• Shingles shot—helps protect
against reactivation of the
varicella-zoster virus (VZV),
the same virus that causes
var ice l la (chickenpox).
(Generally, Medicare pre-
scription drug plans (Part
D) cover all commercially
available vaccines (like the
shingles shot) needed to pre-
vent illness. Contact your
Medicare drug plan for more
information about coverage).
• Tdap shots—helps protect
against tetanus, diphtheria,
and pertussis (“whooping
c o u g h ” ) .
(Generally, Medicare pre-
scription drug coverage (Part
D) covers all commercially
available shots needed to pre-
vent illness. Contact your
Medicare drug plan for more
information about coverage).
Also, you no longer need to wait
14 days between different vac-
cines. According to the
CDC, you can get a COVID-19
vaccine and other vaccines, in-
cluding flu and shingles, at the
same visit.
Adults need to keep their vac-
cinations up to date because im-
munity from childhood vaccines
can wear off over time. Talk to
your doctor to help you decide
which vaccines are right for you.

Prevention is key—protect yourself
with vaccines More than 79% of people 65 and over are fully vaccinated for
COVID-19—but are you defending yourself from other life-
threatening illnesses, like pneumonia and the flu? Getting vaccinat-
ed is a simple, safe, and effective way to protect yourself.
According to the CDC, “vaccines greatly reduce the risk of infec-
tion by working with the body's natural defenses to safely develop
immunity to disease.” They strengthen your immune system and
train it to create antibodies, like it does when it’s exposed to a dis-
ease.
Medicare covers a variety of vaccinations, including:
• COVID-19 vaccine—helps protect against Coronavirus disease
2019. (You pay nothing for the COVID-19 vaccine—you won’t
pay a deductible or copayment , and your provider can’t
charge you an administration fee to give you the shot).
• Flu shot—helps prevent the influenza virus (You pay nothing
for a flu shot if your doctor or other qualified health care provid-
er accepts assignment for giving the shot).
• Hepatitis B shots—helps protects against the Hepatitis B Virus
(Medicare Part B-Medical Insurance—covers these shots if
you’re at medium or high risk for Hepatitis B. Your risk for
Hepatitis B increases if one of these applies: You have hemo-
philia; End-Stage Renal Disease (Esrd); diabetes; you live with
someone who has Hepatitis B; you're a health care worker and
have frequent contact with blood or bodily fluids).
• Pneumococcal shots —helps protect against pneumococcal dis-
ease and its potentially serious complications, including infec-
tions like pneumonia and meningitis (Medicare Part B-Medical
Insurance—covers 2 different pneumococcal shots. Part B co-
vers the first shot at any time and a different, second shot if it’s
given at least one year after the first shot). (Your costs in Origi-
nal Medicare—You pay nothing for pneumococcal shots if your
doctor or other qualified health care provider ac-
cepts assignment for giving the shots).

Marci’s Medicare Answers Dear Marci,
Last year I received an Annu-
al Notice of Change, or ANOC.
Should I expect another one this year? What
should I do with an ANOC?
-John (Nashville, TN)
Dear John,
The Annual Notice of Change, or ANOC, is the
notice you receive from your Medicare Advantage
or Part D plan in late September. So yes, you
should expect to receive another one this year!
The ANOC gives a summary of any changes
in your plan’s costs and coverage that will take
effect January 1 of the next year. The ANOC is
typically mailed with the plan’s Evidence of Cov-
erage (EOC), which is a more comprehensive list
of the plan’s costs and benefits for the upcoming
year. You should review these notices to see if
your plan will continue to meet your health care
needs in the following year. If you are dissatisfied
with any upcoming changes, you can make
changes to your coverage during Fall Open En-
rollment.
Here are three types of changes to look for:
Find out what you can expect to pay for services
in 2022. Costs such as deductibles and copay-
ments can change each year. For example, your
plan may not have had a deductible in 2021, but it
could have one in 2022. A deductible is the
amount of money you owe out-of-pocket before
your plan begins to cover your care. Another ex-
ample is that your plan may increase the copay-
ments you owe for visits to your primary care pro-
vider or specialists.
Check to see if your doctors, hospitals, and other
health care providers and pharmacies will still be
in network for 2022. Plan networks can change
each year, which means your doctor may not be
in your plan’s network for 2022. You have the
lowest out-of-pocket costs if you go to providers
and pharmacies that are in your plan’s network. If
you see an out-of-network provider, your plan
may not cover any of the cost of your care, leav-
ing you to pay the cost out-of-pocket. You should
also contact your providers directly to confirm
that they will still be accepting your plan in the
coming year.
Look through the plan’s formulary. The formu-
lary is the list of drugs the plan covers. Formulary
changes can happen from year to year, meaning
your drug may not be covered in 2022 even
though it was covered in 2021. Make sure your
drugs will still be covered next year. If they are
not, then you may want to select a different drug
plan that covers all of your drugs. If the formulary
is incomplete, or you do not see your drug(s) on
the list, contact the plan directly to learn more.
If you have not received an ANOC by the end of
September, you should contact your Medicare
Advantage Plan or Part D plan to request it. This
notice can be very helpful in determining whether
you should make any changes to your cover-
age during Fall Open Enrollment. Reading your
ANOC should also prevent any surprises about
your coverage in the new year!
—Marci
