Welcome to the November issue of the Ossett & Horbury Review.Christmas seems to have sneaked up very quickly this year, or perhapstime is whizzing by because I’m getting old! To get you in the Christmas mood, we’ve included the pick of theChristmas books, courtesy of Rickaro Books in Horbury because booksare still one of the all time great gifts - top of my list every time. For the non-book lovers, we’ve also included a reminder of the widevariety of shops in Ossett & Horbury that are ideal for your Christmasshopping. When you think about the shops on your doorstep, yourealise just how much shopping you can do locally, without having tobrave the malls. Some of our advertisers this month are promoting some greatChristmas offers and events, such as The Fleece, Rickaro Books, LucyArt, Envy Windows and The Beauty Spa - check out the adverts for moredetails. Our Diary page also has details of local events for the nextcouple of months. To mark the remembrance of our brave soldiers killed in war, we’ve alsoincluded details of the work of local man, Eric Howard, in restoring theWar Memorial at the bottom of Manor Road, Ossett. He has done aremarkable job and his work is a great tribute to the men who lost theirlives in war.A big thank you as ever to our advertisers for making the Ossett &Horbury Review possible. Please remember to mention the magazinewhen responding to adverts.
See you in December,

Ossett and Horbury, with their own unique identity,
offer a wonderful variety of shops - great if you’re
looking for that special gift and no battling with the
crowds and queuing in traffic that is often the case
with the bigger cities and shopping malls. With an
abundance of cafes and restaurants both towns have
a genuine friendly atmosphere.
The shopping experience can actually be quite
pleasurable, even to the die hard shopping-phobics -
with shopkeepers who actually know your name,
remember you from last time you went in and make
time to chat. Many local shops will offer that extra
customer service to ensure you find what you are
looking for.
With this year’s financial uncertainty, many familiies
are cutting back or at the very least trying to spread
the cost by starting their shopping early. With pennies
counting more than ever this year, why make repeated
trips into crowded city and shopping centres when a
fair amount of your shopping can be done locally.
Make time to browse the local shops, speak to the
shopkeepers and explain what you’re looking for. I
think you’ll be surprised at how much Ossett and
Horbury has to offer.
In Ossett, great gifts can be found at C & J
Armitage’s in the Wellgate, a treasure trove of gifts
and the best selection of jigsaws and traditional games
that I’ve seen in a long time, sitting happily alongside
their artist supplies, prints and frames.
If jewellery is your thing, make JJ Deans and Martin
Brummitts a port of call - both great for giving
inspiration as well as a great service.
Other shops which you really must call into include
Chocoholics, for the specialists chocolates, Special
Thoughts and House of Empress for your cards and
gift wrap and Angel Gifts for a whole range of gift
ideas. Red Balloon in the Wellgate is fabulous if there
is a baby in the family - the quality of babywear in this
shop really must be felt to be appreciated. And for the
more grown up - Dirt Corp Clothing in the Wellgate
has brought really trendy brand names into the town
centre.
In Horbury, The Gift Shop on the Hight Street, is
well worth a visit as is the Roundhouse, which smells
divine as you walk in. Both have some really different
gifts for you to choose from. Rickaro Books has long
been a favourite of ours, both because we love books
and because the owner, Richard Knowles is so helpful
and obliging. If there’s a book you’re looking for, he’ll
find it for you - if ever there was a shop that could
provide a gift for just about anyone, it’s Rickaro Books.
And the bonus of Christmas is that Richard always
has stock of signed copies of popular books - making
a lovely gift that bit more special. But be warned, the
signed copies always sell really well - don’t leave it too
late!
Portmans Jewellers and Mackay and Pearson are
both fabulous shops to visit and I doubt you’ll leave
either shop without having found a gift or two.
Portman Jewellers have so much more than just
jewellery, it’s a real aladdins cave and Mackay and
Pearsons can custom make a piece of jewellery or a
set to your specification - how special is that? A
unique, custom made piece of jewellery to show just
how much you care.
If it’s floral gifts you’re looking for, there are some
excellent florists in Ossett and Horbury. Amaryllis in
Ossett and Blackburns in Horbury are both Interflora,
which means you can order a gift for someone living
elsewhere in this country, or even abroad, and be
confident that the quality will be spot on. Being
Interflora florists means that both shops also have to
work to extremely high standards with their local
deliveries.
And for the bakers, if you need sugarcraft supplies
to get on with your Christmas cake, Cakes and
Favours in Ossett will certainly have just what you’re
looking for. I don’t know how they do it, but everytime
I go in there, they have even more to choose from.
Sue, is always happy to help with advice and may
even let you in on some trade secrets.
For Foodies amongst you, The Black Olive in
Horbury is an amazing delicatessen at which you can
buy delicious olives, unusual pickles and vinegars and
a whole raft of foods that make your mouth water by
just looking at the packaging. Hampers can be made
up for gifts and can be tailored to your specifications -
call in and ask for details.
Hopefully, we’ve managed to give you a bit of a
taste of what Ossett and Horbury can offer. The shops
mentioned are really only half the story, but you’ll have
to visit yourself to find out the rest. Happy Shopping!

In the graveyard near to the bottom of Manor Road in
Ossett is a War Memorial to local men who lost their
lives during World War I. It is a simple wooden cross
set in a cairn with a plaque containing the names of
the fallen soldiers.
The wooden cross had fallen into a poor state of
disrepair over the years and the plaque was in need
to cleaning to enable visitors to clearly read the
names on it. A local man, Eric Howard, stepped
forward to volunteer his time and expertise to replace
the wooden cross and re-point the cairn. He also
cleaned the plaque.
A service of dedication was attended by members
of the Royal British Legion (Horbury, Sitlington &
Ossett Branch), church members and interested
members of the public. After gathering in the car park
of the Fleece Inn on Spa Street, members of the
Royal British Legion marched to the Graveyard
where the Service of
Dedication was held to
acknowledge the work
and dedication that has
enabled visitors to reflect
on the personal
sacrifices made by the
soldiers in the hope of
making the world a
better place.
