Manage Congestion Impacts / Adjust Commuting Habits
• Avoid traveling during peak periods
• Use alternative modes of transportation such as transit, cycling, walking
• Carpool
• Embrace technology in the workplace (e.g. Teleconference)
• Consider alternative work arrangements (e.g. Work from home)
• Allow extra travel time especially during morning commute
• Plan your trip ahead of time and be informed (travel apps (OttawaNav), Twitter, web links, media messaging, etc.)
29
Back to School – Road Safety
• Watch for pedestrians and reduce your speed in school zones.
• Always stop for school buses when signals are flashing.
• Wear reflective gear to be visible at night to other road users. Ensure all bikes are fitted with a bell, light and reflective tape.
• Wear a helmet and protect yourself from head injuries. ‘Just Wear It!’
• Share the Road and ensure the safety of all road users.
• Reminder to all road users to slow down and move over for emergency vehicles. New legislation also requires the same for tow trucks.
30
New for 2016 - Pedestrian Crossovers
• Introduced by MTO in January 2016.
• Crossovers are pedestrian crossings marked with specific signs and roadway markings.
• May also include flashing beacons.
• When pedestrians are present at a Crossover, all drivers, including cyclists, must stop and yield the right of way until pedestrians have completely crossed the road.
• Drivers and cyclists will be fined $150 - $500 with 3 demerit points for non compliance.
