Product DescriptionHouse 4 House’s MissionHouse 4 House strongly believes that in order to tackle the social and environmental issues facing the world today we need to inspire the builders of tomorrow. House 4 House’s mission is simple: to teach children about sustainability through their house building kits and help build a real house for every toy house sold.

How do we do this?House 4 house is a collection of toy construction kits inspired by different ways of building from across the world and made from Cradle to Cradle Certified materials. House 4 House challenges the typical ‘pitched roof dolls house’ design whilst allowing children to explore their creative potential. Each kit comes with a set of miniature building materials, characters, furniture and guides to enable children to build their own little houses. When it’s time for a change, the starch-based mortar is simply washed off and the miniature materials can be used again.

Reinvesting in Real Life Building ProjectsHouse 4 House has partnered with a microfinance charity so the profit from each kit sold is invested into real life building projects. Using House 4 House’s ‘Care’ncy platform, each child can log into our website and invest the money from their set into micro projects across the world and read about the people behind them.

Miniature Building MaterialsSets of miniature building materials, including clay bricks, roofing, doors and windows as well as furniture and characters.

Building GuidesGuides explain different ways to put the sets together, where and who the designs were inspired by and sustainable design principles.

Online ‘Care’ncy PlatformA simple online platform connects children with our microloan partners. Each set comes with a code that allows kids to lend money to real life projects.

Help Build Real ProjectsMicroloans help those in need to access building materials and supplies. Borrowers send regular updates via the online platform and once the money is repaid it can be reinvested.

House 4 House KitEach kit provides children with a set of materials to build and create their own miniature houses whilst helping others build their own real houses too.

House 4 House aims to improve the well-being, education and prosperity of all involved in its value chain from its manufacturers to the end consumer, whilst also using profits to help support those in need.

ManufacturingNearly all components in the set are manufactured using Cradle to Cradle Certified materials. The aim is that over time, the manufacturing of the components is set up in low income communities to create sustainable jobs, where everyone is paid fairly and can work in a safe and healthy environment. No harmful chemicals or processes are used in their manufacture.

‘Care’ncyUpon purchase, 20% of the product’s value is donated to our partner microfinance charity, who will be selected on the basis that they work with low income communities in need of microloans for construction purposes. Using a code inside the box, children can log onto our online platform where their money shows up as ‘Carency’ tokens, which they can invest in different real life building projects. Each project has a small description of what it is. If you invest you will receive updates and photos of its progress. What’s more is that once the loan is repaid kids can then reinvest in more projects.

Learning Through PlayHouse 4 House encourages children to learn about Cradle to Cradle design through play. Each component is made of Cradle to Cradle Certified materials. Guides explain the environmental benefits of these materials using easy to understand language, whilst also teaching the children about passive and sustainable design ideas. Most importantly each set provides the flexibility for children to explore their creative potential.

End of LifeHouse 4 House kits can be reused multiple times or sent back to House 4 House where they are donated to children’s charities. Each kit is made almost entirely of biodegradable materials so once the product has reached its end of life it can be composted whilst the remaining materials, including the C2C Certified packaging, are recyclable.

Materials in the SetHouse 4 House uses natural, Cradle to Cradle materials to ensure a product that supports the circular economy buts also engages children with the question of why materials matter; something that is increasingly rare in the plastic dominated toy industry.

Using Natural MaterialsMaterials have been chosen that perform highly on the Cradle to Cradle Certification categories (Material Health, Material Reutilization, Renewable Energy, Water Stewardship, and Social Fairness). Natural materials like Clay Brick and Accoya Wood make up the majority of each set and have a C2C material health of Gold or above, are biodegradable and require relatively little energy and water to produce. Bamboo can also have a positive environmental effect, absorbing carbon dioxide, releasing oxygen and it’s root systems help retain water in the soil.

Materials for Social FairnessThe long term aim is to use materials that promote social fairness in their manufacturing, requiring relatively little resources and expertise to work with and providing jobs to promote social and economic security for low income communities. Getting children to engage with these materials through play creates an opportunity for learning about sustainability and foster innovative solutions for the future.

Building Blocks | Clay Brick “Porotherm” | C2C Silver | (48%)Porotherm Clay Bricks are both safe to childrens use, achieving Gold level in Material Health, whilst being strong and durable for play. Once the starch mortar is washed off the clay bricks can be reused many times.

Frames & Openings | Accoya Wood | C2C Gold | (18%) Frames and openings are made from Accoya Wood, which is modified using a technique called acetylation, giving it the properties that match or exceed the best tropical hardwoods and treated woods. This means the sets are durable and suitable for play outdoors.

Roof | ALCOA Aluminum Can Sheet | C2C Bronze | (5%)Roof covering and structure is made from Alcoa aluminum sheet and can be recycled at the end of its life cycle.

Furniture & Figurines | Bamboo | Renewable | (4%)Bamboo is strong, durable and a rapidly renewable resource that can be harvested within one to five years. It also sequesters carbon dioxide in its growth and releases 35% more oxygen than equivalent hardwoods. Bamboo is affordable and easy to grow in a wide variety of climates, making it suitable for low income communities. Any waste can sold for mulch or other bamboo based materials.

Building Mortar | Starch and sand | Biodegradable | (18%)Mortar is natural and made up of fine sand and starch extract. It is water soluble to allow it to be washed off and is also biodegradable.

Packaging | Nispen Corrugated Packaging | C2C Bronze | (6%)The H4H sets come in a box made from corrugated packaging produced by Nispen Verpakkingen. The certified product range consists of corrugated packaging composed out of assessed materials (paper, ink and glues).

Cloth Pieces | Screens/Curtains | Material Leftovers | (1%) House 4 House up-cycles leftover natural fabrics pieces too small for clothing to make miniature curtains, screens and other extras for each set.
