TheScholarDevelopmentsummercourseinMagdaleneCollege,Cambridge,isnearlyadecadeoldnowandinvolvestwoweeksofstudyonatopicpreparedbyOSUfaculty,withcompletionofthecourseprojectinmid-Octoberforfall,2012credit.(3hours).Typicallystudentswillspend4-5hoursperdayinclassduringtheweek,andleaveCambridgeontheweekendfortravelaroundtheU.K.andbeyond.Thisyear,forpurposesofthecoursecontent,thattimewillbeextendedforstudentstovisitsitesingroupsforobservationandanalysis,andthenreportingonreturntoCambridge.Thiscoursestructurehasbeenhighlysuccessfulbeforeonthisprogram,andthisyear’stopicseemsidealforasimilareducationalexperience—asplannedandtaughtbyprofessorsBillDecker(English)andTomWikle(Geography).InordertotakefulladvantageoftheshorttimeinCambridge,readingassignmentswillbemadebefore-hand,andmeetingstodiscussclassfocusandtravelsiteswillbeheldinthespringsemesterof2012forthoseselectedtoattend.
Oneofourgoalsistointroducestudentstomethodsofobservingforeignculturesinwaysthatallowthemtorelatethepasttothecontemporarymoment.Anotheristodemonstratehow,astravelerstothesesites,theynotonlyobserveandrecordtheirresponsestoartifacts,butinteractcloselywithresidents.Theirobservationsandinteractionswillformthebasisofthewritingforthiscourse.Inpreparationforthetrip,studentssampleawidespectrumoftravelnarrativedrawnfromvariousliterarygenres(essay,journal,letter,poem,shortstory,blog)depictingAmericantravelintheUKandontheEuropeancontinent.Whileimmersedintheexperienceoftheforeignsojourn,studentswillbegintocomposeanarrativeoftheirtravels.Indevelopingtheirownindividualtravelogues,studentsthemselveswillbefreetodeterminethegenreandmethodofthisdocumentforitsfinalproduction.
GrantsTheOfficeofScholarDevelopment,thankstogenerousalumnidonationsandoutstandingsupportoftheHenryBellmonEndowmentandtheLewWentzFoundation,willgiveeachstudentenrolledinthiscoursea$1,725granttooffsetthecoursecosts.Additionalgrantsabovetheautomatic$1,725levelwillalsobeavailablebasedonfinancialneed.See"ApplyingforGrants"onpage1.
Course CostsTheactualexpensesforthiscourseareexpectedtobe$3,225/student.Withaminimumgrantof$1,725,thecosttoyouwillbeapproximately$1,500(ifyouareapplyingfor,andareawarded,anadditionalgrantabovethebasic$1,725,thecostforyouwillbelower).Thiswillcovertuitionandfeesfor3undergraduatecredits,housingatMagdaleneCollegefor14nights(arriveCambridgeJuly7anddepartJuly21)anddailycontinentalbreakfasts.NotcoveredareairfaretoandfromtheUnitedKingdom,additionalmealsandmiscellaneousexpenses.OSU Tuition Waivers do not apply to Outreach travel courses since all fees collected are applied to course expenses.
BillingAlltuitionandapplicableprogramfees,alongwiththegrantsyoureceive,willappearonyourBursaraccountatthebeginningoftheFallsemesterinAugust,2012.
Note: May 1, 2012 is the deadline to drop this course with no financial penalty. After that date, you will be responsible for all the course costs, including tuition, even though it will not appear on your Bursar account until August.
