George Washington Carver was an American scientist, botanist,

educator, and inventor. He

made over 300 uses for the peanut. Our school was named in his honor.

George Washington Carver Elementary and Arts Magnet.

Ella Fitzgerald known as the “First Lady of Song” and the “Queen of Jazz” was an American Jazz Singer with a voice known for it’s Purity of Tone and a “horn like” improvisational ability, particularly in her Scat Singing.

Matthew Henson was born on August 8, 1866 in Charles county Maryland. He died in New York on March 9, 1955 at 88 years old. He was the first person to go the North Pole.

Fredua Koranteng "Freddy" Adu is an American soccer player. At the age of 14, Adu became the youngest American ever to sign a major league professional contract in any team sport when he was chosen by D.C. United as the number one overall pick in the 2004 MLS SuperDraft.

Sidney Poitier is African American actor, director, and filmmaker, who became know as a leading post World War II African American movie star. Sidney Poitier became the first African American to win the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1964.

Sugar Ray Leonard was a world famous boxer. He won world titles in five weight divisions. Leonard was the first boxer to earn more than $100 million in boxing. He was named after the famous singer Ray Charles.

At an early age, she developed a love of sports. Her great talent was in tennis but in the 1940s

and 50s, most tournaments were closed to

African Americans.Gibson kept playing, and

winning until her skills could no longer be denied and in 1951, she became the first African

American to play at Wimbledon.

DOMINIQUE DAWES(1976- )

Dominique Dawes is a three time Olympian, Dawes represented the US in

the1992,1996, and 2000 games and won three Olympic medals. Dawes first

competed at the US nationals as a junior elite in 1988. As a young

gymnast, Dawes was best known for her back to back tumbling on the floor.

Berry Gordy Jr., founder of Motown Records, the

most successful black owned music company in

the history of the United States. Motown

Records recorded some of the most successful

songs and groups in R&B and beyond, like

Smokey Robinson, The Supremes, Michael

Jackson and Stevie Wonder. Gordy was inducted

into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.

“HARRY BELAFONTE”Born (March 1, 1927)

Harry Belafonte a native of New York City, New York is known as a civil rights activist, actor, and musician. He has achieved lasting fame for such songs as “The Banana Boat Song (Day-O)” and his humanitarian works. During his acting career, he stared in rolls along with Dorothy Dandridge, Moms Mabley, and Sidney Poitier. He sang along side Lena Horne. As an outspoken civil rights activist, he was very close to Dr. Martin Luther King.
