JUNE 2014 MINUTES

The meeting opened with a tribute poem to the American Flag by Joe

Broom followed by the Pledge of Allegiance by DO Neary.

Col Dunston was the guest speaker. The F-16s will be at DIA until July 15

due to the repair of Buckley’s runway. DIA have been great hosts for our

Wing, but the airplanes sit outside and received some damage from recent

hail storms. The new AEF(Air Expenditionary Force) deployment will find the

entire 140 FW deploying as a complete unit to the Pacific theater. The first

deployment in the Jan will be to Kunson, Korea for 3 months. F-16s are

scheduled for mods with larger HUD screens after this deployment. Our jets

are vintage 1986-1987 aircraft and probably won’t be replaced until 2027.

Our state partnership is currently with the country of Jordan with participa-

tion in the Falcon meet in that country. Future partnership with Slovenia with

support of their Army Security forces. Another deployment includes helping

an African country build a range. Domestic agreements now exist with other

state governments for disaster assistance. The last ORI/ORE inspection was

in 2012 and now the new inspection system is looking at a more realistic lo-

cally driven inspection system. The Air Force will now evaluate how units in-

spect their own operational functions. This is a new paradigm for the Air

get rid of needless procedures such as the form 100 for inspecting vehicles since no one re-

ally checks all of the items on the form. And he said to get rid of things that are not really

used for operational functions. The budget is currently a tough situation with not much mon-

ey. Their will be 2 furloughs and 20 percent cut in flying hours. This is because Iraq and

Afghanistan wars are winding down and the need for fighter aircraft is diminishing . Hope-

fully the 140 FW will receive F-35s but that is somewhere around 2027. Sick call is Spike

Boyle. Taps is Jim Hall.

First timer was Bill Miller.

The Buckley Retiree Appreciation Day is June 14th at the Community Center, Bldg 1032 with

35 Booths. Dewey Hicks, Joe Broom, and Judy Pock will staff our OSOTMG booth.

BGen Jim Hall’s Howdy Duty will be in the next issue of the newsletter.

Birthdays present were Stan Minarsky, Judy Pock and Paul Turner.

We closed and the next meeting will be July 1st at TREA 39.

JULY 2014 MINUTES

DO Neary opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag

and Sonja Broom said the prayer.

Joyce said that the EANGUS conference in 9 August in Phoenix and the

NGAUS conference is after that. The current lobbying is the possible take

away of 4 UTAs for one two day weekend. So, we need to support these

organizations with our membership and dues.

Sick call is Spike Boyle and Maxine Merten. Maxine is in Harvard Square

and has some memory problems.

Taps– Sheryln Costigan(John Costigan’s wife) and Jean Bradley(Chuck

Bradley’s wife)

Birthdays present were Mike Rowan, Mike Schnurstein, and Ken Forrest.

The big function coming up is the CAMANA Club Reunion on August 1-2,

dinner for $12.Saturday will be 1600 with the Pig Roast dinner for $7 in

“HOWDY DUTY” STORY ONE OF A KIND

A biography of General James “Jim” Hall by:

Jack G. Powell – Mile High Chapter Air Force Association

Dewey Hicks – Other Side of the Mountain Gang

Retired Brigadier General James C. Hall brings us a lifetime of adventures and experiences

that have made him “One of a kind”. Born on 14 April 1926 in Wilkinsburg Pennsylvania, at the

age of 17, he joined the United States Army serving as a gunner on a B-17. His military career

spanned the U.S. Army Air Corps and the U.S. Air force. (The U.S. Army Air Corps became

the U.S. Air Force on September 8, 1947)

General Hall’s military duties included flight engineer or radio operator on the B-17, B-24, B-

25, B-29, C-46, C-47, and C-54 including crew member on numerous Air Force air craft. He

has been an Air Force Association Chapter President and Colorado State President. He was the

Director of Information and Protocol for the 140th Wing Buckley Base from 1970 – 1981. He

was also a member of the Other Side of the Mountain Gang.

He is known for his work with the zero-zero F-106 ejection seat test. He was the first per-

son to ride a rocket at ground level and eject himself before it slammed into the barrier.

General Hall received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of New Mexico and is a grad-

uate of the Army Parachute School at Fort Benning, GA, the Advanced School at Fort Bragg,

NC, and U.S. Forest Service Smoke Jumper’s School.

Throughout 36 years of military service and the rest of his civilian life, he became a pioneer

in parachuting. General Hall is a Master Parachutist with more than 1800 jumps. He started the

parachuting program at the United States Air Force Academy which is the safest program of all

similar service schools. In 1959 General Hall and a partner organized the first professional par-

achuting firm in the world which led to many innovative advances in its field.

His hit show “Ripcord” has been noted as starting the modern conception of parachuting as a

sport. General Hall pioneered the “Buddy System” for free fall training and the innovative “4-

line-cut” for emergencies in parachuting enabling a jumper to have control over the direction and

speed of his chute. General Hall has been honored and cited numerous times. He has received

such accolades as the AFA Medal of Merit, the Citation of Honor for his MIA/POW program,

the AFA Exceptional Service Plaque, the AFA Presidential Citation, the AFA Colorado Man of

the Year, Leo Stevens parachute medal, and the AFA Colorado Meritorious Service Medal. As a

founding member of Colorado’s Wright Brothers Memorial Foundation, he was inducted into the

Colorado Aviation Hall of Fame in 1985.

General Hall’s final jump was on June 1, 2014, into the Hands Of God.
