I’ve been waiting 22 years to sell this home, but feel oddly ill-equipped to convey what you’ll see or feel. You are humbled, like what happens when we stare out to sea & feel small, coupled with a cunning craving, a coveting of livable art, your capture, to place just so in the sun. An Unbearable Lightness of Being...Wait a minute! Is that a family room off the kitchen? Toss me a Pop Tart Mom!!!!

Washington, DC. To so many around the world, this city is where America’s president lives and bills are passed into law. It is where the monuments tower and powerful politicians, lawmakers, and lobbyists make their home. It is where inaugurations take place, protesters picket , and leaders deliver speeches. Yes, Washington, DC is all of these things. However, to those of us who live here, “our city” is so much more. Six years ago, Yachad (yah-hod), a Washington, DC nonprofit committed to bringing local communities together by preserving affordable homes and revitalizing neighborhoods, decided to create a stage where the “so much more” could be recognized, discussed, and celebrated. It was a chance to expand how Yachad brings communities together to include film. It also gave Yachad an opportunity, through the voices of filmmakers, documentary subjects and actors, to showcase what it has spent over 2 decades working to preserve-the racial, cultural, economic and religious differences that make our city so unique. What started in the Langston Room of Busboys and Poets and then grew into the Goethe Institute, now finds a new home at the Atlas Performing Arts Center as part of the incredible INTERSECTIONS Festival. Strangely, every year we receive film submissions that coincidentally have similar themes. This year the themes that have surfaced are the power of art to heal across cultural lines and the good and bad effects of neighborhoods changing and communities shifting. These themes of ‘intersections’ could not be better timing for our partnership with the Atlas INTERSECTIONS Festival.

We encourage you to browse this program book and learn about the wonderful films and festivities we will be hosting this year. The film subjects are as diverse as the thoughts and people of our city. Film subjects range from the DC jazz scene, to troubled youth finding hope through Go-Go music, to the history and future of Chinatown and U Street, to the passion of a widowed artist fighting for healthcare rights through a mural.

We invite you to learn more about how you can get involved with Yachad and help maintain the diversity, preserve the history and help set the course for the future of our city and its communities. Check out page 18 for more on our programs.

YACHAD (yah-hod) means together.

Bringing communities together by preserving affordable homes and revitalizing neighborhoods since 1990.

Yachad—meaning together in Hebrew— is a nonprofit organization that rebuilds and reinforces bridges of understanding between communities. We create opportunities for understanding by working in partnership with homeowners, houses of worship, and other nonprofits to repair homes and renovate community spaces. Yachad brings together financial resources and skilled and unskilled volunteers who work with community stakeholders to revitalize our shared metro area. We welcome people of all faiths to share in our work. Yachad’s work is rooted in the Jewish commitment to seek justice by engaging in acts of loving kindness.

Get with Our Programs! There is something for everyone!YacHad UniTed is a group of dc young professionals committed to networking through hands-on community work. The group comes together for Yachad repair projects, social meet-ups, and fundraising events.

Hard HaTs and HelPinG Hands HOme rePair (5-H) mobilizes real estate and construction professionals – “handymen” and tradespeople – to provide their expertise and services to Yachad projects free of charge or at substantially reduced fees.

We THe PeOPle Federal HOlidaY PrOGram organizes individual volunteers to spend a federal holiday repairing the home of a lower income family or working on one of Yachad’s many nonprofit facility projects. in one day, volunteers working side-by-side with our clients, see the changes their work can have on a family or a nonprofit partner.

HOUse/miTzvaH ParTY provides groups of people (friends/family, colleagues, clubs) a custom-fit volunteer project that will fit their time, expertise and budget, and give them the opportunity to celebrate an event or team build through Yachad’s hands-on repair projects.

neiGHbOr TO neiGHbOr iniTiaTive offers generous donors the opportunity to underwrite the costs of a home or nonprofit facility renovation. n2n donors can work on their own projects or Yachad can connect groups of enthusiastic volunteers to do the work—such as youth groups, civic organizations and area college students.

FaiTH TO FaiTH and neiGHbOrHOOd develOPmenT PrOGram partners Yachad with area houses of worship and non-profit facilities that are involved in planning and undertaking construction projects that will be of benefit to the community. Yachad offers strategic planning, architectural and legal services and financial planning.

sUkkOT in sPrinG is “social action in a box” for Jewish congregations to financially support and work on a Yachad house or nonprofit facility project. it’s a great way for synagogues to do worthwhile work in the community and leave the planning to Yachad.

ramP iT UP! is a summer youth build program for high school students who spend a week building an accessibility ramp for a lower income homeowner with disabilities. Using team work, 4x4s and power tools, students develop leadership skills, learn construction basics and transform someone’s life—including their own.

Immler: The international musicians illustrate that idea – they come to the United States because of jazz, and they always end up in DC for some reason. They found better working conditions here, because people in DC really appreciate the jazz scene, really keep it alive.

OCFF: Different musicians in your film say that jazz is dead, or “a museum piece,” while others say that jazz will never die. Which do you think is correct?

Immler: I didn’t want to put my own opinion in the film. I’m not a musician or an expert. What do I know about jazz? I wanted to leave them [the documentary subjects] to it. many old-timers, such as Billy Taylor surprisingly said jazz is in the best position possible. There were some great things during the three and a half years we spent filming the docu-mentary. Some of those old buildings were completely rejuvenated, like the Howard The-ater. Also, esperanza Spalding, who was invited to the White House by michelle Obama and went with Barack Obama when he won the Nobel Peace Prize, was nominated for a Grammy for Best New Artist. She was nominated in the same category as Justin Bieber, and other pop artists like that, and she won! It’s the first time for a jazz musician to win that award, and that was really good to see. I do think jazz is in really good hands, especially in DC. People can make a living on jazz, which may be the best measure of jazz’s vitality.

Oxygen for the Ears: Living Jazz will be screened on March 10th at noon at The Atlas Performing Arts Center as part of the Our City Film Festival. A com-plimentary jazz concert by musicians highlighted in the film will take place at 11:30am in the lobby before the screening.

INTERVIEW by IsabEl NaThaN foR ouR CITy fIlm fEsTIVal (oCff)

oCff: You’re an astrophysicist- how did you become interested in the DC jazz scene?

Immler: my wife and I moved to DC about ten years ago, and my commute always took me down U Street. I was always intrigued by the buildings, these big beautiful buildings that were in a kind of limbo-not being maintained and not being torn down. I decided to do some research, and found out all about the DC jazz scene. Once I did some research, I realized the jazz scene wasn’t just history. On any night right now, even during the week, you can go out to ten or fifteen venues with great jazz. I knew I had to tell people, especially outside DC. I mean, when people think of DC, they think of government, special interests, but never jazz. There’s this great jazz community that’s been here since the beginning. One day, I just spontaneously decided to strap a camera on and record the story of jazz in DC. OCFF: Do you play any instruments?

Immler: I play a little sax.

OCFF: There are several international musicians in your film, including lennie Cuje, luis Faife, and Knud Jensen. How do you reconcile that with the idea that jazz is “the only art form we have in the United States”?

What does an astrophysicist, a filmmaker, and a German have in common? They are all Stefan Immler, Director of Oxygen for the Ears: Living Jazz
