18 August 2016 Dear Parents, Staff, Boys and Girls Our children are exposed to so many, “epic fails, stunts gone wrong, can you see it? That moment when!videos, memes, pictures etc and the list goes on! Society has allowed our youth to fall into a trap where they celebrate failure more often than success, I know I have discussed this before and often make reference to it when I speak of Cyber-safety and bullying. I recently read this quote I had banked on my old hard-drive: “People of our time are losing the power of celebration. Instead of celebrating we seek to be amused or entertained. Celebration is an active state, an act of expressing reverence or appreciation. To be entertained is a passive state - it is to receive pleasure afforded by an amusing act or a spectacle.... Celebration is a confrontation, giving attention to the transcendent meaning of one's actions.” - Abraham Joshua Heschel, “The Wisdom of Heschel” My request this week is that we choose to celebrate what is right in the world, and in particular our 80 years of existence as a school this weekend. What better way to celebrate than with our St George’ s Fair on Saturday. We hope to see all of our families and their friends here on Saturday and may you all have a wonderful time with your children at what promises to be our best to date! I will not bore you with a long newsletter as there is a lot of information about the Fair in this letter today. 18 August 2016 Dear Parents, Staff, Boys and Girls

Our children are exposed to so many, “epic fails, stunts gone wrong, can you see it? That moment when!“

videos, memes, pictures etc and the list goes on! Society has allowed our youth to fall into a trap where

they celebrate failure more often than success, I know I have discussed this before and often make

reference to it when I speak of Cyber-safety and bullying.

I recently read this quote I had banked on my old hard-drive:

“People of our time are losing the power of celebration. Instead of celebrating we seek to be amused or

entertained. Celebration is an active state, an act of expressing reverence or appreciation. To be

entertained is a passive state - it is to receive pleasure afforded by an amusing act or a spectacle....

Celebration is a confrontation, giving attention to the transcendent meaning of one's actions.”

- Abraham Joshua Heschel, “The Wisdom of Heschel”

My request this week is that we choose to celebrate what is right in the world, and in particular our 80

years of existence as a school this weekend. What better way to celebrate than with our St George’s Fair

on Saturday. We hope to see all of our families and their friends here on Saturday and may you all have a

wonderful time with your children at what promises to be our best to date!

I will not bore you with a long newsletter as there is a lot of information about the Fair in this letter today.

Kind regards
