Construction workers often have towork in confined spaces in order tocomplete the job.An update was required becauseprevious OSHA rules regardingwork in confined spaces did notapply to construction sites.

Injury and illness recording and reportingguidelines will be updated/improved in 2014.Changes will utilize modern technologiesand allow digital reporting.More stringent reporting requirements -employers must report work related hospitalizations, fatalities and amputations within 24 hours.

Current safety standards addressing electric power transmission and distribution are nearly 40 years old.If a new set of rules passes, it will specificallyaddress foot protection requirements for those working with electrical power transmission, andalso include an update to aerial lift fall protection.

* No finalized rule date, although a decision is expectedsometime in the first half of 2014.

If proposed standards are implemented they will incorporate personal fall protection systemsinto 29 CFR 1910.23, which covers bothwalking and working surfaces.New technologies are now available to help protect employees who work with laddersor other equipment at heights.

* Final rule is expected to go through in June of 2014.

Crystalline Silica is dangerous substance often found in construction sites as it is found in every type of rock formation, it is used ceramics, glass and many other materials.

OSHA is proposing a reduction in the permissible exposure limit to 8-hour time-weighted averageof 50 micrograms per cubic meter of air.

* Public hearings are still being held, a decision is expected later in the year.

The proposal will require employers to develop a formalized injury and illness prevention program (I2P2).

* Public hearings will begin after September 2014, but it is doubtful that OSHA will be able to get everything completed and approved within 2014.

Need a new or updated rule regarding the safety guidelines associated with combustible dust.Combustible dust has been a confirmed cause of many major explosions which have resulted in fatalities in the past.OHSA estimates it will cost over $100 million to implement a new rule.

Proposal would extend the enforcement date out for crane operator certification by three years.

* OSHA is pushing forward with crane operatorsafety in 2014, however, the full completion isa longer term goal.

The new standard would update and replace the 1999 guidelines, and greatly reduce the permissible exposure limits to Beryllium.

* OSHA is set to issue a proposed rule which will regulate the occupational exposure to beryllium in April of 2014.
