“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, (cf. Matt. 2:6) whose origins are from of old, from ancient times." Therefore Israel will be abandoned until the time when she who is in labor gives birth and the rest of his brothers return to join the Israelites. He will stand and shepherd his flock (cf. Luke 1:32-33; John 10) in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God. And they will live securely, for then his greatness will reach to the ends of the earth. And he will be our peace (5:2-5)

Judgment on EDOM.

Historical roots: Jacob & Esau (Genesis 25-36)

Edom & Israel (Numbers 20; Judges 11:17-18)

“Edom will be conquered…but Israel will grow strong.”

(Numb. 24:18)

Psalm 60:8-9/ 108:9-10“Remember, LORD, what the Edomites did on the day Jerusalem

fell. ‘Tear it down,’ they cried, ‘tear it down to its foundations!’” (Psalm 137:7)

Page 50: OT Session 9 Minor Prophets

Other prophecies vs. EDOM“They will swoop down on the slopes of Philistia to the west;

together they will plunder the people to the east. They will lay hands on Edom and Moab, and the Ammonites will be subject to them.” (Is. 11:14)

Isaiah 21 & 34Jeremiah 49 (cf. Obadiah vv1-4 & 5-6)Ezekiel 25 & 35Joel 3:19; Amos 1:11-12; 9:12; Malachi 1:4-5

Page 51: OT Session 9 Minor Prophets

Root of the problem:

Presence of pride (1:3)“The pride of your heart has deceived you,

you who live in the clefts of the rocks        and make your home on the heights,        you who say to yourself,        'Who can bring me down to the ground?‘”

Absence of mercy (1:11-14)“For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has

seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen.” (1 Jn.4:20)

Page 52: OT Session 9 Minor Prophets

The nature of judgment:

The mountains of Esau will be breachedThe house of Esau will be destroyed

“Oh how Esau will be ransacked,        his hidden treasures pillaged!

…In that day, declares the LORD, will I not destroy the wise in Edom, people of understanding in the mountains of Esau?” (1:6, 8)

Page 53: OT Session 9 Minor Prophets

Execution of God’s judgment

"The day of the LORD is near for all nations.        As you have done, it will be done to you;        your deeds will return upon your own head.” (1:15)

Vindication of God’s people

“The kingdom will be the LORD's.” (1:21)

The locusts have come!A call to repentance

The LORD is coming! (cf. 2:11)A call to repentance

The LORD has come!

1. “I will drive out the enemy”2. “I will pour out my Spirit”

(ie…images of grain, wine, milk, oil & water)3. “I will repay you for the years the locusts have eaten”4. “I will fight for you (prepare for war)”

Page 58: OT Session 9 Minor Prophets

Declare a holy fast;call a sacred assembly.

Summon the elders and all who live in the landto the house of the LORD your God, and cry out to the LORD. (1:14)

Blow the trumpet in Zion,        declare a holy fast,        call a sacred assembly.

(2:15-17)

Gather the people, consecrate the assembly; bring together the elders, gather the children, those nursing at the breast. Let the bridegroom leave his room and the bride her chamber.

Let the priests, who minister before the LORD, weep between the temple porch and the altar.

Let them say, “Spare your people, O LORD. Do not make your inheritance an object of scorn, a byword among the nations.”

Why should they say among the peoples, “Where is their God?”

Page 59: OT Session 9 Minor Prophets

“Even now,” declares the LORD, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning. Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity. Who knows? He may turn and have pity and leave behind a blessing.” (2:12-14)

Page 60: OT Session 9 Minor Prophets

This is what was spoken by the prophet Joel (2:28-32): “In the last days”, God says, “I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. I will show wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke. The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord. And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Acts 2:16-21)

Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.” He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The people of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now one greater than Jonah is here.” (Matthew 12:38-41)

“A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.” Jesus then left them and went away. (Matthew 16:4)
