Deer Lakes Lancer Stadium to Close for Summer

Deer Lakes’ Lancer Stadium will be closed for the summer whilecrews install a new artificial surface and track. The stadium isscheduled to close on June 13, following the Class of 2016’s com-mencement ceremony, and it will reopen in time for the 2016 fallsports season.

Earlier this spring, the district’s board of school directorsapproved the $625,000 resurfacing project with ProGrass LLC slat-ed to handle the field and ATT Sports Inc. tabbed to renovate thetrack.

ProGrass was the lowest of eight bidders for the field projectwith a price of $438,000. ATT Sports bid $187,000 to do the track, also the lowest out of three bids Deer Lakes received.

Deer Lakes director of buildings and grounds, Garry Dixson, who is overseeing the project, said that while the project is certain-ly costly, it is absolutely necessary and something the district hasbeen planning for some time.

“These surfaces typically last somewhere between 8-10 yearsand our current surface is 12 years-old and really beginning to showits age,” he said. “It is well past time we replaced it.”

According to Dixson, student safety is the primary consideration.“As a school district we have a deeply held responsibility, not onlyto our students but also to the young men and women against whomthey compete, to maintain a safe playing surface for in all sports andthis project allows us to do that.”

Money to pay for the projects will come from the district’s capi-tal reserve fund, which was bolstered earlier this year by a deal forMarcellus shale natural gas drilling under the district’s property.

2016 West Deer Township Clean-Up DayContinued from Page 1

The 2016 West Deer Township Clean-Up Day event was aresounding success.  Two years ago — the first Clean-Up Day —we drew five people total.  Last year we improved to fifteen partic-ipants.  This year we had thirty-one people sign in — some peoplecame, but did not sign in — and coupled with the Links residentgroup, the Transfiguration Parish group, and the West DeerVolunteer Fire Department #3 who worked in conjunction with theTownship, over 100 people participated to show their communityspirit!   Organizer Scott Woloszyk, Chairman Jeff Fleming, andTownship Manager Daniel Mator were on hand to provide cleanupmaterials and direction, and all three were pleasantly surprised bythe phenomenal turnout.

Throughout the year, the Township receives requests from small-er, residential cleanup groups to “redd up” their neighborhoods.  Wealways welcome that participation — cleanup is not limited toClean-Up Day — and will provide materials and guidance uponrequest.   Residents and groups may call the Township offices at724.265.3680 for more information.

West Deer Township thanks all those who came out to help beau-tify the community, and looks forward to continued growth and suc-cess.  We would also like to extend our gratitude to Scott Woloszykfor his hard work and diligence in creating and guiding this event.

Family Fishing Day Hosted by West Deer Parks and RecreationContinued from page 1

The West Deer Township Parks & Recreation Board along withthe Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission held their annual fam-ily fishing day with 30 families registered.

Despite the freezing weather, blowing winds, some snow flur-ries, and rain it was a well attended event and a great way for fam-ilies to spend some outdoor time together as a learning experience.Children learned basic fishing skills such as baiting a hook, casting, removing your catch from your line, knot tying, and much more.Kristi Niekamp, instructor for the day, emphasized safety in her pro-gram as well as techniques. Members of the Tri-County Trout clubparticipated in presentations as well.

Everything was provided, poles, reels, bait and no license wasrequired. The only “catch” was that a child had to be accompaniedby an adult and the adult had to bring a child. Parents were alsoallowed to fish without a license for the afternoon. See more photosfrom Family Fishing day at www.townflyer.com
