George Washington Carver was an American scientist, botanist,

educator, and inventor. He

ELLA FITZGERALD(1917-1996)

Ella Fitzgerald known as the “First Lady of Song” and the “Queen of Jazz” was an American Jazz Singer with a voice known for it’s Purity of Tone and a “horn like” improvisational ability, particularly in her Scat Singing.

MATTHEW HENSON

[ 1866-1955]

Matthew Henson was born on August 8, 1866 in Charles county Maryland. He died in New York on March 9, 1955 at 88 years old. He was the first person to go the North Pole.

Fredua Koranteng "Freddy" Adu is an American soccer player. At the age of 14, Adu became the youngest American ever to sign a major league professional contract in any team sport when he was chosen by D.C. United as the number one overall pick in the 2004 MLS SuperDraft.

SIDNEY POITIER Born February 20th, 1927

Sidney Poitier is African American actor, director, and filmmaker, who became know as a leading post World War II African American movie star. Sidney Poitier became the first African American to win the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1964.

TINA TURNER(November 26th,1939)

Tina Turner was singer ,dancer, actress and author whose career has spread more than half a century, earning her widespread recognition and numerous awards. She is well known for her role in the movie “What’s Love Got To Do With It”.

ALTHEA GIBSON1927-2003

At an early age, she developed a love of sports. Her great talent was in tennis but in the 1940s

and 50s, most tournaments were closed to

African Americans.Gibson kept playing, and

winning until her skills could no longer be denied and in 1951, she became the first African

American to play at Wimbledon.

DOMINIQUE DAWES(1976- )

Dominique Dawes is a three time Olympian, Dawes represented the US in

the1992,1996, and 2000 games and won three Olympic medals. Dawes first

competed at the US nationals as a junior elite in 1988. As a young

gymnast, Dawes was best known for her back to back tumbling on the floor.

(1930-1965)

Lorraine Hansberry was a playwright and writer. She was the first black woman to write a play performed on Broadway. Her most famous work is the play “A Raisin the Sun”.

He was a born Malcolm Little in Omaha, Nebraska. Malcolm X was an African American Muslim minister and human rights activist.

LaVar Burton is an American actor, presenter, director, producer and

author. He was born February 16,1957.Burton is best known for him roles as the young Kunta Kinte in the 1977 award winning ABC television

mini series Roots. He also played Lt..Commander Geordi LA Forge in

STAR TREK Next Generation, and was the host and executive producer of

Halle Maria Berry (born Maria Halle Berry; is an American actress and former fashion model. She won an Academy Award for Best Actress

Oscar for a leading role.

CORETTA SCOTT KING(1927-2006)

Coretta Scott King was an American civil rights activist and the wife of the civil right leader Martin Luther King Jr. She established a distinguished career in activism in her own right. Working side-by-side with her husband, she took part in the Montgomery Bus Boycott and worked to pass Civil Rights Act.

BERRY GORDY JR.(1929-present)

Berry Gordy Jr., founder of Motown Records, the

most successful black owned music company in

the history of the United States. Motown

Records recorded some of the most successful

songs and groups in R&B and beyond, like

Smokey Robinson, The Supremes, Michael

Jackson and Stevie Wonder. Gordy was inducted

into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.

HAROLD GEORGE BELAFONTE JR.

“HARRY BELAFONTE”Born (March 1, 1927)

Harry Belafonte a native of New York City, New York is known as a civil rights activist, actor, and musician. He has achieved lasting fame for such songs as “The Banana Boat Song (Day-O)” and his humanitarian works. During his acting career, he stared in rolls along with Dorothy Dandridge, Moms Mabley, and Sidney Poitier. He sang along side Lena Horne. As an outspoken civil rights activist, he was very close to Dr. Martin Luther King.

Gordon Parks, was a humanitarian with deep commitment to social justice. Parks was also a celebrated composer, author, and filmmaker who interacted with many of the most prominent people of his era.

ANITA DE FRANTZAnita Lucette DeFrantz was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on

October 4, 1952.

She won the bronze medal in 1976 Montreal Olympics in the U.S. Women’s eight-oared shell.

In 1978 World Champions won silver medal, led the United

States to boycott 1980’s Olympics.

(1927- Present)

Leontyne Price was the first famous African American Opera Singer to be known international.

She began her music journey at the age of five, when she started taking piano lessons.

She won eighteen Grammy Awards for her performances.

FATS WALLER(1904-1943)

Born in New York City, Fats Waller was the son of a churchman. He learned how to play the organ in church with his mother, Adeline Waller, who gave him a background in classical music. Fats' first musical experience was playing harmonium for his father's Abyssinian Baptist Church at 10 years of age.
