Brampton Park - a colourful past

The history of Brampton Park can be traced back to the 12th Century when the estate was the same

size as it is now, approximately 125 acres.

It has been subject to many changes of ownership leading to various extensions and improvements

throughout the centuries until in 1907 when the most spectacular and devastating fire in Brampton

Park's history occurred, the eastern half of the building was gutted in a blaze which lasted 3 days. The

destruction was so complete that no attempt was made to rebuild the original house and little more

than one-third of the building, as it stood before the fire, is now in existence. The refurbished area can

be distinguished by the brick colour used. The 19th Century building work was completed using mainly

yellow bricks and the early 20th Century repairs were carried out using bricks of a more reddish hue.

During the first World War, the manor was used to house German prisoners. With the onset of World

War 2, the property subsequently became the 'Sun Babies Nursery', a home for about 100 infants

evacuated from North London. It continued to be used for housing evacuees until the Spring of 1942.

A further refurbishment programme began in 1987. The renovation was finished in late 1988 and the

results of the work have seen sensitive blending of modern building and decorative materials with the

aim of retaining as much of the character of the old building as possible.

In the late Spring of 1945 Brampton Park became the functional Headquarters of the RAF Technical

Training. It has been home to various branches of the RAF since, and its association only finished when

the site was recently acquired for residential use.

Brampton, Cambridgeshire - a wonderful place to make home

Brampton is home to about 5,000 residents and this thriving village has a host of amenities and facilities

including a nursery and primary school, shops, pubs, restaurants, doctors and dentists. With many historic

buildings and an ancient parish church, of particular interest are Brampton’s connections with the diarist

Samuel Pepys. Brampton still has its village green and enjoys a number of meeting halls, serving as venues

for a host of local events and community activities, plus playing fields that include a children’s play area,

skate park, Brampton Wood and Brampton 18 hole Golf Course.

There is an array of open spaces nearby, such as the River Great Ouse, Portholme Meadow, Hinchingbrooke

Country Park, while the excitement of a day at the races can be enjoyed at nearby Huntingdon Racecourse.

Brampton Park will host a new community building for the Parish Council and local community, formal open

space comprising; football pitches, tennis courts, multi use games area, play areas and allotments. There

will also be a large CO-OP and 2 further smaller retail units.

Huntingdon - and further afield

The beautiful market town of Huntingdon just 3 miles away

owes its existence to the crossing of two important

highways; the river Ouse and the Ermine Street Roman

Road. Boasting a famous son Oliver Cromwell, who was

born here in 1599, Huntingdon is full of History.

An abundant range of services and amenities include a

local hospital and three separate health centres along

with a winning combination of sporting and recreational

facilities. Educationally there are first class pre-school

groups, nursery and primary schools, two secondary

schools and the Huntingdon Regional College for further

and adult education.

The university city of Cambridge with its leading-edge

computer information technology businesses, is just 15

miles away, and London Stansted Airport only a further

half an hour away. Train journey times of under an hour

into King’s Cross Station, London make Huntingdon even
