Christmas Bush

(Prostanthera lasianthos)

An understory shrub ranging in height from 2m to 20+

m. Its range is from river and creek silt banks to Ash

wet forests. The racemes of multiple white flowers, with

purple inserts, occur from November to February.

If revegetating after de-stocking, the seed bank will

produce new plants after 3—4 years of no disturbance.

N.B. ‘Lasianthos’ refers to ‘hairy or woolly’ flowers.

Further information is available in “Flora of the Otway

Plain & Ranges” Vol II by Enid Mayfield.

Otway E Bikes ABN: 34 871 539 744 Electric Bicycle Tours: Breathe Easy… Ph. 0413 971 736

Here’s something new, great and different

G’day I’m Nathan Swain, proud Beech Forest resident; I have just opened a brand new eco tour business Otway E Bikes

and will be conducting Electric Power Assisted Bicycle Tours on the “Old Beechy Rail Trail” from the Beech Forest

Recreation Reserve to the Ferguson Recreation Reserve and return. Tours will be of small guest numbers and will be

completely guided and instructed. This is a fantastic way to make more use and create awareness of the Old Beechy Rail

Trail to promote and protect this fantastic community asset. Otway E Bikes will work closely with the Friends of the Rail

Trail Committee and it’s members, assisting directly with beautification and weed control also facility and safety

improvements. The Colac Otway Shire and the Old Beechy Rail Trail committee of management both approve and offer

well wish’s for this exciting venture.

I invite any and all “locals” to call 0413 971 736 or email [email protected] with any queries,

questions or concerns or maybe would just like a look at one of these awesome bikes.

No Licence required The bikes ridden are Electric Power Assisted Bicycles, which are regulated and approved as a road legal BICYCLE by

VicRoads.

What’s an Electric Power Assisted Bicycle? Essentially, they are bicycle, with an electric motor to assist you peddling, they are silent and ride just like a “normal bike”

however the “Huff and Puff” known to all that have ridden a bicycle uphill or into a head wind, has been eliminated so you

can “breathe easy” enjoy all the good bits of cycling without all the sweat and hard work. Speeds achieved are equal to

that of a “normal bike”

Very special specials Otways residents bring along visiting family and friends this holiday season and you ride for free. This is a great way to

show off our beautiful area that makes us all proud. We have little trailers so as the little tackers can come along too.

Rates are very reasonable at $29 per person or $80 family of four for a 1 hour tour. We supply helmets Free of Charge.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Dear Editor,

It's Jingle Bells that does it! Takes me right back to Christmas at the Hordern Vale Hall. For the last 50 or so years the Hordern Vale and Glenaire community have been coming together to celebrate Christmas at the Hall. The evening followed a well honed routine. Tea in the supper room, always plenty of it, and you know how it is with the "ladies bring a plate" - lots of variety. Then the call to head out into the main hall to await Santa's arrival. Now there are two things about this part of the evening that never changed over all those years. Santa, of course, in his big red suit and a hearty ho-ho-ho, and the other - John Swain. Not with a hearty ho-ho-ho, but rather a hearty rendition of Jingle Bells. John always managed to time this outpouring of Christmas spirit just as Santa was about to make his entrance. Such was his enthusiasm that he would have the children singing along with him. John's role as Santa's helper was to ensure that each child received their gift from under the Christmas tree. Once the gifts were dispensed, and after the adults were in receipt of any remaining chocolates left in Santa's swag, Santa was sent on his way with another rousing rendition of Jingle Bells from John and the children. Santa, generally clutching a bottle of Johnny Walker to keep him warm on the long haul back to the North Pole. Those Christmas gatherings at the Hall were always a great time for the community to come together, not just to celebrate Christmas but that's just simply what communities do.

So, John Swain, thanks for the memories and have a Merry Christmas.

SHOT OVER THE BAR PRODUCTIONS

Our little production company would like to announce a project that we invite the whole Gellibrand Community to become involved in. It’s what we hope will become a TV show.

The idea is very simple – a TV show that will promote Gellibrand and the Otways. The key to this whole project is FUN. That and letting people into our country lifestyle, the history, the characters, the bush, loggers, farmers, tradies, machine operators and yes, alcohol will be involved & compulsory.

The show will be based around three very funny locals. We will not import a barmaid, as happily there are a few to be had around here. The Gellibrand River Hotel will feature in each episode. Our production team is planning to spend some time focusing on our main characters where it will all be improvised. After that there will be some sketches, fully fleshing out our main characters. These scenes will hopefully be rather comedic. After that the idea is to provide some history and information to the viewer about this incredible area.

We envision shooting a 30 min pilot programme as soon as we can.

To that end we invite everyone to participate. We are looking for camera people, sound technicians, lighting people, graphic artists, editing people, etc.

We are also looking for local people who would like to be in the TV show as cast members in various scenes.

We also appeal to anyone who has an idea about what they would like in the show; local history, local characters and above all else, anything that would be interesting.

This will be a non-profit endeavour, with whatever little it makes returning to the community.

Again – the aim of this project is FUN. We hope to make this little TV show with the support of all the Gellibrand Community. We hope to make it entirely with the efforts of this great community. If those who wish to be involved or have some great ideas (they will all be great ideas) please get in contact via:

Email – [email protected] Ph. – 5235 8499 (please call or leave a message before 3pm) Letter – 20 Old Main Rd, Gellibrand, 3239 or drop them off at the Gellibrand River Hotel.

It has been a fabulous year at the College and our final week is a time to celebrate and reflect on the many memorable times we have experienced together.

It has been a pleasure to welcome Tony Grayden to the College as our Assistant Principal this year. In just one year Tony has made an invaluable contribution. He has settled in and developed great relationships with the students, staff and community. Tony has led work on IT, curriculum and assessment and the development of international school partnerships. Together, Tony and I are developing a great working relationship that extends from strategic planning to helping Jenny with the cleaning.

A bloke’s work is never quite done The Year 6 Graduation Dinner was a spirited and most enjoyable evening. Our graduates, Heidi, Grace and Jaryd and their families and teacher had a great chance to celebrate this important milestone. Seeing the movies and photos that traced their lives from Prep was a highlight as were the fine speeches made by each of the students. Not to mention the pizza and ice creams were delicious.

Our students are busy preparing their final presentations and class parties. As staff we are completing reports and reflecting on our students’ learning and growth over the year. Preparation for our Awards Ceremony is well underway and we look forward to seeing all our school families on Thursday afternoon, December 17 and sharing many of the highlights of 2015.

Our senior students have completed their studies and I am delighted to announce that Amy Brauer and Jasmine Steen have shared the honour of Dux of 2015. My daughter, Ruby also completed her Year 12 and was very happy with her excellent results.

I am aware of the many challenges involved in the final school year and have been very impressed by the determination and commitment shown by all of our Year 12s. It has been a privilege to see our senior students all grow and mature over the year and I am very proud of them all.

Our excursion to Adventure Park was a great success and I would like to thank my staff for their great efforts to make the Activities program such a success.

Eve and our middle year students have been busily preparing our thank you meal for our many Volunteers, and I would like to thank our parents and community for their great support for the College. The lunch was a great success and the food was delicious.

Assistant cooks help to feed our volunteers

Basking in the botanic splendour of our garden environment, another year of transformation is drawing to a close at Lavers Hill P-12 College. Our wonderful students, parents and community members are gathering throughout this week to celebrate the plethora of achievements that have marked 2015 as the culmination of so much hard work, by so many people.

Under the leadership of our esteemed principal, Andrew Kohane, the vision of a genuinely nurturing learning environment driven by moral purpose has continued to take significant steps forward on many levels.

As I write we are surrounded by our students engaged in a range of activities from cooking for a community members lunch, gardening, playing an exotic array of musical instruments and exploring the very latest in digital technologies.

Everyday we see the positive impact on young people that a truly collaborative environment can have. It is one where students, parents, teachers and community members work with a shared sense of purpose and driven by a code of integrity and compassion.

We are looking forward with great anticipation to 2016 when we will embrace every opportunity to continue to foster Lavers Hill P-12 College as a community of learners.

Along with all my staff and their families, I am looking forward to a well-earned Christmas vacation. I will have a chance to be both in Melbourne and have my family stay over the summer at my beautiful home in Johanna. My wife and daughters will join me here, along with Jazzy our dog, who is already well acquainted with the students of Lavers Hill.

It has been a most rewarding and enjoyable year at the College. Memorable moments from the year can be revisited through the pages of the 2015 Nioka.

Looking forward to our final week of the year. Andrew Kohane

Special thanks to Mrs. Doherty and Miss Speirs and Rylan for their help.

DINO RUN by Ryan Gr. 4 “QUICK RUN away from the Mattysaurus gang he’s going to make us become his gang”, said Ryziesaurus. “GET IN the castle QUICK before we get captured”, said Williamsaurus. “OPEN the gate QUICK”, said Sophiesaurus. “When we get in there we will get the queen to get an army to attack Mattysaurus” said Ellasaurus. “WE’RE IN, SHUT THE GATE NOW”!” “Guys let’s go and talk to the king”. “OK” they all said. They all went to see the king but he wasn’t there. They all looked and looked but he couldn’t be found. “OH NO HE’S BEEN KINGNAPPED” said Ryziesaurus. “Who will be our leader now” said Ellasaurus. “I WILL” said Ryziesaurus and away they went to find the king.

Here are another two entries in the Otway Light’s 2015 Judy Sandercock Competition. One Day in the Life of “The Bar” by Jean Towers The mouth of the Aire River has been a problem over the years, many engineers have looked at how to stop the river from becoming blocked, and some attempts were made to help, but to no avail. When the sea was rough there was a bar- especially in the summer when the water wasn’t running so strongly. You could always predict it would happen at Easter because of the tides, moon etc. fixing the problem could be quite technical.

When this happened the Hordern Vale and Glen Aire flats were flooded and if not cleared fairly quickly, the grass either rotted or was spoiled by the swans, then the cows wouldn’t eat it and that was their main source of food.

This particular day in 1946, my father Earl Marriner, who always organized the locals to come and let the bar go when the sea was calm enough, rang all the neighbours who helped, to say the conditions were right. They all arrived down at the mouth of the Aire River with their draft horses harnessed ready for work. Attaching the traces to a scoop, which was usually left in the sand dunes, they all commenced work- backwards and forwards they went, each time coming up with a scoop full of sand, flicking it over to empty, then back again.

That day, as they had to leave home so early, I was asked to take dad’s lunch down to him. Saddling my pony, Trixie, I collected the lunch bag and rode from Hordern Vale to where they were working, enjoying the view on the way of the three lakes-Lakes Calder, Craven and Hordern, and could see the extent of the flood- wasn’t so bad that we couldn’t go to school, but was a significant flood.

Stopping in the sand dune where the men left their gear, I tied Trixie to a tree, leaving my coat on the saddle; I collected the lunch bag and set off to where the men were working. They were pleased to see me- after a while they all stopped for lunch. I stayed and talked until they were ready to go back to work, then set off back to my pony to go home. On arriving, I saw my coat on the ground, so went to pick it up. Trixie must have been asleep and possibly a bit deaf, sensed something behind her and gave an almighty kick! Thankfully I was upright by then, and she caught me up above the knee and broke my femur.

I called out but felt no one would hear me as this was some distance away, so dragged myself up to the top of the sand dune and called. My father and some of the men came to see what the trouble was. This was quite a dilemma – how were they going to get me to help as this was three kilometres to the nearest road over loose sand! My cousin Stuart Marriner had set off on horseback to ride to the nearest phone where he rang his wife Jean who was a nurse. She organised the car with the back seats removed so there was a flat area to lie on.

Meanwhile these resourceful men got to work- they collected their spades which were used to finish the last of the drain they were digging to the sea, and wire netting which was always kept down there for when the river was let go. That was their reward for all the hard work to be able to all stand in the ever quickening stream, with the netting from one side to the other. The fish were always there, waiting to swim out to sea as soon as the river flowed once again. Everyone would catch them in their hands and throw them up on the bank to later pick up and take their reward home!

With the spades they threaded their handles through the netting from each end, onto which they placed their coats, then me!

I take my hat off to those able bodied men who trudged through this loose sand in the heat. No wonder they had to stop and rest several times. This I hated, as it was very painful every time I went up and down- it seemed to take ages, but finally arrived at the waiting car, and was transported to Colac, another two hours, it was evening when we arrived.

Meanwhile the men finally let the river go, some by then feeling rather cold as the evening descended, because they had sent their coats ahead with me. This day at “The Bar” I will never forget.

My Dream Job by Matariki Gr.5 When I leave School, I am going to be a motorbike builder. Each motorbike will have turbo on them so they go faster. I am going to sell them from my house for one million dollars. The shop’s name will be Matabike’s and the shop will be in Gellibrand. The motorbikes will have a button on them that makes them go across water. Instead of petrol, they will have solar panels on them. My next door neighbour will make me a big motocross track so we can ride all day and jump over the ramps he builds. All the bikes will be able to go off-road and on-road so people can ride them around the Otways.

Contractors will start resurfacing the floor of Bluewater’s aquatic area this week to improve underfoot grip in the pedestrian areas around the pools. The

pool hall will remain open during the work, with spaces to be cordoned off in the immediate area where resurfacing is taking place. Chief Executive Officer Sue Wilkinson said slip resistance testing had revealed the floor needed to be resurfaced. “In the main pedestrian areas of Bluewater we have rubber mats in place as a temporary solution, and we ask that our customers use the mats to move around the pool deck in bare feet. “There are some floor areas at the north end of the pool hall that do not have rubber matting, and in those areas people must wear thongs or shoes.” Ms Wilkinson said the team at Bluewater were working with the contractors to minimise any disruptions to patrons. “Most of the work will take place after hours. We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this work.”
