Carlyle Qualifies for NCAAsEUGENE, OR Junior Laura

Carlylemade history last Saturday

afternoon at the NCAA West Regional

meet, by becoming the first female to

qualify for the NCAA Championships

since the OSU Cross Country and Track

& Field program was reinstated in

2004.Carlyle qualified in the 5000m by

running a very gutsy race, resulting in a

new school record time of 16:05.04,

which broke her previous record by 14 seconds, which she set in her only

other appearance at that distance this season back in March.

She finished fourth in a close race in the second of two heats, the top

five in each race and next two fastest times qualified for the NCAA Champi-

onships making for 12 overall qualifiers out of the West Region.

"This is a big day," Head Coach Kelly Sullivansaid. "I'm really happy for

her, and the majority of our team is here to support her. It was a big step. Itwas a little stressful this week waiting for it, and she just showed how savvy

she is and looked like she felt pretty good. So we're happy."

Going into the last lap and down the back stretch at Hayward Field a

small gap had developed between Carlyle and the five leading runners repre-

senting the five automatic qualifying spots, but with 120 meters to go Carlyle

rallied and with the roar of fans at Hayward Field she caught two runners

down the home stretch, not far behind the heats winner Kathy Kroeger of

Stanford who ran, 16:03.96.

"I knew that with my 1500m speed I maybe had a little more kick than

some of them, a gap had opened up and I got nervous, but I said to myself,

No, you want this Carlyle said. "I felt pretty confident. That's all you can do

during a race is be confident in your fitness. I was confident I could get that

fifth spot."

The NCAA Championships will be held June 8-11 in Des Moines, Iowa

at Drake University. There will only be a final in the 5000m, which will be run

Friday June 10 at 8:10 P.M.

Going into the 2010-2011 school year Senior Hayley Ovesonwas injured and hadnt run for nearly seven months. Despite what

may have appeared as a dire situation, Oveson began a journey that

really came to a culmination at the Pac 10 championships in Tucson,

AZ, where despite being ranked 16th going into the 5000m, she ran

an amazing race and took fifth place, running 16:41.

She had a look on her face standing on the line at the Pac 10

5000m that Ill never forget the rest of my coaching career, there was

no doubt she was going to run well, and did she ever, said AssistantCoach Travis Floeck.

Oveson also ran well at the West Regional, placing 12th in her

heat and running her second best time ever, 16:37. Read more about

Senior Jennifer Maciashad never run at the Pac 10 Track and

Field Championship meet prior to this year. After a personal record

16:47 in the 5000m at the Mt. Sac Relays on April 15th, Macias not

only got her chance to run at Pac 10s, but she also qualified for the

NCAA West Regional race in the 5000m, where she had the opportu-nity to wear her OSU uniform for the final time. Macias was also

recently named a Everyday Champion by the OSU Athletic Department,

see Jens interview here, where she talks about the pride she has in notonly being the first member of her family to graduate from high school,

but now college as well.

Senior Krista Stangelwas afraid her career at Oregon State

was over when she ran a disappointing race at the Mt. Sac Relays in

the 5000m, but the philosophy and message in her five years at OSU

from Coach Sullivan has been, its not over until its over. Stangel

took advantage of that attitude and ran with it. She started a progres-

sion of 1500m races first by running 4:39 at the Oregon Relays on

April 22, then running a personal record of 4:33 at the Oregon Twi-

light on May 6th, and to cap it all off Stangel ran her way into the

Pac-10 1500m Final to finish off her career.

TUCSON, AZ- Not to be forgotten, Carlye

had yet another breakthrough race at the Pac 10

Championships, where she took second place in

the 1500m, with a time of 4:20.98, outkicking

Oregon phenom Anne Kesslering, who is currently

ranked 1st in the NCAA in the 800m, in the final

100m and closing on two-time NCAA champion

Jordan Hasay in the process, who would win the

race in 4:19.18.

"Laura finishing second was huge," Oregon

State track Head Coach Kelly Sullivansaid follow-

ing the meet. "The race was filled with women

who have been All-Americans, and her finishing

second surprised a few people."

The eight points she scored, combined with

the four points Oveson scored in the 5000m,

gave OSU a score of 12 points, first time the program has scored double

Kelsi Schaer

Future Beav Kelsi Schaer won anOregon 6A State Title in the 1500m

for Tigard HS in a tactical 4:37, pass-

ing five runners in the last 100m.

Kelsi was able to come back shortly

after the 1500m and place sixth in

the 800m and ran a leg on a state

placing 4 x 400m relay team.

Kinsey Gomez

Kinsey Gomez capped off her highschool career with two Idaho 5A

State Championships in the 1600m

and 3200m for Coeur dAlene High,

winning each race by large margins

and capping off an undefeated sen-

ior season. That brings Kinseys

total to an impressive seven State

Championships over her highschool career. Way to represent

Kinsey!

-Also Maureen Tremblay of Gig Harbor, WAran an impressive 4:59 1600m at her

district meet, which was an 11 second

improvement from her junior year.

This June, Beavers Without Bordersin partnership with Habi-tat for Humanity will depart on a 15 day service trip to Skopje, Ma-cedonia. It is there, that this team of student-athletes will construct

a home for local family in need. Senior OSU Cross Country/Track

athletes Krista Stangeland Hannah Soza-Hodgkinsonwill be part

of the team.

Borders to Guatemala over spring break back in March. A full-

length documentary film of the trip will be premiering August 12th
