We are starting our newest math unit- multiplication and division. So far we have focused on area and perimeter. We will be moving into multiplying and dividing with multi-digit numbers using the area model. Please take the time to practice multiplication/division facts with your child. Your child will be working on his/her facts in school, building up their fluency. It would help tremendously if this was also practiced at home!

Next week we will be starting a new novel called Top Secret by John Reynolds Gardiner. It is a science-based book that involves the concept of photosynthesis. Students will be working on their marking of the text, as well as writing skills (making a claim, supporting with text details, and explaining using inferential thinking). We will also continue to practice our close reading skills- rereading complex texts to gain a deeper understanding and build vocabulary.

We finished up our Native American unit. Hopefully your child came home and showed you the wampum that they made in class! They loved working on that project! Our next unit will be Colonial Times. We will be learning about the impact of British settlers and what life was like for those that lived during that time period. We will discuss the relationship between the Native Americans and the British, and identify the contributions they made to each other.

We continue to learn about plants! Students will be learning about the life cycle of a plant, photosynthesis, as well as how seeds travel. They will be working on a craftivity involving making a plant leaf that identifies the parts and process of photosynthesis. Our unit test will be on Nov. 24th.

Spelling: Our newest study is of the roots “spir” and “vor”, meaning breathe and eat. Since spelling tests involved writing 5 sentences, and knowing the correct definition of those 5 words, students have been encouraged to work on definitions at home, as well as help prepare for the test by creating 5 sentences that they can then use on their test.
