Our Dear Audience,

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is about a group of misfits putting themselves out there at great personal risk. They’re not like everyone else. They are spellers. That’s who they are to their cores. Not everyone shares their passion, so it is with extraordinary courage, commitment, and character that they remain true to their identities. Along the way, they find others who get them – because, although they are each quite unique, they are just the same. They develop connections with their fellow dwellers on the Island of Misfit Toys. And even though they compete to reach their fullest potentials, they develop friendships along the way.

That’s us. That’s R2P. Swap “spelling” with “musical theatre” in the above paragraph, and you get a pretty good sense of what we’re all about. We work to create an environment where anyone can find a place to be themselves and where they belong.

Like every nonprofit, the quest for financial sustainability is ongoing. In order to ensure that we can continue to keep our promises to the young people plan to serve in the coming season, we’re extending an invitation to you, your family and friends, and the rest of our community to join us by providing the support we’ll need to carry out our mission.

We’ve partnered with the local business GiveGab for a month-long crowdfunding campaign that we call “With Community and Jazz Hands for All!” Making a gift of any size is secure, fast, and easy (and there are great thank-you gifts, too). You can support the campaign generally or make a gift in honor of a specific company member who has taken up the mantle as a “Champion” with a personal fundraising goal.

Get all the info at www.runningtoplaces.org or go to our campaign page at bit.ly/jazzhands2017.

We are so grateful to be part of a community that believes in its young people’s potential to do amazing things and to become the fullest, best versions of themselves possible. It is our honor to be a part of that journey, and we’re glad to have you here, too.

On behalf of the entire Running to Places family, thank you – and enjoy the show!

Joey Steinhagen, R2P Founder and Artistic Director

RUNNING TO PLACES BOARD OF DIRECTORS Deborah Drew, Dick Furnas, Heidi Goldstein, Jim Drew, Kati Torello, Lilly Westbrook, Linda Harris. Ex Officio: Jack Goldstein, Jerry Dietz

SPECIAL THANKS The staff and board of the Kitchen Theatre Company, M. Bevin O’Gara, Stephen Nunley, Jen Heath, Evie Hammer-Lester, Rachel Lampert & David Squires, Newfield Central School District, Steve Yaple, Courtney McGuire, Jordan Fearon, Uniit Carruyo; the families and friends of the company members for supporting us all.

BIOS ALYSSA SALERNO (MARCY PARK) is very excited to have been cast (last minute) in her seventh Running to Places production. Recently you may have seen her in Dryden High School's "Anything Goes" as Reno Sweeney or R2P's "Pirates of Penzance" as Frederick. Alyssa is also currently rehearsing for a student-run play at Dryden High School (the shows are July 21st and 22nd) and then moving on to R2P's "Footloose" as Urleen. She would like to thank Joey and Jeremy for casting her in one of her favorite shows, her fellow cast mates for being hilarious and talented, her boyfriend Dominic and her parents for always being supportive of her inability to say "no" to too many summer shows.

CAITLIN MALLORY (RONA) is excited to take part in her 15th show with R2P. She is a recent graduate of LACS where she acted in and directed in many shows including Our Town (Director), Hamlet (Director), Oliver! (Nancy), Pericles (Director), and many others. Caitlin will be attending Marymount Manhattan College in New York City next school year to study musical theatre. Some of her favorite roles with R2P have been Eulalie (The Music Man), Company (Joanne), Tess (Crazy for You), Marmee (Little Women), and A Christmas Carol (Christmas Future, and later, Christmas Present). She has also enjoyed working as both a Stage Manager and Assistant Stage Manager throughout the years. She would like to thank Joey for his many years of mentoring and inexplicable patience and Jeremy for making music make sense. She'd also like to thank Cyia, Julia, and Mae for all their hard work and for standing in countless times as audience volunteers. And of course, the wonderful cast for being a true joy to work with. Enjoy the show!

CYIA DREW (ASM/REHEARSAL SM) is thrilled to be spending her summer doing yet another R2P show. Some of her previous backstage credits include Music Man, All in the Timing, Crazy for You, and Rent. She would like to extend her thanks to everyone involved with this show, especially Joey, Jeremy, Hallie, Tucker, Fatima, Brian, and Deb and Jim. She would also like to thank Julia, Cam, Rachel, Mark/Ron and Nick for being wonderful friends. Enjoy the show!

DEBORAH DREW (RESIDENT SET DESIGNER) has been designing sets for student productions since 1999. She joined the R2P family in 2013 and currently sits on the R2P Board of Directors. Deb received a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Roger Williams College (University) in Bristol, RI. She works with her husband James, in their home business, “The Architects Drew” based in Dryden, NY. The Architects Drew design custom homes, as well as small commercial projects. Deb has enjoyed working with the R2P production team as well as the serving on the Board. Deb has enjoyed getting to know the students of R2P through the last two seasons. Some of her favorite set designs include, Seussical, Fiddler on the Roof, Little Women and 13 with R2P and Oliver!, Pirates of Penzance, Blythe Spirit, The Music Man, On the Town, Romeo & Juliet, Guys and Dolls, and Grease with Dryden Drama Club. Deb and Jim are happy to have a new

construction studio in Danby to accommodate the mission of collaboration with students, parents and design team to produce professional youth theater in Tompkins County.

HALLIE MALINA (COSTUME DESIGNER) is thrilled to be a part of such a fun show. You may have seen Hallie onstage in past R2P and Ithaca High School productions or seen some of her costumes in IHS's Anything Goes or Our Town at LACS. Hallie is planning on pursuing a degree in theater from Bucknell University in the fall. She would like to thank to Joey for this opportunity, Liz for the invaluable guidance and support, the beautiful cast and crew, and her friends and family for being her rock. "Enjoy the show!"

JAMES DREW, AIA (RESIDENT SET CONSTRUCTION ENGINEER) has enjoyed being with the R2P family the last 2 seasons. Jim also contributes as a Board of Directors member. Jim is the Work Environment Health and Safety Coordinator for TST BOCES. Jim is a Registered Architect and runs his home-based business, “The Architects Drew” with his wife Deborah in Dryden, NY. Jim helps keep the sets easy to construct, which keeps the actors and crew safe and also translates to easy and painless strikes as we “run to places”. He was instrumental in obtaining a construction studio for R2P to help us continue our mission of great accessible youth theatre in Tompkins County!

Janet Olsen (Props Master) is still running to get whatever Joey or the cast needs. Thank you to Julia for all her help and support and to her wife Courtney for her patience and brainstorming.

JEREMY PLETTER (RESIDENT MUSIC DIRECTOR) is the resident music director at R2P. Previous shows as Music Director with this company include Seussical, A Christmas Carol, and Into the Woods – along with every show of the past three seasons. In addition, Jeremy was seen on stage with R2P in Urinetown, Guys and Dolls, Little Shop of Horrors, and more. He also was in the Ithaca College Main Stage production of The Magic Flute. “Thank you all for coming and enjoy the show.”

JOEY STEINHAGEN (RESIDENT/ARTISTIC DIRECTOR) grew up doing community theatre in a company that was surely the spiritual ancestor of Running to Places. He founded R2P in 2007 as a way to bring together the many passionate and talented young people of this area so they could create theatre, develop life skills, and make some of the best friendships of their lives – much as he did when he was young. He has been teaching, acting in, and directing theatre for young people throughout Tompkins County since 1993, and received his BFA in Acting from Ithaca College in 1996. Over the years, he has directed musicals and plays at Ithaca and Dryden High Schools; Dryden, Boynton, and DeWitt Middle Schools; the Northern Lights Learning Center; and the Hangar Theatre’s Kiddstuff series. Joey has taught acting at Ithaca College, Cornell, SUNY Cortland, Hangar Theatre’s Next Generation program, and the Ithaca Youth Bureau. As an actor, he has appeared in many productions with the Kitchen Theatre Company, most recently in Peter and the Starcatcher as Mrs. Bumbrake, Teacher, and Mutey. He is grateful to his beautiful fiancé Uniit for all of her love, patience, and support, and would like to give a special shout-out to his crazy and wonderful boys, Aram and Kii.

JOSIE CLOUGHERTY (LEAF CONEYBEAR) is pretty darn hyped to be in this show, and is having relative difficulty containing her excitement. Josie has appeared in numerous other shows, including Hamlet, Pericles, and Twelfth Night with LACS Shakespeare, and Oliver! with LACS Drama. As you can guess, she goes to LACS, where she is going to be in 11th grade next year, unless she didn’t pass that math final in June… When she is not doing shows (which is not very often), Josie can be found sulking in corners, talking to plants, or devouring the souls of books, often all at once. She would like to thank her mother for creating her, her dad for helping, and her friends for giving her love, support, and food. She hopes you all enjoy the show, but it’s okay if you don’t. You rock your own opinions, pal.

KII KINSELLA (DAN) is ecstatic (e-c-s-t-a-t-i-c) to be in his fifth R2P show! Kii is an actor, director, writer, and fashion designer. He has previously been seen as “The Child” in Ithaca Opera’s Don Giovanni, “Bob” in The Kitchen Theatre's I Have a Song to Sing, O!, Ensemble in R2P’s The Little Mermaid, Ensemble in R2P’s Pirates of Penzance, “Winthrop Paroo” in R2P’s The Music Man at the State Theatre, and “The Pharaoh” in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. In his free time, Kii likes to write scripts, design clothing, and rehearse lines for his next show 4 months before rehearsal starts. He would like to thank his friends and family for being so supportive with his current and future acting career and the cast and crew for being so great to work and hang out with! Without further ado, he would like you to enjoy the show!

MADDI CARROLL (OLIVE’S MOM, LEAF’S MOM, JESUS) is participating in her 10th Running to Places show and is going to be a senior at Ithaca High School in the fall. Some of her favorite roles include Marta (Company, Running to Places), Blanket Person (Rent, Running to Places) and Betty (All In The Timing, Running to Places). When she isn’t singing, you can find her playing

with her three dogs or playing her guitar. She would like to thank Joey, Jeremy, Fatima and Tucker and the entire production team and tech crew for everything they did to make this show possible and make this show as amazing as it is. And remember, once you start to spell a word, you may start over but the sequences of letters already spoken may not be changed! Enjoy the show!

MaDELYN MORRIS (SWISS ARMY MEMBER, MARY, MARIGOLD) is a new 9th grader. This is her third Running to Places production. She has also participated in Boynton's drama club most recently performing as Princess Winnifred from Once Upon a Matteress. She would like to thank her vocal teacher, Sharon Constianes, Joey Steinhagen, Jeremy Pletter, Robert Winans, Nathan Parker, and most importantly her mother for all of the opportunities they have extended to her. She will be going across the sea to further endeavor in the art attending Colfe's school in Greenwich, England. She would like to thank all those whom made Ithaca such fun for her both educationally and through theatrical opportunities. She is extremely grateful to be in this show and hopes you enjoy The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee!

MARK DODICI (CARL DAD / OLIVE’S DAD / ENSEMBLE) is very excited to be in his fourth Running to Places production! He is currently a rising senior at Dryden High School, where he has been avidly involved in the drama department for a surprisingly short time. You might recently have seen him on the Dryden stage as “Moonface Martin” in Anything Goes, in R2P’s All in the Timing as “Don” and “Phillip Glass”, or in R2P’s The Music Man as “Jacey Squires.” When not acting and/or singing, he enjoys swimming, playing baseball, playing soccer, playing the French horn, and stressing about everything. Mark gives a shoutout to his parents for shuttling him places, to Roni for doing the same and also mocking him when needed, to Cyia Drew for being Cyia Drew, and to all of his wonderful castmates and directors for making this such a fun experience. He would also like to take this opportunity to shamelessly plug Dryden High School’s collection of student-run one act plays (which he is co-directing), including the world premiere of a brand-new play! Mark would like to tell you that performances are July 21 and 22 at 7 pm with a recommended donation of $5. And without further ado, he hopes you enjoy this pandemoniacal show!

NICK MRAS (WILLIAM BARFEE) is a rising junior at Newfield High School and is thrilled to be doing another outstanding show with Running to Places! You may remember him in R2P's The Music Man as "Marcellus Washburn", The Little Mermaid as "Grimsby", Company as "Larry" or Crazy for You as "Custus". In his spare time, Nick enjoys the drums, bass guitar and hanging out with family and friends.

RILEY KWORTNIK (SCHWARZY) is over the top excited to be playing the iconic character that is Logainne SchwartzandGrubenierre. Riley is a rising junior at Ithaca High School and enjoys Theatre, Choir, and sleeping. Favorite roles include "Molly" in Annie, "Flotsam" in The Little Mermaid, and "Swift" in All in the Timing, with R2P. As well as "Archie" in 13 The Musical with Dewitt Middle School, and "Corwin Haygood/ Sven Iversson" in Stage Fright with IHS. She would like to thank Joey, Jeremy, the rest of the team, Ms. Zaryski, the whole cast, her family, her friends Wynne, Carys, Laura, Joya, Noah, Lili, Marnie, Priya, and Laurel, and a special thanks to her best friend Jack for being her #1 supporter throughout the whole process, and for all the love. Now, thilence your thell phone, thit back, relaxth, and enjoy!

SEBASTIAN FULLERTON (CHIP TOLENTINO) is very excited and sad to be doing his last R2P show. He has been in one other R2P show as "Ewart Dunlop" in The Music Man. He has been in many other shows such as when he was "Macbeth" in Macbeth. Sebastian was a senior this year, and he thankfully graduated. Although he didn't do R2P for long, he enjoyed every second of it and he is thankful for everything Joey, Jeremy, and Tucker taught him. He also loved every moment spent with this cast and would like to thank them for being such good friends.

VERONICA CATOR-SZYMANSKI (TRISH MAHONEY) is honored to be in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee as her last high school musical theater performance. She has previously been "Trotsky" and "Woman 1" in All in the Timing with Running to Places, "Ramona Merengue" in Dryden’s Zombie Prom, and the "Sergeant", in Pirates of Penzance with Running to Places. Veronica is the Student Musical Director for Beyond Measure A Cappella Group, as well as a member of jazz band. She has also recently written the music for a student-run show being performed later this month in Dryden. She is going to Baldwin Wallace in the fall to major in music composition. Veronica would like to thank the cast, crew, and directors for making this show a wonderful experience. Running to Places has become a second home to her, and she could not be more thankful that she was able to spend her last year of high school with such amazing people. She would also like to thank her family for motivating her to do her best.

Veronica would like to give a special thanks to Claire Conklin, Mark Dodici, and Rachel Frank, her closest friends, for being amazing people and always giving her a reason to smile, and to Krista Easton, for always being supportive and constantly encouraging her to be the best version of herself. Enjoy the show!

ZOE KLAUSNER (BONNIE PANCH) is thrilled to be a part of her first R2P production. You may have seen her in Ithaca High School's production of Anything Goes. Later this summer, Zoe can be seen as "Lydia Lubey" in the Take Ten Theatre Company's All My Sons. When offstage, she enjoys cooking up a storm and petting all animals in her path. Zoe would like to thank the cast, crew, and everyone in-between for making this a welcoming and fun-filled experience. She hopes the show leaves you ebullient!
