How we need to raise our awareness of God’sliving activity in our lives!

The power of the cross is clear to us, and thepromise of eternal life is a confidence for us. We knowthese are ours by faith.

Yet, by observation, we often overlook God’sliving directing hand in what goes on in our daily life.

It was a normal Thursday evening service at OurSaviour. It was August a few years ago. While drivingto church late in the afternoon, the sky was astir withdarkening activity. On the way past the ball diamondat Danz School, some of the dry dust on the infieldcongregated with enthusiasm, defied gravity and liftedin unison like a small dustbowl. Earlier, I heard anews-snippet about a gathering weather concern forWisconsin (It would be this storm that would create atornado that day and take a life near Madison).

That night in the service, therewas the rare mid-week Baptism.During that Baptism we spoke ofGod’s creative ways, His miraclesthrough the often overlooked thingsof life, like water and The Word.We spoke of “God’s activity in ourlives” throughout the first part ofthe service and into the sermon. Wespoke of how, unlike famouspeople of the past, Jesus is not a

“Was”, but an “Is”. The text was Peter answeringJesus’ question about, “Who do you say that I am?”Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of theliving God.”

As the sermon rolled on and neared its completion,a homiletic-line was delivered that said something likethis: “He is alive, wants our attention, and seeks toshow His activity and presence in our lives.”

At that very second, our Lord delivered a crashingblow of resounding thunder over all of our heads. Yourpastor and the congregation were awestruck at thetiming, how our living Lord helped highlight the pointof the sermon! That was the very first sound of thunderthat evening, and as you know, more followed... Thecongregation broke into smiles and audible giggles. Thepoint was made and a joyful “Amen” soon followed, closing the message.

God is active in our lives. Often what we think iscoincidence is rather, providence. Not only has He

poured out material, health andpeople blessings on us, but He is atwork in the prayer needs we presentthem before Him.

Let’s open our eyes and watchto see Him at work! That is what itmeans that He is our, “Lord”. He isour daily Shepherd, alive and atwork in our stories. Let’s grow inthe knowledge of that, eh?

We can even see His presence inthe activities on the church calendar, inthe worship, fellowship andeducational events planned. Howabout putting that calendar on thefridge and join in the many specialactivities of the family of God at OurSaviour!

Let’s not depend on a bolt oflighting or a crash of thunder toawaken us to His living presence, butjust believe! See you in worship aswe gear up for an outstanding year ofwonderful activities at OSLC!Earplugs optional.

“But grow in the grace andknowledge of our Lord and SaviorJesus Christ. To Him be the gloryboth now and forever. Amen.” - 2Peter 3:18

In September we observe LaborDay, a legal holiday in honor of

labor. The Bible deals with labor in avariety of ways. In Genesis 2:15 weread that “The Lord God took theman and put him into the Garden ofEden to work it and take care of it.”(NIV) It was part of God’s plan ofcreation to make human beings forwork and provide work for them.

Work is important for us. It isimportant enough that we oftenanswer questions like who or whatwe are by referring to our work. Wemay answer in a number of differentways like I’m a teacher, or aplumber, or a carpenter, or an officemanager, or a business owner, or apastor, or a doctor, or one of manyother vocations. No wonder peopleget depressed when they are withoutjobs and meaningful work to do.Much of our self esteem is tied inclosely with our work.

As God’s redeemed stewards werecognize that God has entrusted tous many things to manage and workwith according to His will and plan.To not be willing to work and stillexpect to receive good things is likestealing. Ephesians 4:28 says, “Hewho has been stealing must steal nolonger, but must work, doingsomething useful with his ownhands, that he may have somethingto share with those in need.” (NIV)

Honest labor provides us with asense of fulfillment and provides for

our own needs and something extrato share with others who are in need. The book of Ecclesiastes includes anumber of passages like 2:24; 3:12-13; 22; 5:18-20 that encourage us tofind joy in our work. Work is ablessing from God and He gives usthe time, talent and resources to doour work in a way that honors Godand blesses others as well asourselves. The words of Hebrews13:20-21 affirm this truth: “May theGod of peace, who through the bloodof the eternal covenant brought backfrom the dead our Lord Jesus, thatgreat Shepherd of the sheep, equipyou with everything good for doinghis will, and may he work in us whatis pleasing to him, through JesusChrist, to whom be glory for everand ever. Amen.” (NIV)

So this September as manythings like vacations are over andnew things start up again—school, mission and ministry efforts in ourcongregation as well as otherSeptember activities—let’sremember that with the power of theHoly Spirit we can live and work asGod’s redeemed stewards who freelyand joyfully manage all of life andlife’s resources for His purposes.May we always be encouraged togive our very best when it comes toour financial gifts of love, our use oftime and talents, and our willing serviceat home, in the workplace, in ourcommunities and in our congregation.

Jesus isWatchingOne night a burglar broke into a house and shone

his flashlight around looking for valuables. When hepicked up a laptop computer to put in his sack, astrange, disembodied voice came from the dark. “Jesusis watching.”

Nearly jumping out of his skin, he froze. Thenhearing nothing more, he turned the flashlight on againand pulled out a stereo to disconnect the wires. As clearas a bell he heard, “Jesus is watching.” Frantically, helooked for the source of the voice. In a far corner, hislight came to rest on a big green parrot.

“Did you say that?” he hissed.“Yes,” answered the parrot, “I was trying to warn you.”The burglar relaxed, it was only a parrot, “Warn me?

Who the devil are you?”“Moses.” replied the bird.Laughing, the man turned to pick up the laptop.

“What kind of stupid people would name a parrotMoses?” he asked.

Quietly, Moses answered. “The same people whonamed their Rottweiler Jesus.”

Sink or SwimA man and his Golden Retriever were walking by

the ocean when he spied another man walking towardhim. The owner of the Golden Retriever was so proudof his dog’s newly mastered feat he stopped the manand said, “Watch this!”

He tossed a piece of driftwood far out to sea.Running on top of the water, the Golden fetched thewood and came back. The dog owner grinned. Thevisitor frowned. Three times the procedure wasrepeated, three times the dog walked on water andreturned the wood to his master.

Excitedly the dog owner said, “Did you noticeanything unusual about my dog?”

“Yeah,” the man said, “Your dog can’t swim.”

StandYourGroundIn the 1960’s, right after Dr. Frances Kelsey joined

the FDA, a pharmaceutical firm in Ohio applied for alicense to market a new drug, Kevadon. In liquid formit seemed to relieve nausea in early pregnancy and wasgiven to millions of expectant women in Europe, Asiaand Africa. Although studies revealed harmful sideeffects, the pharmaceutical firm printed informationdeclaring its safety. The company exerted greatpressure for Dr. Kelsey to pass approval for the drug.

After many reviews, Dr. Kelsey found the resultsof the study “unsatisfactory” and stood rigidly behindher decision not to approve. Finally, after 14 monthsof struggle, the company withdrew. The medication?Thalidomide. We know now the horror of thalidomidedeformities. One firm and definite “NO” decision byDr. Kelsey spared untold agony in the United States.

Sometimes standing your ground may not seemthat important today, but in time you may see the“big” picture! Had not Dr. Kelsey “stood her ground”thousands of lives in America would have ruined.

Stand your ground!

Parenting Teens - “Purpose” is a buzzword in manychurches these days, as Christians explore what it means tolive intentionally. God has a purpose, or plan, for each ofour lives. Teenagers also must discover their particularpurpose and find ways to live it out.

Coming up with a mission statement is a helpful firststep. You can even do this together as a family. ForChristians, a mission statement will revolve around faithand service, but it also can include your passions anddreams. Brainstorm a sentence or two dealing with each ofthese areas: mind, body, heart, and spirit.

Another way to explore your purpose is asking, “Whatdo you stand for?” Our culture encourages today’steenagers to stand for riches and fame, but Jesus calls hisfollowers to deny and humble themselves. He calls us to“produce lasting fruit” (John 15:16). Our lives shouldreflect the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).

After teenagers discover their purpose, they can setgoals for achieving it. If goals are to be meaningful, kidsmust set them themselves. Counselor Steve Merritt, writingin Group Magazine, defines goals as “good things we canbring about ourselves, as long as we do it without control ormanipulation.” All parents desire good things for ourteenagers, but we can’t always be involved in making themhappen. Kids must be passionate about their own goals andself-motivated about reaching them. And for goals to beGod-pleasing, we must reach them in ways that honor him.

Below are a few snapshots of what today’s teenagersand young people strive for.

When 4,600 kids ages 12 to 19 were asked abouttheir life goals, the top responses were:

• 86% enjoy life• 82% have good relationships with friends and family• 78% get married• 73% make lots of money• 72% have children• 65% travel (Mediamark Research)When almost 600 young people ages 18 to 25 were

surveyed about their generation’s top goals, the topresponses were:

• 81% to get rich• 51% to be famous• 30% to help people who need help• 22% to be leaders in their community• 10% to become more spiritual. (Pew Research Center)Watch the weekly announcements concerning Youth

Did you know that new socksand new underwear are amongthe most requested and leastdonated items at thrift stores andhomeless shelters? Think aboutit. It makes perfect sense. Intoday’s throwaway society, fewpeople ever donate used socksand literally no one (thankfully)ever donates used underwear tothe very types of stores oragencies where those in needobtain their clothes.

When faced with a limitedbudget that must go for food, shelter or medicine, socks andunderwear are last on the list forthose in need. But there’s anembarrassment associated withnot having these items, not to

mention it can be uncomfortable, cold in the fall and winter, andthere are basic hygiene issues too.

Once again this fall, “A Pair& A Spare: Brown County’sUndercover Challenge” willtake place to collect new socksand new underwear for those inneed. This year’s collection isscheduled for September 8through September 30, 2009.

This year, Our SaviourLutheran Church will beparticipating in the effort byhaving a collection box andfocusing on the need forchildren’s socks. Although wehave decided to focus on this

specific item, we will collect allitems requested during thiscollection period. So when you’rebuying a pair of new socks orunderwear for yourself, yourchildren or your grandchildren, buy a spare and donate it inSeptember. All styles and sizesare needed for men, women, seniors, teens, children, infantsand toddlers.

Please deposit donated itemsin the barrels in the officehallway. The collection iscoordinated by the Brown CountyHomeless and Housing Coalition, with donated items distributedfree of charge by agencies whowork directly with those in need.

It’s time for the Undercover Challenge!
