William Allen

In 1762 Allentown was founded by William Allen. He didn’t use the name Allentown for his new town instead it was known as Northampton Town.William Allen was born in

1704 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Solomon Dorney

The founder of Dorney Park, Solomon Dorney, was born in 1831. The park began as a fish hatchery and picnic grove along Cedar Creek on the West Side

Lehigh Valley Zoo A 29 acre area

of land donated by Harry Trexler to the Lehigh County to educate the people of Allentown about nature.

The zoo is a part of the 1,100-acre Trexler Nature Preserve, Lehigh Valley Zoo is home to more than 200 animals representing 70 species

Trout Hall

The home of James Allen, the son of the William Allen. This summer home was built in 1770.

Dorney Park

Built in 1860 by Solomon Dorney. Once a small picnic grove, now a recreation resort that family have enjoyed for nearly 150 years.

Parades

The Allentown Halloween Parade is the oldest Halloween parade in the United States.

The Allentown Saint Patrick Parade began 1955.

Fairs

Mayfair is an outdoor festival held annually at Cedar Beach Park in Allentown, Pennsylvania. The festival features arts, crafts, entertainment, music and concerts.

The Great Allentown Fair is in it’s 158th year. The Fair is located between 17th and 21st streets and Liberty and Chew streets at the Allentown Fairs Grounds. “the Fair invites guests to learn about agriculture while spending an exciting day riding rides, playing games and seeing shows.”

Parks

• The Allentown City Park system is made up of 25 parks and a municipal golf course.

• The park system is makes up 13% of the city or about 2,000 acres.

The friends of Allentown report, “Parks improve our quality of life in many ways; they provide recreation opportunities, quiet refuge, environmental benefit, and opportunities to connect with nature.”

J. Birney Crum Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium in Allentown that seats 15,000. It is the home stadium for William Allen, Dieruff and Central Catholic High Schools.

Coca-Cola Park is a 10,000-seat baseball park, home to the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs. The grand opening was in April 2008.

The city of Allentown is the home to all types of schools: public, private and higher education.

Muhlenberg and Cedar Crest Colleges are located in Allentown.

• The famous liberty bell spent time in Allentown. In 1777 the Liberty Bell traveled from Philadelphia to Allentown on a wagon.

Built in 1926 until 1928, the Pennsylvania Power and Light building is the tallest building in Allentown at 23 stories tall.

An upscale department store that opened in 1897 by Max and Charles Hess. Hess’ was located at 9th and Hamilton Streets in Allentown.

Hess’ Department Store closed in 1996 due to the lack of business.

Once known as Lyric Theatre opened in 1899. Now known as Symphony Hall newly renovated in 2006.

• Marie Nemes is a third grade teacher in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

• She has taught kindergarten and third grade at Ritter Elementary for ten years.
