key structure of the waterway connection from Hannover via Magdeburg to Berlin. Construction of the required canal bridge over the Elbe river started as early as the 1930ies. In 1942, the war forced construction work to be stopped. So the bridge remained unfinished to this time. After the German reunification and the opening of the Eastern European markets, the west-east connection has become more and more important for traffic. Both from an economic and ecological point of view the construction of a canal bridge over the Elbe river - the waterway crossing - along with the double water saving lock in Hohenwarthe - proved to be the most favourable solution to cross the Elbe river independent of the water levels.The bridge is constructed as a steel bridge over the entire length. The total length of 918 m is subdivided in the river span with a length of 228 m and the approach spans with a length of 690 m. The largest single span over the river is approx. 106 m. As the leader of the Canal Bridge Magdeburg Consortium, DSD, a company of Ferrostaal, fabricated and erected approx. 24,500 tons of steel structures.

The dimensions are as follows: steel weight:3,900 tons, spans:83.20 -208 -83.20 m, total length:374.40 m.The traffic load was assumed in accordance with the load diagram UIC 71.The remaining assumed loads comply with the specifications of DS 804 considering a horizontal acceleration of 0.50 m/s2 as seismic load.The design of the bridge was based on the required operation stability analyses.

After its opening to traffic in 2002 the bridge will form the link between the Luxembourg motorway A13 and the German motorway A8 - called E29 - and this will considerably reduce the time required to travel within the Saar-Lor-Lux region.The bridge was built in 660 working days using 3,900 tons of steel structures and 10,000 m 3 of reinforced concrete. Along with the "Sauertal Bridge" this Schengen Viaduct is one of the largest bridges in this region

made it necessary to expand the 4 existing roadway lanes of the Tagus Bridge "25 April "to a total of 6 lanes. At the same time, a supporting structure for a double-track railway line was built below the roadway deck. Due to the considerably higher loads, two additional supporting cables were necessary. Their final position is 3 m above the existing cables.In the area of the approach spans a new composite bridge was built for the railway tracks below the existing concrete roadway deck as extension of the new river span railway deck. DSD, a company of Ferrostaal, as leader of the consortium for this project supplied and erected approx.17,000 tons of steel structures.Construction time was 3 years.
