.President Tom introduced Sergeant David Wheeler, who claimed it would be a big night, he was right, the fines totalled $ 29.70 possibly a record, Treasurer Byron had trouble fitting the money in his bag. Even the Sergeant can be right sometimes. Fines John Marshall – presented with a mini spirit level to help keep the BBQ level. Charles Minster and Jenny - 50th wedding anniversary. President Tom conceded that Charles had out performed him by a factor of 3.. James Ivanovski – Birthday, Anniversary and broken sunglasses. Pres. Tom Barrett – for failing to know the difference between a “Shine banner” and a Porta Cot. Adrian Davis, Car run out of gas, called the RACV and had it going two and a half hours later. Fine for all members who did not attend the Australia Day March. Roger the Swindler offered a prize of $250.00 . Funny thing but Roger sold himself one of the potential winning tickets. True to swindler form the prize jack potted.

Chairman Doug Rhodes introduced Laurie Fisher who joined Rotary in Swan Hill and is

now a member of Footscray West who spoke on Donations In Kind.

D I K were originally started in the district in a back yard shed, progressed to a storage supplied free of rent by Golden Bros. D I K now rents a storage shed in Footscray for $48,000.00 pa plus running costs of $15,000.00 pa. All work is carried out by volunteers, both Rotarians and members of the public. These base costs are mainly met by district member clubs that donate $3,500.00 pa. There are other GIK distribution stores in Vic. but the system needs to be centralised to reduce overheads. GIK needs a significant corporate sponsor to move forward and prosper in the future. Most goods received and consigned are clothes, school requisites, computers and hospital equipment. 95% of goods go overseas, most to East Timor, and 5% local mainly Walkers and Wheelchairs. Last year 67 x 20'containers were sent at a shipping cost of $232,000.00 taking 10,400 volunteer hours. President Tom closed the meeting at 7:55pm.

Remember: There are great speakers programmed for February invite Partners, Friends, those who may be interested in learning about what our club does.

TONIGHTS MEETING AND DIARY DATES

Donations in Kind (DIK) is a program supported by Rotary Clubs in Australia which grew out of the compassion and concern of returning overseas volunteers. This recycling and re-use program involves the collection, sorting, packing, dispatch and distribution of donated items to countries in need of these goods. Many goods and products, for which organisations in Australia have no further use, are valu-able commodities in needy countries. While 50 computers with non-flat screen monitors and less than 1 gigabyte of memory may be obsolete for some corporate offices, they might in-stead be of significant value in helping the education of under privileged students in East Timorese universities or in assisting with the accountancy of microfinance .

ROTARY CLUB OF MOUNT MARTHA

Collecting materials instead of asking for money: What DIK is all about... The objectives of Donations in Kind are:

To receive requests for aid goods from Rotary Clubs and aid organisations in developing countries. To receive goods from within Australia, from Rotary Clubs, schools, hospitals and other or-ganisations for distribution to developing countries. To match the goods received with the requests for aid goods wherever possible and to en-sure that all goods are dispatched to appropriate areas of need. To maintain records, facilitate customs declarations and transport arrangements. To assist, if requested, Clubs and Districts to dispatch aid goods direct to recipient Rotary Clubs or aid organisations. > To maintain the quality of the goods dispatched. To minimise the cost of transport.

To maintain a close liaison with the Rotary Clubs and aid organisations at the receiving end so as to have an appreciation of their requirements and to minimize any problems that they may encounter.

NATIONAL YOUTH SCIENCE FORUM: ENCOURAGING MORE STUDENTS INTO

SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICS.

While their peers spend the holidays preparing for their final year of school, 400 year 12 science students from across Australia and the world have recently travelled to Canberra to sample university life as part of the National Youth Science Forum. The students were split into 14 groups representing their interests in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and lived on campus at Australian National University for two 12-sessions in January.

Far from being stuck in a science lab all summer, the program gives the students a taste of the diverse study and career options available in STEM, with field trips and exposure outside their area of interest to foster the beginnings of a professional network and to give them experiences to guide their choice of scientific career. Some of the many ex-periences the students participate in include the opening ceremony at Parliament House, excursion to Deep-Space tracking station (“The Dish”), Mt. Stromlo Observatory, ANU Supercomputer, John Curtain School of Medical Research, and a live video conference with the director of the CERN Hadron Collider in Switzerland. Report from
