V i c t i m s r a n g e d i n age f r o m 1 6 t o 6 6 y e a r s a n d c o n s t i t u t e d a w i d e range o f s o c i o e c o n o m i c a n d e t h n i c b a c k -g r o u n d s . D o m e s t i c v i o l e n c e o f t e n r e s u l t e d i n severe i n j u r y ; 2 8 M o f t h e women i n t e r v i e w e d r e q u i r e d a d m i s s i o n t o h o s p i t a lf o r i n j u r i e s , a n d 13o r e q u i r e d m a j o r s u r g i c a l t r e a t m e n t . T h e t y p i c a l p r e s e n t a t i o n wa s i n j u r i e s t o t h e f a c e , s k u l l , e y e s ,e x t r e m i t i e s , a n d upper t o r s o . A t h i r d o f t h e c a s e s i n v o l v e d a weapon, s u c h a s a k n i f e , c l u b , or g u n . I n a l l , 1 00 M o f t h e v i c t i m swere p r e g n a n t a t t h e t i m e o f a b u s e , a n d 1 0% r e p o r t e d t h a t t h e i r c h i l d r e n h a d a l s o b e e n a b u s e d b y t h e b a t t e r e r . M o s tv i c t i m s ( 8 6 % ) h a d s u f f e r e d a t l e a s t on e p r e v i o u s i n c i d e n t o f a b u s e , a n d a b o u t 40% h a d p r e v i o u s l y r e q u i r e d m e d i c a l care f o ra b u s e . F o r t h e v a s t m a j o r i t y o f t h e v i c t i m s , t h e i n c i d e n t w a s n o tt h e f i r s t e p i s o d e o f a b u s e i n t h e i r r e l a t i o n s h i p . A t l e a s t o n ep r e v i o u s e p i s o d e o f a b u s e w a s r e p o r t e d b y 8 6 % o f t h e v i c -t i m s , 4 0 % h a d r e q u i r e d m e d i c a l a t t e n t i o n f o r a b u s e i n t h ep a s t , a n d 1 3 % h a d r e q u i r e d h o s p i t a l a d m i s s i o n f o r p r e v i o u sa b u s e . V i c t i m s f r e q u e n t l y r e q u i r e d r a d i o g r a p h i c s t u d -i e s ( 4 1 % ) , s t i t c h e s o r c a s t i n g ( 2 5 % ) , a n d m e d i c a t i o n s ( 2 7 % ) .S o m e h a d l o s s o f c o n s c i o u s n e s s ( 1 1 % ) o r p e r m a n e n t i n j u r y( d i s f i g u r e m e n t , h e a r i n g l o s s , o r v i s u a l i m p a i r m e n t ; 5 % ) r e -s u l t i n g f r o m t h e a b u s i v e e p i s o d e . A b u s e o c c u r r e damong women o f a l l races, a n d t h e p o s s i b i l i t y o f d o m e s t i cv i o l e n c e as t h e cause o f i n j u r y i n women s h o u l d b e c o n s i d -e r e d , r e g a r d l e s s o f e t h n i c b a c k g r o u n d or age.S e v e r a l a u t h o r s h a v e s u g g e s t e d t h a t b a t t e r e d women mayr e m a i n i n an a b u s i v e r e l a t i o n s h i p b e c a u s e o f f i n a n c i a l d e p e n -d e n c e on t h e b a t t e r e r . 2 ' 1 " I n our s t u d y , o n l y 7% o f v i c t i m swere d e p e n d e n t s o l e l y on t h e i r a t t a c k e r f o r f i n a n c i a l support.A b o u t a t h i r d o f v i c t i m s were e m p l o y e d a n d t h u s h a d somef i n a n c i a l a b i l i t y t o l e a v e s u c h a r e l a t i o n s h i p . T h i s s u g g e s t st h a t f o r some women, o t h e r reasons, s u c h as f e a r o f i n j u r y orp s y c h o l o g i c a l d e p e n d e n c e , d e t e r t h e m f r o m l e a v i n g an a b u -s i v e r e l a t i o n s h i p .

Most i n t e r v e n t i o n e f f o r t s ar e a i m e d a t s e p a r a t i n g ana b u s e d woman f r o m h e r b a t t e r e r . P h y s i c a l s e p a r a t i o n f r o mt h e b a t t e r e r , h o w e v e r , d i d n o t e n s u r e p r o t e c t i o n f o r our s u b -j e c t s . F u l l y a t h i r d o f t h e v i c t i m s i n our s t u d y were n o t l i v i n gw i t h t h e i r a s s a i l a n t s a t t h e t i m e o f t h e i n d e x e p i s o d e , suggest-i n g t h a t v i c t i m s o f d o m e s t i c v i o l e n c e n e e d b e t t e r p o l i c e a n dj u d i c i a l p r o t e c t i o n a f t e r l e a v i n g t h e a b u s i v e r e l a t i o n s h i p .

D o m e s t i c v i o l e n c e i s a source o f c o n s i d e r a b l e mor-b i d i t y - 2 8 % o f ou r v i c t i m s were a d m i t t e d t o h o s p i t a l f o rt h e i r i n d e x i n j u r y , a n d 1 3 % r e q u i r e d m a j o r s u r g i c a l t r e a t -ment. I n a d d i t i o n , our r e s u l t s a n d t h o s e o f p r e v i o u s s t u d -i e s ' 9'0 suggest t h a t t h e number o f a b u s e e p i s o d e s mayi n c r e a s e d u r i n g pr egnancy. Emergency d e p a r t m e n t per son-n e l a n d p r i m a r y care p r o v i d e r s s h o u l d b e aware o f t h i s asso-c i a t i o n a n d i n q u i r e a b o u t d o m e s t i c v i o l e n c e i n pregnantwomen w i t h i n j u r i e s . C h i l d a b u s e b y t h e b a t t e r e r was com-monly r e p o r t e d i n our s t u d y , s u g g e s t i n g t h a t m e d i c a l pro-v i d e r s s h o u l d a l s o i n q u i r e a b o u t c h i l d a b u s e i n t h i s s e t t i n g .

O ur f i n d i n g s c o n f i r m reports t h a t d o m e s t i c v i o l e n c e i s arecurrent p r o b l e m . 2 I n our s t u d y , 86% o f t h e v i c t i m s h a db e e n a b u s e d b e f o r e , a n d a l m o s t 40% h a d p r e v i o u s l y r e q u i r e dm e d i c a l a t t e n t i o n f o r a b u s e . Women wh o a r e v i c t i m s o fr e p e a t e d v i o l e n c e i n t h e home may go on t o h a v e c h r o n i cm e d i c a l a n d p s y c h o l o g i c a l d i s o r d e r s , s u c h a s d e p r e s s i o n ora l c o h o l a n d d r u g a b u s e . These c h r o n i c p r o b l e m s are u s u a l l yt h e f i n a l stage i n a syndrome o f b a t t e r i n g , p r e c e d e d b y nu-merous p r e s e n t a t i o n s f o r t h e medical treatment o f i n j u r i e s ;o u t p a t i e n t c l i n i c v i s i t s f o r vague c o m p l a i n t s ; a n d l a b e l i n g as an e u r o t i c , h y s t e r i c , or h y p o c h o n d r i a c .
