie. View Waroona’s ‘forest’ of carved and painted heritage bush poles and visit its art and craft galleries and Vision Splendid Gardens. Lake Navarino (Waroona Dam) and Lake Moyanup (Drakebrook Weir) are favourite places for picnics, fishing, canoeing, swimming and bushwalking. You can also camp and water ski at Lake Navarino. Towards the coast, Yalgorup National Park contains eleven coastal wetlands and stands of tuart trees and banksias. Lake Clifton contains a colony of living wonder fossils known as thrombolites and a walkway across the lake’s shallows allows close-up viewing. Preston Beach at the Park’s southern end is popular for swimming, beach fishing and four wheel driving. The heart of Western Australia’s coal industry, beautiful and historic Collie has scenic drives through native forests. Experienced white water rafters can ride the river’s rapids (difficulty level III to IV) downstream to Honeymoon Pool camp site, where possums and bandicoots reside. The waterways offer activities including swimming, canoeing and fishing at Glen Mervyn Dam, Minninup Pool, Honeymoon Pool, Long Pool, Little Rock, Big Rock and Rapids. Wellington and Harris Dams are great places for picnics. You can also try water skiing at Glen Mervyn Dam and Stockton Lake. In town, the Collie River Walk takes visitors past many of Collie's attractions. Visit the Coalfields Museum and replica underground coalmine. Whether you are interested in history, culture, arts and crafts, scenic landscapes, wineries, great food or accommodation, this region has something to offer everyone. At Balingup, Greenbushes and Boyup Brook, discover locally handcrafted pottery, jewellery, sculptures and herbal products. The bakeries and cafes will tempt you to try the local produce, including Balingup’s award winning fruit wines. The colourful Medieval Carnival and Tulip Festival at Balingup are two special events held during August each year. The Blackwood River is well known for its canoeing, swimming and fishing spots, including popular Wright’s Bridge where you will find facilities for camping, caravans, swimming, barbecues and picnics. The local visitor centres can provide information about scenic drives, walk tracks and cycle trails. The many diverse and scenic environments for swimming, canoeing and picnics include: • John Forrest National Park; • Lake Leschenaultia*; • Swan Estuary Marine Park; • Canning River Regional Park; • Murray River (Ravenswood, Pinjarra, Dwellingup, Lane Poole Reserve*, Scarp Pool and Oakley Dam); • Serpentine River (Serpentine National Park); • Peel Inlet and Harvey Estuary (camping at Herron Point*); • Leschenault Estuary (Leschenault Peninsula Conservation Park*); • Lake Moyanup (Drakesbrook Weir); • Lake Navarino (Waroona Dam*); • Hotham River (Lions Weir and Crossman Bridge near Boddington); • Lake Brockman (Logue Brook Dam*); • Glen Mervyn Dam; • Collie River (Eaton foreshore, Honeymoon Pool* and the scenic drive along Lennard Road); • Preston River (Donnybrook); and • Blackwood River (Wright’s Bridge*, Balingup, Greenbushes and Boyup Brook). Many of these places have camp sites (indicated with a *) and great fishing and marroning spots (Department of Fisheries recreational fishing licence required). Water skiing (in season) is a popular pastime at Lake Navarino, Lake Brockman, Glen Mervyn Dam and Stockton Lake. There are other great canoeing, bush walking, picnicking and camping spots within one hour’s drive north of Perth (outside the area covered by this map). These include Bells Rapids, Walyunga National Park (via Great Northern Highway) and Avon Valley National Park (via Toodyay Road). Along the coast are sheltered bays and beaches for swimming, snorkelling, scuba diving, beach fishing and picnics (see the reverse side of the map for more information). The Perth Hills and foothills have many walk and cycle trails through the jarrah forest. At Lake Leschenaultia enjoy Devonshire teas, swimming, canoeing or camping. There are scenic picnic areas at John Forrest and Lesmurdie Falls National Parks, Sullivan’s Rock, along Mundaring Weir Road and at the drinking water reservoirs of Mundaring Weir, Bickley Brook, Churchman Brook, Victoria, Wungong Brook and Canning River (below the dam wall). See the inset maps of Wungong Brook, Churchman Brook and Mundaring Weir reservoirs. The Hills Forest Discovery Centre is a focal point for CALM’s Nearer to Nature activities program. Visit historic towns and attractive picnic areas including Serpentine Dam, Serpentine Pipehead Dam, Serpentine National Park, Gooralong and Langford Parks. Walk and cycle trail maps and walk calendars are available in local stores and at the Shire office and library in Mundijong. Guided wildflower and heritage walks are conducted every few weeks between March and November. At Jarrahdale, visit the Millbrook Winery and the country markets, held on the fourth Sunday of each month. Tumbulgum Farm in Mundijong gives visitors a taste of Australian farm life. There are other great canoeing, bush walking, picnicking andcamping spots within one hour’s drive north of Perth (outsidethe area covered by this map). These include Bells Rapids,Walyunga National Park (via Great Northern Highway) and AvonValley National Park (via Toodyay Road).
Along the coast are sheltered bays and beaches for swimming,snorkelling, scuba diving, beach fishing and picnics (see thereverse side of the map for more information).
The Perth Hills and foothills have many walk and cycletrails through the jarrah forest. At Lake Leschenaultiaenjoy Devonshire teas, swimming, canoeing orcamping.
There are scenic picnic areasat John Forrest andLesmurdie Falls NationalParks, Sullivan’s Rock, alongMundaring Weir Road and atthe drinking water reservoirsof Mundaring Weir, BickleyBrook, Churchman Brook,Victoria, Wungong Brookand Canning River (belowthe dam wall). The Hills Forest Discovery Centre is a focal point forCALM’s Nearer to Nature activities program.
Visit historic towns and attractive picnic areas includingSerpentine Dam, Serpentine Pipehead Dam, SerpentineNational Park, Gooralong and Langford Parks. Walk andcycle trail maps and walk calendars are available in localstores and at the Shire office and library in Mundijong. Guided wildflower and heritage walks are conductedevery few weeks between March and November.
At Jarrahdale, visit theMillbrook Winery andthe country markets,held on the fourthSunday of each month.Tumbulgum Farm inMundijong givesvisitors a taste ofAustralian farm life.

DIEBACK QUARANTINE AREASDieback is a plant disease caused by the soilborne fungus Phytophtora, which is spreadmainly on wheels and underbodies of vehicles.It kills plants by rotting their roots and preventingwater uptake giving the appearance of dyingof drought. The disease attacks at least 900plant species - jarrah, banksia and blackboybeing the most obvious - and others includingmuch of the coastal heath. Diebach QuarantineAreas are known to be mostly free of dieback.You can reduce the spread of the disease bykeeping to well formed, well drained roads andobeying the ‘Road Closed’ signs.

Drinking Water CatchmentsProtecting our catchments is an important way to ensure the water we receive in ourhomes is safe to drink.
• When walking, cycling or driving stay on existing roads and tracks to help preventsoil erosion and damage to wildlife habitat. Avoid walking or cycling in streams where possible.
W h• Camp only at designated camp sites.
g• Only swim, canoe, marron, fish and use vehicles off-road (including off-road
motorcycles) outside our drinking water catchments.
• Signs in the catchment area will show where pets are not allowed.
• Leave only footprints. Take your rubbish out with you or use the bins provided.
• Enjoy scenic views of the reservoirs from dedicated lookout sites on majortourist roads.

Future Drinking Water CatchmentsRecreation activities are managed carefully in future drinking water catchments to leavethe options open for using them as drinking water sources. Check in the local area forrecreation activities that are allowed.
Recreation opportunities at Harvey Dam include fishing, canoeing and snare-only marroning(see the recreation and facilities guide for details).
Reservoir Protection Zone (RPZ)Entry to RPZs is usually not allowed as the risk of bacteria and other microbes or chemicalsentering the water is too high to allow people to enter.
The proposed Mundaring Weir RPZ is an exception as there are already some existingwalk tracks including the Bibbulmun Track and Golden Pipeline Heritage Trail. Similarly,the Munda Biddi and Carinyah bike trails are within the Canning River RPZ. The use ofthese walk tracks and cycle trails is allowed but please follow the guidance signs and stayon the path.
You will see the RPZ clearly signposted, for example:
Due to the importance of the RPZ there are penalties for people who ignore the restrictions.Fines up to $200 apply to people caught carrying out unauthorised activities within theRPZ.
Beyond Drinking Water Catchments
Picnic areas, toilets and other facilities may be provided below the dam walls of our drinkingwater reservoirs. These facilities are located downstream from the reservoir, outside thecatchments.
