P salm 100 (KJV) Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. 2 Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing. 3 Know ye that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. 4 Enter into his gates with thanks-giving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. 5 For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.
It is appropriate that Psalm 100 is about joy and serving our Heavenly Father. When we started this business, we did so with God at the head, and with a heart for serving Him and the Paulding Community. Our Town will always be His magazine first and we know this is why we are here today with our Centennial edition.
Through every page of the last 100 issues God has taught us great lessons in faith and given us tremendous blessings. To date we have had 417 wonderful people of Paulding County on our cover; each one has become a welcomed member of the Our Town family.
The core values of Our Town have not wavered in these past eight years. We have grown in the community and have a love of promoting non-profit groups and spon-soring special county-wide events. Though all the successes and struggles, we give God all the praise and glory.
In September 2009 we began printing in all gloss pages when we introduced our first annual High School Football Issue. Later we began featuring the Paulding County Teacher of the Year, Paulding High School Baseball and the Theater programs. It has been an honor to meet so many wonderful families, students, business owners and special charitable groups in the community. Paulding County is a better place because of her people.
Our number one question is, “How does someone get on the cover?” The answer is through nominations only. We have never sold our covers for profit; they have always been about the people of Paulding. If you know a deserving family or group with a wonderful story that should be shared with our community, we encourage you to nominate them by sending us an email at [email protected].
We are extremely grateful to all those who have supported us: our loyal advertisers, the fabulous folks at the Paulding Chamber of Commerce, our families and friends, and YOU our readers.
Our Town looks forward to what the future holds and we believe God has great things in store. He has already poured out His blessing and grace upon us, and we are hum-bled.
We wish you all the best in this New Year - 2016! God Bless you All!

here can be many benefits to researching your family tree, from the satisfaction of knowing where you came from and hopefully learning a little more about yourself, to being able to leave your legacy to your children and other rela-
tives who will be continuing the family line. There could also be some big surprises awaiting you when you trace back your family history - so you should be prepared to discover both the good and bad.
The more information you have about your ancestors before you begin your family tree research, the better your chances will be of uncovering even more. A collection of names and ambiguous photographs may not get you very far, especially if your fam-ily name is a relatively common one where you live, but if you know more personal details about certain people - such as their profession, where they lived and whether they served in a war - this could instantly open up new avenues of investigation.
Researching your family tree today is now easier and more convenient than ever, thanks to the internet. Dedicated genealogy websites offer members access to a wealth of data, including census records and birth, marriage and death indexes, though you will usually need to sign up and pay a membership fee to access these services. Online forums centered on genealogy can also be great places to share the fruits of your labors with other family historians, and to pick up tips and find out about more resources available to help you.
If you believe your family has lived in the same area for at least several generations, you could also find important information by searching at your local library or coun-cil buildings for census records and birth, marriage and death certificates. Speaking to people who may have worked with your ancestors or known them personally could also help you find out more about their personalities, their interests and any poten-tial leads to help you uncover more information.
Researching your family tree can be a worthwhile and satisfying pastime, and a great gift for other people in your family who may be similarly interested in your shared heritage. However, you should also be prepared for a challenging and often frus-trating time, and may need to accept that some areas of your family tree will remain shrouded in mystery. Just as some people today choose to limit their online presence in an increasingly networked world, your ancestors may have desired similar privacy.

elcome to 2016. My hope for all of you is that this coming year is exceptional
and filled with joy. Each new year offers the hope and promise of a new beginning. The tradition of making New Year’s resolutions is linked to the sense of “fresh start” that comes with a new year and the practice has a long history. The Babylonians pledged to return borrowed objects and repay debts at the start of each year, while the Romans kicked off January by making a vow to the god Janus (where the word January is rooted).
According to a YouGov survey, 63% of Americans make New Year’s resolutions; and losing weight, getting fitter and eating healthier were the most popular goals set in 2015. Overall, the success rate for resolutions is not impressive. However, it is clear that those who make resolutions have more success for change than those who forgo the tradition.
Changing bad habits and creating positive habits is not easy. Psychologists assert for behavior change to occur, a person must have the capability, opportunity and motivation to make the change happen. However, too often resolutions are made somewhat reflexively without a clear process to determine if the change is something desired by internal rather than external motivations.
An interesting twist on the traditional New Year’s resolution is to make this process one that involves the entire family. This can become a yearly family tradition. My daughter married into a family that has done this for decades. Each January, the family gathers to reflect on the past year; discussing accomplishments and goals, as individuals and as a family. In the resolution conversation there is a review of what worked and what didn’t in the past year, and a declaration of the goals and resolutions for the upcoming year. In this family where everyone is an adult, there is a competitiveness attached where “a winner” is declared based on the successful accomplishment from the past year’s resolutions. This is a bonding and collaborative way to bring the efforts of growth and change into the support of the family.
Obviously, this family discussion changes and adapts over the years. A family with young children will not have the same discussion as one with independent adult children.
W
relationships
However, the overall process is the same and the positive impacts are valuable.
Dr. Benjamin Siegel, professor of pediatrics and psychiatry at Boston University School of Medicine proposes that even with young children resolutions can be a positive experience. He advocates that it is generally helpful for parents of younger children to start the discussion and it is helpful that the goals for the coming year should be written down; and the goals should be age appropriate for each family member. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends resolutions for preschool-aged children should focus on cleaning up toys, brushing teeth, washing hands, and being kind to pets.
Resolutions also could include efforts to improve listening and helping skills. As a child reaches elementary school age, he or she will be more able to understand a resolution and participate more in the process of picking goals for the coming year. Into adolescence, focus shifts taking more responsibility for actions, self-care, and helping others.
Over the year the family can meet to review personal progress towards resolutions. This is a healthy process that provides opportunities to reinforce the value in accepting responsibility for making life changes. When a goal is met, there is a powerful sense of accomplishment, which will improve self-esteem and fosters a sense of personal achievement. This is so important….at all ages!

ome should be your ref-uge, the place where you feel safest and can breathe
easy. But what if the air inside your home is stuffy,
stale or just down-right dirty? Poor indoor air quali-ty is common in American house-holds, and if your
home has bad air, it could be affecting
your health.
Indoor pollutant levels can be sig-nificantly higher than outdoor lev-
els, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. What’s more, the
EPA notes, because most homes have multiple sources of indoor
air pollution, the cumulative effect of all that pollution can lead to health problems. The problems may show up immediately or take years to emerge, the EPA says, and can include respiratory problems, eye and throat irrita-tion, headaches, dizziness and fatigue.
Here are some common sources of indoor air pollution and solutions to improve the air inside your home:
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)Thousands of products give off VOCs, and the concentra-tion of VOCs can be up to 10 times higher indoors than outside, the EPA says. Inside the home, paint, furniture and cleaning supplies are among the top sources of VOCs.
To reduce the presence of VOCs in your home, choose low- or no-VOC paints for home improvement projects. If you’ve recently purchased furniture or had new car-peting installed, be sure to use good ventilation - open windows and run ventilation fans to help evacuate VOCs. Choose cleansers made from organic formulations, rath-er than chemicals.
DustDust and dirt in your home don’t just look bad, they can cause respiratory and eye irritation, and make certain conditions - like asthma and allergies - even worse. The “dust” in your home contains a host of irritants besides simple dirt, including animal dander and hair, dust mites, insect debris, pollen, spores and more.
Vacuuming is one of the most effective ways to reduce dust and dirt in your home, but be aware that some vac-uums can pull dust off the floor and exhaust it back into the air. Even uprights with HEPA filters can’t capture and retain all pollutants. A central vacuum system can do a better job of removing contaminants from your home.
H
home improvement
For example, the NuTone PurePower Series Central Vacuums capture debris and other micro-particles and exhaust them directly outside your home, rather than recirculating dust and dirt back into the indoor air. By eliminating 99.97 percent of micro particles, the central vacuum helps improve indoor air quality. Visit www.nutone.com/purepower.
FumesA number of appliances in your home can give off nox-ious fumes like carbon monoxide, from a malfunctioning gas log fireplace or a kerosene space heater to a faulty central furnace. Depending on the kind of emission, these fumes can cause illness and even be lethal.
To minimize risks, keep all gas appliances in good repair. Have furnaces, heaters and fireplaces inspected at least once a year by a professional and be sure any appliance that burns fuel, such as a gas dryer or stove, properly vents outside the home. Install a carbon monoxide detector in your home; many states, counties and munic-ipalities now require them in new construction.
From installing a central vacuum system and CO detector to avoiding products that produce harmful emissions, you can do a lot to improve the quality of the air inside your home.

he countdown is over, 2016 is here. If you’re like many people, you might be mulling over some New Year’s resolutions, such as hitting the gym more, learn-ing a new language or taking a cooking class. All are worthy goals, but why not
add some financial resolutions as well?
For example….
Pay yourself first. Even if you aren’t living “paycheck to paycheck,” you proba-bly don’t have much trouble spending your money – because there’s always some-thing that you or a family member needs, always a repair required for your home or your car, always one more bill to pay. But if you are going to achieve your long-term goals, such as a comfortable retirement, you need to invest consistently. So before you pay everyone else, pay yourself first by having some money automatically moved from your checking or savings account each month into an investment.
Take advantage of your opportunities. If you have a 401(k) or similar plan at work, take full advantage of it. Contribute as much as you can afford – or at least enough to earn your employer’s match, if one is offered – and choose the mix of investments that give you the potential to achieve the growth you need at a level of risk with which you are comfortable.
Focus on the long term. In the short term, you might be excused for not wanting to invest. The headlines are typically scary, the financial markets are frequently vol-atile and the future often looks murky. Yet, if you can look past the uncertainties of today and keep your focus on tomorrow, you will find it easier to follow a disci-plined investment strategy that gives you the opportunity to meet your long-term goals, such as a comfortable retirement.
Don’t be driven by fear. When the market is down, investors tend to react with fear. Specifically, they rush to sell their investments, afraid that if they don’t “cut their losses,” they might sustain even bigger ones. If you can get past this feeling, you may find that a down market can offer you the chance to buy quality investments at good prices.
Forget about the “hot stocks.” You’ll hear friends, co-workers and talking heads on television tout today’s “hot stocks.” But by the time you might hear about them, they may have cooled off – and, in any case, they might not be appropriate for your needs. Forget about “getting rich quick in the market” – it probably won’t happen. True investment success requires patience and persistence.
Cut down on your debts. It’s easy to pile up debts, but a lot harder getting rid of them. Yet, if you can reduce your debt load even moderately, you’ll free up money you could use to invest. So look for ways to conserve, cut back and consolidate – it will be worth the effort.
Making these resolutions – and sticking to them – can help you as you work toward achieving your financial goals. This article was contributed by Roberto De Jesus of Edward Jones Investments - Dallas/Acworth - 678-574-5166

isions of turkey, stuffing, and holiday pies and cookies often motivate people to rev
up their fitness programs this time of year. New Year’s resolutions are made and many start thinking of ways to lose weight or get back in shape. An effective fitness program is more than aerobic training and strength building. To reap the full benefits of exercise, you need to add flexibility to the mix.
Stretching can help your body get ready for exercise. It is also an essential part of recovering from aerobic activity. With every type of exercise there should be a warm up and cool down. Incorporate stretching to ensure greater flexibly and to reduce injuries during your workout.
A good warm up prepares your body for more intense activity. It gets your blood flow-ing, raises muscle temperature, and increases your breathing rate. Adding stretches to your warm up may improve your exercise performance. Once your muscles are warm, spend a few minutes on stretching. Since the goal of your warm up is to increase your heart rate and prepare for more intense work, choose stretches that can be done standing up.
Just as a warm up optimizes your body for exercise, an effective cool down gives your body time to recover. Your cool down begins as you gradually decrease your intensity level at the end of your aerobic exercise session. Walk at a comfortable pace until your breathing and heart rate have returned to normal. Once you are breathing easily, stretch while your muscles are still warm.
By increasing your flexibility you can improve your ability to move around. You will have less muscle tension and your posture will likely improve. Most importantly, stretching after each workout reduces your risk for injury. Here are some stretching exercises recommended by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons:
s Quadricep Hold the top of your left foot with right hand and gently pull heel toward buttocks. Repeat with other leg.
s Calf Stand close to a solid support, and lean on it with your forearms, head resting on hands. Bend one leg and place your foot on the ground in front of you, with the other leg straight behind. Slowly move your hips forward, keeping your lower back flat.
s Hip and Groin Place one leg forward, while your knee of the other leg is resting on the floor. Without changing the position of the knee on the floor or the forward leg, lower the front of your hip downward.
s Hamstring Sit down and straighten your left leg. The sole of your right foot should rest next to the inside of your straightened leg. Lean forward from your hips and reach toward your foot. Keep your left foot upright with the ankle and toes relaxed. Repeat with right leg.
s Upper body In a standing or sitting position, interlace your fingers. With your palms facing upward, push your arms slightly back and up.
s Tricep With your arms overhead, hold the elbow of one arm with the hand of your other arm. Gently pull the elbow behind your arm.
s Shoulder Gently pull your elbow across your chest toward your opposite shoulder.
s Lower Back Tighten your hip muscles and at the same time, tighten your abdominal muscles to flatten your lower back. Hold for 5 to 8 seconds, then relax. Repeat two or three times.

gardening
New Year brings new opportunities. Maybe one of your resolutions was to improve your lawn and
garden. Where do your start and what can you do in January that will get you started?
You might be surprised by the amount of important work you can do to improve your garden in the winter. Top of the list is a soil test in your garden for soil pH and fertility. This is a great winter chore to make sure you are providing a good soil base for all you are trying to grow. You can use UGA Extension soil test recommendations to help cultivate a healthy lawn and garden. Not only will following these recommendations help your plants look better, but they will help prevent excessive nutrients from entering ground water and streams in Paulding County.
Plan for the coming gardening year. Look around your garden and determine what projects you would like to tackle for the year. Are you interested in creating a pollinator garden? Is it time to add an addi-tional raised bed vegetable garden? Do you want an outdoor entertaining space in the garden? Now is a good time to begin garden construction projects, so they will be ready to put to use in the spring.
Winter is also the perfect time to prune. If your plants out grew their space last year, now is the time to prune them back to size. Shrubs that should be pruned at this time of year include: Crape myrtle, Beautyberry, Japanese Barberry, Boxwood, Rose-of-Sharon, Nandina, Grandiflora Roses, and Fragrant Tea Olive. Exceptions to the late winter/early spring pruning rule are spring flowering shrubs whose flowers are set the summer before, such as azaleas, hydrangeas, and forsythia, which should not be pruned until after they have flowered. So hold off on pruning the azaleas, unless you do not mind losing your flower buds for the spring!
Another good winter task is to order seeds for your spring garden. Seed catalogs are available at this time of year and you will find the best selection early. Choose seeds for plants you know will add color, texture and interest to your garden. You can even start many perennial plants from seed beginning in January in preparation for the warmer spring months.
Composting is also a great winter garden activity. Many of the items you throw into your trash can be sorted out and composted in your own back yard. The benefits of this go beyond just reducing your waste. Compost can be used to improve your garden soil and make your landscape and vegetable garden more productive. With a little organization and a designated space, you can make your own soil amendment by composting.
Finally - Feed the birds! Winter is long and it’s not easy for our feathered friends to make a living in the cold. Consider a suet feeder or seed feeder. Don’t forget to give them a nice clean supply of fresh water, as well. Birds in winter are one of the most fantastic garden ornaments, and now is great time to invite them to your garden.

LET ME MESMERIZE YOU WITH MY GORGEOUS EYES! ove over, Rover. While dogs have long been considered the most popular pet in the United States, cats are a pet of choice for many in the millennial gen-eration, according to research conducted earlier this year by Nestlé Purina.
Close to half of 1,000 survey respondents in the millennial age range (18 to 34) say they own cats, and many believe their cat is similar to themselves. Many millennials consider themselves independent, yet social. Fifty-seven percent of millennial cat owners say their cat is as important in their lives as their friends, two in five consider their cat to be their new “best friend” and nearly 50 percent say they tell their cat secrets no one else knows.
According to the Pet Food Institute the U.S. pet cat population is more than 73 mil-lion - or two million more than the U.S. pet dog population. Perhaps it’s true what Sigmund Freud once said, “Time spent with cats is never wasted.”
More than 80 percent of millennial cat owners agree one of the main reasons they own a cat is their cat fits in well with their current lifestyle; perhaps because two-thirds of their cats stay entirely indoors.
“People like cats because they are great pets - they provide comfort to their own-ers and with appropriate socialization they can be warm and friendly,” said Purina behaviorist Sandra Lyn. “In addition, they don’t need to be taken on walks or for bathroom breaks and they’re generally happy doing their own thing, though they do like attention and cuddling.”
“The relationship between pets and people is continuing to evolve,” noted Lyn. “Through research and personal experience, the bond between pets and people can be viewed as an important part of improving quality of life.”
It’s unclear whether the preponderance of cat videos (and the popularity of “celebrity cats” such as Grumpy Cat) in digital media has affected the political correctness of being attached to one’s cat, but nearly three in five millennial cat owners surveyed by Purina consider themselves as “cat ladies” or “cat men.” In fact, two in five millennial cat owners talk about their pets on social media, three in five have watched cat videos and half have shared cat memes.
In general, those identifying as “cat people” are 11% more apt to have an “open” personality than “dog people”, meaning they tend to be curious, creative, artistic and more apt to be non-traditional thinkers, says research by WebMD. Further, Purina found 88% of millennial cat owners consider themselves similar to their cats. Forty percent describe their lifestyle as independent, and 72% see themselves as friendly - with 46% motivated to own cats because they’re also friendly.
For more information about the bond between pets and people, visit www.better withpets.com.
Editor’s note: Purina’s online study about millennials was conducted among 1,000 subjects ages 18 to 34 in the United States between Oct. 16 and 22, 2015. The research firm was Penn Schoen Berland of Washington, D.C.

ho doesn’t love food? It’s a great way to bring people together, whether it’s for a holiday celebration, a party with friends or family gathering after church on Sunday. In 2016 we will highlight some of the national and inter-
national food holidays that could be part of your next gathering.
Since the weather is typically cold, it makes sense the foods we celebrate in January are usually ones that warm us from the inside out on those chilly days.
January - National Soup MonthOn a cold day, there is nothing better than a bowl of homemade soup to warm us up or make us feel better.
Unstuffed Pepper Soup Recipe Serves 101-1/2 pounds ground beef3 large green peppers, chopped1 large onion, chopped2 cans (14-1/2 ounces each) beef broth2 cans (10-3/4 ounces each) condensed tomato soup, undiluted1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes, undrained1 can (4 ounces) mushroom stems and pieces, drained1-1/2 cups cooked rice
In a Dutch oven or large saucepan, cook the beef, green peppers and onion over medium heat until meat is no longer pink; drain. Stir in the broth, soup, tomatoes and mushrooms. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for at least 30 min-utes, stirring occasionally. Add rice and heat through.
January - National Oatmeal MonthAccording to Gone-to-pott.com, more oatmeal is eaten in January than in any other month. But for some, oatmeal is an acquired taste. It’s a wonderful energy boost and stays with you for hours to come on cold, frosty mornings. My favorite is the steel cut oatmeal with a little brown sugar and pecans. But, if you’re in a rush, try Starbucks Perfect Oatmeal. It really is just that....perfect!
Another way to eat your oats is a yummy oatmeal cookie. There are so many varia-tions but this is my favorite!
Precious Oatmeal Cookies
