OSHA Blood Borne Standard
• Title 29 of the Code of Federal Regulations, CFR 1910.1030
• Requires the employers to follow procedures to protect employees who can reasonably expect to be exposed to potentially infectious materials.
Training Requirement
• Annual Training and documentation of employees’ receipt of the information
Blood Borne Pathogens
•They are disease causing organisms found in the blood and certain body fluids of an infected person
HIV
• Human Immunodeficiency Virus
1.Attacks the immune system
2.Causes AIDS
3.Individual can be infected
for years and not be aware
of the infection
Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C
• Both viruses attack the liver
Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C
• Can result in:
▫ jaundice
▫ fatigue
▫ decreased appetite
▫ liver failure
▫ liver cancer
▫ IMMUNIZATION AVAILABLE FOR Hepatitis B ONLY
How are these pathogens spread?
• Contact with infected blood or body fluids containing visible blood
• Sharing skin piercing needles
• Indirect contact with blood or body fluids as these materials come in contact with cuts, abrasions, razor nicks, dermatitis, acne
• Splashed blood or body fluids into eyes, nose, mouth
• Unprotected sexual contact
Good News…..
• Blood Borne Pathogens are NOT spread through the air
▫ Transmission of BBPs can be avoided by following Standard Precautions and knowing the Exposure
Control Plan
What is the Exposure Control Plan?
• A detailed document outlining all aspects of BBP training, environmental steps to avoid exposure, directive regarding how potential exposure situation are managed
• Copy on file in a Red notebook in each clinic
Practicing Standard Precautions
• Treat all blood and body fluids as if it were infected
• Never assume a person is not infected because he/she does not appear ill
• Always protect yourself, use gloves whenever you are touching any potentially infected materials

Precautions….• Cover abrasions with a dressing
• Access person designated to do First
Aid and/or clean up
Don’t panic if you think you may have been exposed to BBPs-Medical Care and Follow up will be provided for you
Clean Up Concerns
• Gloves- Do not re-use disposal gloves
• Remove by peeling the wrist back towards the fingers with the gloved hand, hold the removed glove in the palm of the opposite hand and using your forefinger peel remaining glove back from the wrist over the previously removed glove.
• Dispose of immediately in trash can
Hand Washing
• For at least 20 seconds
▫ Wash with soap and running water
▫ Use waterless hand cleaning products when soap is not available
Additional Information
• Bio Hazard Boxes are available in the school clinics for materials that are soiled with potentially infected fluids
• Sharps Containers are also available in the clinic
• Hepatitis B Vaccine can be available to employees who have an increased risk of exposure
